    Yes you did, just like many people do. I am NOT against USB scopes, I used to design them myself. But they are NOT a tool to replace a bench scope, they have more niche uses.

    Just having a little squint at these Picoscope machines, and they have drivers available for Linux for some models such as the 5000 series. It ranges from GBP800 to GBP1700. Thanks for the great teardown Dave - it was lots of fun on the fly like that.

    Exactly. Unless you are close miked (a lav or over-ear) you will always have this level of background noise.
    This is excellent audio quality for this sort of venue and situation. You have a professional microphone in the right pick-up pattern (shotgun) for camera-mounted work, giving you a full spectrum and quite lovely sound for a remote record.
    I hate crowd sounds, but only when they are very poorly recorded. This recording makes it sound like the viewer is there. Kudos.

    They are not the same market as a regular bench scope. You don't buy a USB scope to simply replace a bench scope. You chose it for extra channels, higher resolution, infinite memory etc

    You should be able to get 16 bits across all four channels, just with a lower bandwidth. Averaging four times gives you one additional bit of precision. Looks like the chip can do 12 bits at 160 Msps and 80 MHz bandwidth on all four channels. 13 bits would require averaging 4 times to 40 Msps and 20 MHz. 14 bits would be 10 Msps and 5 MHz, etc. The chip can do time interleaving to get higher sample rates with fewer channels; you can get 1 Gsps / 500 MHz at 8 bits resolution on 1 channel.

    Thanks EEVBlogger for this nice video. What did you say the op amps were? I can barely read it.
    And about the 16-bit resolution, we need to reduce the use to only one channel or just reducing the sampling frequency is fine?

    As a complete noob, my guess on the cutouts on the cans, aside from decoration, would be for heat dissipation. Purely a guess, you may have already considered it, and/or I could be way off. Just doesn't seem like something they'd do without some functional reason.

    Of course that microscope is not ideal for recorded video work. I'd either have to point my camera at an LCD display, or use a PC and capture box and external mic to get live video recording directly from it.

  • @ChipGuy
    @ChipGuy 11 лет назад

    Haha, really like that sort of "pirate" teardown. Picoscope may have also chosen this small company in order to get a good deal and a supply contract so if Hittite would have scrapped this product they needed to pay a big fee to Picoscope. Who knows. Anyway its always nice to see teardowns for exactly these chips you didn't have a clue about before. Well done.

    Pico and others do 60 & 100MHz, 1 Gigasample scopes for far less but this is a high resolution scope (12, 14 & 16 bits). High res scopes cost a lot more.
    Aside from being high resolution it has way more memory than other scopes at this price (32,000,000 samples). It also has things like segmented memory, serial decoding and mask limit testing etc which are cost options on most scopes. It also has a built in signal generator / AWG.
    Perhaps it is an insanely good price?

    The whole point of scope-boxes was portability and saving on the cost of a screen, and computing power, which was left to the host computer. But these are cheap nowadays compared to the digitizing front end. You'd have to be stupid nowadays to buy something like this over a portable Rigol scope with a nice screen and onboard computing power.

    Would Picoscope have had an agreement for a long life on the ASD chip that any purchasers of that company would have to honor until the agreement with Picoscope expired? Or would such an agreement be null and void with the sale/ takeover of ASD?

    I'm no pro, but my guess was that it scans a over many focal lengths, combine an image constructed the most focused part from each frame, and then output that to HDMI do get an icreased focal depth and the ability to view the object in 3d..
