  • Nicky Campbell hosts BBC One's Sunday morning debate show that focuses on religion, society and politics. Nicky asks "Is Britain a Christian Country", after recent research from the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science, and Ipsos Mori, suggested Christianity is on the wane and losing its influence. Among those debating are Richard Dawkins, Andrew Copson, Cole Moreton, Jonathan Bartley, Cristina Odone, Majid Katme and Raza Nadim. (BBC The Big Questions, 19th February, 2012)

      actually...there is only one step in the translation..
      In the new testament
      Greek>English
      Greek>French
      Greek>German....etc..etc(you get the point)
      In the old Testement
      Hebrew>English
      Hebrew>French
      Hebrew.German..etc..etc
      And we have actual physical remains of the original texts...and...it has not changed.

    • @davvan125
      @davvan125 9 лет назад

      studmalexy you say that it hasn't changed, and still I've seen those changes. But that was some time ago.
      Also: I don't know about english, but several other languages have been translated many times. For example swedish has been translated to more modern swedish, because the language changes over time, just like the meaning of the words does.
      It has been changed many times.

    I never said there was oversight in both houses, but you can't deny that there is oversight in parliament with the Lords Spiritual. The Queen is a member of the church (as required by law).
    "Only 2 million people regularly attend the Sunday service anymore."
    You know as well as I do that the definition of Christian in the popular consciousness is vague enough to void attending church as a defining factor.

    Question: How does our language come from the Bible? Unless she is referring to the rather colloquial uses of "Jesus" and "God" as exclamations when we are exasperated, or the biblical proverbs/allusions that are used infrequently in English, she is entirely wrong by saying that our language comes from the Bible. The Bible was written in Classical Hebrew, Aramaic and Koine Greek. English is a member of the family (PIE), but is not descended from it, nor has it acquired any significant amounts of everyday words from any of these languages. (Greek is an exception, however the point still stands in regards to the amount of Greek that was passed on to English through Christian scripture as opposed to that which was passed on to English from Latin for scientific nomenclature). It seems to me that she either, 1. Thinks that the Bible was written in English, or 2. Thinks that English comes from Hebrew.
    Both would be very incorrect.

    I'm an American so I don't see many episodes of this show. The question I have to ask is this - is this show's format always like this where they ask highly contentious big questions but then constantly cut people off and not allow them the time to answer properly? I find it annoying that the host biases the debate in favor of dumb positions by only allowing quick one sentence answers and making it a randomized jump from person to person. Reminds me of a Mitchell and Webb sketch I saw once.

    @PoledniceWP By language, I don't think she meant the actual origin of English itself. She's a journalist so I'm hoping what she meant was we have expressions and sentiments that derive themselves from the christian faith. For example when we say "Christ's sake..." Just a little clarification, but we don't want to be throwing around insults like you have there, otherwise I'm fully in accordance with Dawkins.

And then my curiosity took my questions online, the internet definitely helped me see the light. It became clear to me as to why the religious are so intent on silencing any dissenting opinions; because let's face it: it doesn't take much for a logical person to see how utterly absurd religions are.

    The thing is, if you tick the Christian box, you don't know what you're ticking yourself into.
    Once you tick the box for Christian, you are statistically applying yourself to many denominations. Each tenet that is incorporated into those denominations is supported by your vote simply because you checked the "Christian" box.

    Christianity in Britain can be traced back to the third century. The bishops of London, York and Lincoln were present at the Council of Arles in 314, and signed the acts. [Mansi 2:476-7]. St. Athanasius alludes to certain British bishops who participated in the Council of Sardica. [PG 25:249].

    The Bible was first translated into Old English in the 7th Century, but most people consider the King James Bible in the 16th Century the first translation, which in a practical (cultural) sense is correct.

However what is said inside these Houses Of God should not constrain social progress or influence politics. I think that this, as well as the fact that the battle flag that I have as an avatar was not the official confederate flag but simply a battle banner representing something other than a pro-slave government, means that it's a bit harsh to go for the knee jerk 'racist' remark as soon as you see the battle flag without asking me anything.

    We do have quite a lot of answers, and the neat thing is they are based on the evaluation real evidence, rather than just making stuff up like people used to do before they had respect for evidence. When a person like Einstein can predict the existence of black holes, simply from mathematical calculations, before we had the technology to prove it, and THEN decades later, we find a black hole at the centre of every galaxy - thats strong evidence that science is a good way to find the truth.

    Condoms are a potential solution to an already existing original issue. This issue is promiscuity. Promiscuity in universal culture leads to STDs, AIDs, 'unwanted' pregnancy and therefore abortions. Condom success rates will never make the problem disappear in any sector of the world. What I want to know is why people like your good self with good intentions don't make more of an issue out of tackling the base cause - over-sexualisation, rather than try to be simply reactionary.

    As an atheist I believe this is an debate that Richard lost. He failed to get the point of the poll across (fortunately his college later explained it). Also the dishonesty and shouting down style of aproach used by his opponents smothered out any chance he had to formulate a "killer blow" that we are used to from the great man!
    Who here believes that story by the female journolist was anything but an attempted smear? Very dishonest women in my opinion.Also most of the audience missed the point

    Perhaps you are correct in many senses.

    Actually, when she said the language comes from the Bible, I'm guessing she meant that the modern English language spread and surpassed local English dialects thanks to the diffusion of the Bible that was translated in that particular English.

    Well, I don't know for English but I am a native Dutch speaker (I'm from Holland) and Dutch has been very much influenced by the Bible. Constructions as were made in Hebrew and Greek did not exists in the Dutch language when the Bible got first translated. So actually new forms of grammar but also a lot of new phrases and sayings were invented by the first translators of the Bible to write a Dutch version of this book. Maybe for English the same thing happened.

    Have you heard of the saying "A rich man's war fought for by the poor"? in the context of the Civil War?

    You're right in correcting the guy you replied to, however there is one thing I need to set straight, the word "theory" in a scientific context has different meaning to what you think. Evolution is not something that scientists say "it makes the most sense therefore we'll use it until its proven wrong" the difference is that evolution IS scientific fact, it IS proven, people that use the annoying phrase "theres no evidence that's why its a THEORY" just don't understand what they're talking about

    "The language we use every day comes from The Bible." Right, because most Britons lapse into Greek on a daily basis.

    V.
    "...he is drunk asleep, or in his rage,
    Or in the incestuous pleasure of his bed;
    At gaming, swearing, or about some act
    That has no relish of salvation in't;
    Then trip him, that his heels may kick at heaven,
    And that his soul may be as damn'd and black
    As hell, whereto it goes."
    At any rate, it is utterly incontrovertible that Shakespeare is at least rich in allusion to Greek and Roman as to Abrahamic mythology.
    Is any of this inconsistent...

    I don't have an issue with the nativity plays, but if a monarchy is impotent then there's no point in having it at all.

    I certainly am very happy with life. Studying and making an effort to understand as much of the world as I can is very empowering, and means that I have very little stress. Stress is caused by having the illusion of control when really you don't. So understanding the inherent irrationality of the human mind, and making allowances for it, is a good way to avoid stress and disappointment. Believing things that are very unlikely to be true prevents you from understanding the world properly.
