One of the most iconic editions of this race of the last decades, this beautiful monument got a new image of how this race can develop hopefully we will see much more battles between pogacar and van der poel
The person who impressed me most in this race was Ganna. Anyone who has ever ridden in a bike race knows how incredibly hard-both mentally and physically-it is to get back into the leading group after such attacks and a significant deficit, and then to leave behind a top rider and not necessarily a bad sprinter! Unfortunately, he made the mistake of catching up with van der Poel after Pogacar's first attack, who then had nothing better to do than overtake Ganna and hang right on Pogacar's rear wheel.
agree, there was no point on marking each hill attack, he can just elevate the half minute effort and let them attack as they want, kind of 2022 Thomas or classic tom dumolan, but Pippo can push 300w 10minutes down hill to chase againts hight speed wind. and then cut with chirugical precision the time on flat against two best riders in the world. uuuuuh! Pogi failed so much and started so late even strategically perfectly behind Ganna.
If Pogi and Mathieu realy pushed on he would never come back they let him get back so both must watch 2 riders not one and phisical problems they have all riders.
I can't remember ever seeing Pog grimace so much as he did in that sprint. MVDP timed his sprint to perfection, right as Gana was taking a peek over his shoulder to see where Pog was.
I would be so happy if Michael Mathews could win one day - he's always so close. But with Pog and VDP battling it out, I think the opportunity has passed.
im hoping for a repeat of this. but i don't see MVDP on the entry list of Milando Sanremo for this year. please UCI give us another amazing race like this one
Jesus, how could Pog stuff up a sprint so badly! Of all the worst positions, trying to come over MVP, a better sprinter, from 3rd wheel! Pog absolutely will Never get anywhere close to Coppi, Merckx, Anquetil, Hinault until he races a few sixes! He will improve his sprinting, leg speed, positional awareness, and bike handling immeasurably if he does start racing track. All the true greats raced track as well. To lose this sprint so comprehensively, being beaten in a sprint by Ganna, that's the clearest indication that he has light years to go to be thought of in the same vein as the Greatest Athlete, Cyclist of All time, Le Cannibale!
Not sure why this got recommended, but good to rewarch Cipressa and Poggio. Pogacar can be hopeful for 2026. He got to Cipressa in a far worse position than MVDP, who was 1st wheel right from the start (and Ganna just behind). Pogacar had to come back with help of Narvaez - and only one other UAE rider to set the pace. Once Pogacar attacked, Ganna dug deep, while MVDP sat on his wheel and saved a ton of power - he looked really fresh. Then once Pogacar attacked on Poggio, MVDP looked back in time to start sprinting even before Pogacar came past him. So all in all, MVDP was flawless, while Pogacar and UAE did quite a few mistakes. Obviously each race is completely different, so just hoping for no injuries or crashes / punctures and let them fight it out again.
The positioning really was not that much different. Maybe an extra rider would have made a difference on Cipressa, maybe not, MVDP always looked in complete control. And even with a small gap on top of Cipressa there is a chance MvDP and Ganna come back. Analyses before and after these races always make it seem as if Pogi is destined to win and only external factors can make him loose. But the reality is that on this terrain and in PR MVdP at his best has an advantage over Pogi. Pogi needs a bit of luck or MVDP being a bit below par to win these races. It will probably happen at some point, just not because he blasted peak MVDP off his wheel.
MvdP never lost control in 2025, no matter what Pogi tried. This was not about positioning, this was about who was the strongest. Those 3, by far, and MvdP was the best of those. I wish Pogi luck this year, gonna be tough with Mathieu seeming super strong already. Looking forward to a great classics season this year, and both Omloop and Kuurne did not let down! :)
@patricenatalini66 Begitu ya, padahal saya menyaksikan tayangannya di RUclips, dia (Poga) selalu memimpin didepan.. Melakukan lop panjang... Sedangkan pembalap Italia konsisten pada kayuhanya.
In a race like this, to me, if you're that close--1 / 2 / 3--on the line--milli-seconds apart... you all "won" the race. You know? Their efforts were EXACTLY the same... over 300k... and they crossed the line together--almost a minute ahead of the rest of the riders. How can you really say that ONE of them was the "winner"? This is exactly what is wrong with our society today. Too much focus on marginal gains and marginal wins. At the end of the day, it's just some dudes getting paid way too much to ride bicycles around Europe... which most people actually PAY to do. Not a big deal.
The fact that Gana got back on Pogi and MVDPs wheel is impressive in itself.

Facial hair takes almost 5 - 10 watts @43kph
@lisashiela9137 Very important for some athletes: You have to die in style! 😁
Ganna is 2 times TT world champ and holds the hour world record, so he knows how to suffer.
If Pogi and Mathieu realy pushed on he would never come back they let him get back so both must watch 2 riders not one and phisical problems they have all riders.
Only two months to the next edition!!!

Schitterend om weer terug te zien

Kenapa Poga malah mengurangi kecepatan disaat mendekati finish
il savait déjà qu'il était battu, il a voulu observer voir si il 'aurait une opportunité :)

pogacar is carrying the 2 for so long..thats why they saved enough energy to the finish line
Bs, same effort
You are right, but that is tactics, nothing else.MVDP does not have to attack this early, Pogi does..
Tadej, you fucked this up.
He must have learned to start much earlier and not to play tactics at the end.

@NLOsiris Another what?
Eddy 7 , tadej 0
Eddy 7, Raden 1
Ownee ik heb die van volgend jaar al meegeteld 😅
Pogi said something before the final attack and he deliberately pulled back behind after that. Looks like a setup
Er is geen betere dan Wuyts…
