Its called serving the music instead of your ego. Takes time to work through the ego phase and requires ear development and listening to others more than yourself
I have picked up and set down the bass for over 50 years. I have bought hundreds of dollars worth of books, tapes, cds, DVDs, and equipment. And this what I have been looking for. I can't thank you enough. I'm headed out, right now, to try it again at age 65. When the student is ready, the teacher appears. Thank you, thank you, thank you.💖👍🥰🙋♂️...I'm gonna paint by number....at least to start.😉
Awesome @Ken Hieter! And absolutely nothing wrong with painting by numbers at the start. Use the formulas to lay your foundation, and when you're ready, you can build on top of it.
Really got a lot out of this video! Everyone says 'stay with the kick' but I've never heard it explained so simply - 2 easy steps - which makes it way more understandable and doable. Thanks Luke!
This was as damn good video; helpful. There are of course, some famous bassists who don't stay with the kick and some that don't connect the harmony at times. Many or most pop bassists do for sure.
This is 95% of being a bass player, just playing root notes all day, but if you're a motivated and talented bass player and youve got some good theory knowledge, youll learn to jazz up those notes by using filler notes and throwing in some style, some slap etc. But at its core this is bass playing for a lot of music
Great advice, for beginners as well as seasoned bassists, nothing wrong with keeping the bass line simple and in time. Most other musicians will appreciate it.
As a complete beginner, what I love about your approach/videos is that you teach the fundamentals of bass playing that can (depending on skill level and creativity) be applied in differenways. Very different to 'impress your friends with these x most famous bass lines"
This may be simple but it's brilliantly explained, and I love the 'drop out' demonstration. It shows the value of the bassist keeping time & keeping it simple. Thanks Luke, I'm off to practice!
Thank you for this video, which has been by far the most useful to me as a beginner bassist. I now play in a 5 piece folk band, where we dont have a percussionist, but I imagine what a drummer might play as a simple rhythm, and make my bass line follow that. It is surprising how a simple "root notes only" bassline can propel a band......
I like how you presented this idea. It's exactly the approach I used when I was transitioning from guitar to bass almost two decades ago. 😁 Keep up the good work! You're videos are helping a lot of people!
Very helpful video! Im a long time rhythm guitar player and I’m just starting out on the bass. So this video helped me understand the foundations for getting started out... I signed up for your Next Level video, can’t wait to keep learning. Thanks so much!!
Two things? I thought you were gonna say a bass and fingers. Great videos, I have played Guitar for over 40 years and am just starting bass. Your videos are really helpful, especially to know what to focus on with bass.
Hey! I like your videos; keep them coming! I did notice that the levels between your voice and when you’re playing are very different. When I have your voice at a comfortable level I can not hear your bass, but if I turn it up so I hear the bass, it sounds like your yelling. If you can fix that, I’m sure myself and others would benefit even more. Thanks again for your content!
Nice and simple, and yeah, really powerful! Another way you can have fun with it is how long you hold the notes. Swapping from playing a "long short" pattern, to a "short long" pattern can really change the feel, even though you are still just playing roots and with the kick drum. Its the power we have!! :D
Absolutely Phil! There's so much you can do with so little - and great insight about the length of notes. It's one of the most important parts of a groove that's often glanced over.
Luke great job , looking for some bass lessons for my grand son to follow when I'm on the road . Most are to advanced for him right now and this way he will have someone for instruction when I'm gone. I will be visiting your web site.
Thanks! I just got my first bass yesterday after playing a 6 string for 13 years. This was my first time playing along with music and it was a lot of fun.
After many teachers and many hours of trying to get "it" this blows my mind. This is so simple and easy!!! And it's just the first level but if I can get this down the sky's the limit!!! Thank You so much! BTW what drum machine are you using? Thanks!
That's awesome to hear mrzap1! I'm happy this helped you get it! And I'm just using Garageband MIDI drums in this video. I think I used the SoCal kit, but don't quote me on that - I'm not 100% sure.
I clicked the link for Next Level Bass Lines in the video, got the email, signed up, and was taken to a page titled "The Ultimate Guide To The Modes For Bass." Thanks for the free modes guide, but I was looking for the Next Level Bass Lines video. Could you send me a link? Thanks!
Back in the day when I was a jobbing bass player I always made sure I was as near to the drummer as I could be----at his side if possible so I could see his legs (!) and always remember the acronym----KISS, i.e. Keep It Simple Stupid.
As an ex crap bass player, I still say that the bass player is the heart of the band. Lay down the foundation. People want to dance to a band. You can't dance to a bass player playing a million miles an hour. (Victor Wooten and all these "amazing bass player" on youtube playing in the street.
How do you find the "key relatives" i mean if i say okay F Major - do i look on my fretboard whats next to these or how do i find out what keys flow with the F Major?
Thanks so much! To be honest, I'm not 100% sure. I bought it used from a friend and I never really asked him about the specifics. I just liked the way it played and the way it sounded.
What key is the first one and where is the backing tracks because i'm playing a solo set on bass and would love to play this Im australian too by the way.
I started out playing like this and when I got good I played a lot more notes and when I got really good I started playing like this again
Its called serving the music instead of your ego. Takes time to work through the ego phase and requires ear development and listening to others more than yourself
@@bassomatic6055 You are right there, I think that your statement applies to all members playing in a band.
It takes it from chaotic to cohesive.
I love the 'drop out' demonstration. It shows the value of the bassist keeping time & keeping it simple. Thanks Luke, I'm off to practice!

Of all the bass lessons on RUclips, yours make the most sense. Logical and to the point. 👍
That's exactly what I aim for @Zainad Saad - thanks so much!

This is the most clear lesson I have seen in a while, thank you!
Great advice, for beginners as well as seasoned bassists, nothing wrong with keeping the bass line simple and in time. Most other musicians will appreciate it.
Absolutely, I've cringed at some bands where the bass player and drummer don't listen to each other. Ruins the song as it sounds just off..
As a complete beginner, what I love about your approach/videos is that you teach the fundamentals of bass playing that can (depending on skill level and creativity) be applied in differenways. Very different to 'impress your friends with these x most famous bass lines"
Bah! The thumbnail promised me limit theory.
There are no limits
I think he’s actually playing in the key of Ahn-Ahn ...
Great video…. But, yes…. Can you remake it without sounding like the third place contestant in a glory hole competition?
This may be simple but it's brilliantly explained, and I love the 'drop out' demonstration. It shows the value of the bassist keeping time & keeping it simple. Thanks Luke, I'm off to practice!
Love your lessons and enthusiasm. Im a guitarist but your lessons make playing the bass so much fun.
Brilliant! You are an inspiration mate. Not only that, but you make the student feel that they can achieve what you demonstrate.

Glad you like it James - really appreciate it!
One of the most helpful videos I've found for bass. So easy I can do it.
I like your simplification style
Cheers Motwakil! Really appreciate it.
It's an amazing video for beginners! You can explain complex thing in simple way, that's genius.
Good stuff. This is pretty much what I do to learn a song for the most part, then add in some walking bass transitions between the roots... :)
Awesome! The little walk ups connecting the roots is great for taking this formula and adding a little extra flavor to it.
Do you mean walking by connecting octaves?
@@fordhammie yeah, basically
You make everything simple and easier to understand..
Thank you sir
I find your tutorials very informative and the explanations are most helpful.

This is exactly how I play bass if I haven't taken the time to learn the original line. It feels good to hear a pro teach it that way.
If it works, it works!
