- Between screenings of Jacques Doillon's 'La Pirate' and Lars von Trier's 'Antichrist,' actresses and mother-daughter duo Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg joined the Film Society's Director of Programming Dennis Lim to discuss the two films, as well as their respective daring film careers. An Evening with Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg kicked off our dual retrospective of the two actresses, Jane and Charlotte Forever, which runs through February 7.

Charlotte’s soft, feminine voice and mannerisms combined with her masculine outfit, is so alluring. She’s my favorite Jane Eyre of all time.
When Charlotte was 13 she played the lead character in a film called L'effronte about a bored, yearning girl during summer vacation. It is absolutely one of the most touching movies about that age of adolescence. You can see all the special qualities that Charlotte possesses in this smaller version of herself.
She was wonderful in that film! I will never forget the line: "Tu trouves pas que la vie, elle est brusque?"

J'aime beaucoup cette vidéo où Jane Birkin et Charlotte Gainsbourg sont ensemble et se confient assez librement, peut-être parce qu'elles parlent en anglais et que l'interview a lieu à New York. J'apprécie beaucoup leur complicité. On voit à quel point Jane est une mère attentive, délicate et compréhensive. Charlotte est touchante lorsqu'elle évoque son père.

Ah so good to see a recent interview with them. Charlotte's voice is so different to anyone else's voice.
But, the buzzing from the feedback through the mics was very off-putting. You should have tested it out before the interview (must do for next time).

Je trouve que toutes les 2 n'ont pas un anglais vraiment courant comme on pourrait l'imaginer. Etrange? Jane a un accent plutôt français en anglais.
Mon Dieu comme Jane a changé, elle doit être sous antidépresseurs ou neuroleptiques, pour avoir subit un tel changement physique, elle est enflée, et cela s'est fait rapidement suite à la mort de Kate. Mais quelle mère peut supporter un tel drame??? Surtout de cette façon, son enfant défenestrée.Elle me fait une peine immense, immense. On sent que qq chose s'est produit dans son organisme, c dur de le constater, dur dur, pauvre Jane, et elle n'est pas à un âge ou l'on peut récupérer, la vie doit continuer sans qu'une seconde elle ne pense à son enfant.
