thanks for the video!! when i was a teen, my dream was to be a photographer but i wasn't allowed so i studied IT, forgot my dream and focused on the money (it never came), after five years and a failed career, i'm slowly recovering my passion and seriously thinking about dive in photography and follow what makes me happy
Really motivating! Currently a full time software engineer for 6 years, currently putting all my free time into photography to eventually make the switch
Did you give up your software engineering job already for photography? How are you doing now? I am asking because I am trying to choose which one to pursue.
@@denniszenanywhere Hey man! Definitely persue a stable job and put extra effort into photography on the side. This is not an easy job to gain a liveable wage on, I am currently spending this year on building a professional portfolio and connecting/networking as much as possible (which is a success). I am expecting to be booked for quite a few repeat events which I did for free/i am doing for free this year, in order to get my name out there and network. However that is still going to be way too “risky” to quit a full time job over. So I would suggest you don’t quit until you’ve reached a point where you can live stress free of your photography income stream alone. Love that you reached out :)!
From engineer to dishwasher to photographer - what a journey. This dude means business😊. Kidding aside, considering the competition out there and looming AI fallout, I have to admire anyone who can manage to earn a good living as a pro photographer. BTW, in your prior vid you mentioned that you were awaiting delivery of the XT-5. This vid has a few pics w/notation that images were shot on XT-5. So, did you take delivery (or was the cam you used a loaner)? Cheers!
Gerard, Many get into photography in the first place because they love something about it. It can be the creative process, final results, or reliving cool moments. The fun sometimes stops; however; when it becomes a job and you're a professional and not just an enthusiast. The difference being professionals do it even when they don't want to or when it's not fun, (they have to get paid). Do you sometimes run into the wall where it isn't "fun" or enjoyable anymore? What do you do when you've shot the same sene over and over again? How do you get yourself through? Ever wonder could I be doing something else?
Um, paid jobs are paid jobs and it’s like any job, you don’t really want to do it ahahahah some are better than others. While my passion is creative portraits and lifestyle images, and with RUclips has provided me with this insane amount of creative freedom. So if I get inspired about a different genre of photography I just go for it. Plus if I get sick of weddings and brand work I can also do a different type of photo/video work
thank you for this video. I retired in May after 35 years in IT. I'm starting my photography journey. this video was very helpful. good, honest, balanced information.
Love the content! I've been doing photography & videography works for more than 6 years now, all started from just hobbies. But, it started to get boring over time so im thinking of joining the military or government works. Obviously i wont just give up all my taIents and hobbies just like that, i just feel like "hobbies are hobbies and not jobs" that way hopefully i can not get bored and appreciate more when im doing photography as my "true hobby". It's really funny that we both have a total opposite way of careering hahahaha cheers mate!!
Hi I have the Sony a6700 with a tamron 17-70 f2.8 lens. Would you say this is enough to start and use to build a portfolio and get atleast one paid work ? Or do I need to upgrade to a FF?
Yeah 100%, you don’t need full frame, it’s more of a long term goal as most ff cameras have dual recording, faster frame rates higher shutter life ect. But when you starting this doesn’t matter, just shoot, learn and back up everything
Awesome video! I've always liked taking pictures. And I just bought a canon rebel t7 for the heck of it cause I know I would enjoy taking pictures. There are no plans of actually doing it for a money, just a little hobby once in a while. But you never know. I just like learing new things at my own pace.
I like how all of the content creators never discuss setting white balance and there methods of getting exposure right in camera. Once I figure this out I’m going to give everyone the sauce.
@@dmystify1381that's right, but when you're delivering work to a client you want WB harmony throughout all the shots, otherwise the colour pallet might vary across the shots, eg the shade of grass, the sky etc.... because the light is constantly changing
Hi, this was a very interesting video to see. I just recently bought a Canon R50 and have always been interested in photography. Would love to hear your story.😁
@gerardneedham I am as a beginner photographer very much to need watch a experienced photographers like you. Please only don't stop your videos and experience basically great
Hey bro I just want to say that it’s so beautiful seeing people like you spreading the love of Jesus in such a world that so cursed but yet it’s the Lords footstool keep doing what your doing
Ahhhhh so nice! I've been here the whole time (engineer > dishy > photographer > RUclips). just a quick note for when this guy becomes a millionaire and starts thinking of switching gfs too jk
So many videos with similar titles are shite. This one was actually brilliant, honest and really useful. Congratulations on your hard-earned success.

Ahahaha I just shoot auto bro, auto white balance and aperture priority
I just started learning more about that. What are you trying to figure out?
it doesn't matter when shooting RAW🤷♀

You can do it!
Thanks for your video! This boosted my spirit and was very helpful.

Thanks a lot for your insights. One of the most authentic videos on the topic I watched. Thanks again for sharing and it is super useful for me!

Whats the use of changing aperture while recording video. I believe declicked aperture is barely needed feature
What is an example photo delivery service?
I use pic time
@gerardneedham thank you, I'll check them out. How do you like it?
Hi, I live in Melbourne and I wanted to know if you provide any photography classes or any internship that I can do?
Hey man, send me a email on gerard@gerardneedham.com
I’ll be in Melbourne in March if you want to grab a coffee, my shout out
Hi, how do you add the photos with the drop shadow on the white background? I’ve been trying to figure that out in Final Cut and can’t get it right
Hey man just go to your effects browser and search drop shadow and drag and drop it onto your image, make sure you have video and audio selected
One of the best video I have seen today...
Oh Thankyou so much that means alot
Great advice!!
Nice one buddy
Thanks 👍
Interesting
Очень даже хорошо

Hi bro can we learn advance photography in 6 months ❤
Yes, definitely! I’m actually making a course around this at the moment, so sign up to my newsletter for a discount when it’s released
…very good video….
Thank you very much!
So studying as an engineer will only make you end up as a dishwasher.
No a photographer
Hi Gerard, Lem here Wedding photographer from Queenstown NZ. I just started wedding photography, hope I get the opportunity to working with you.
Awesome bro, you should plan a styled shoot! In doing one in November there
