- f there's something bad, and you don't like it, then you need the Nerd. He's soon tackling something worse than ghosts, when he reviews Ghostbusters for the NES. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 21.
Ghostbusters was one the one most popular and innovative movies of the eighties and a huge part of several generations childhoods. It starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis Ernie Hudson and Rick Moranis. The movie was a leap ahead in special effects in its day, and a legitimate phenomenon.
It was only a natural evolution that this franchise would translate to other mediums and with the video game boom of the eighties of course there had to be games made. What a great idea, we thought.
The game was published by Activision and released in 1986, a full 2 years after the movie. A game that had plenty of time to learn from the mistakes of the previous versions on Atari and Commodore 64, but instead chose to just port the same horrible game.
What's scarier than ghosts, ghouls and dodging drunk drivers? Stairs In this part one of a three part series, the Nerd reviews the 8-bit incarnation on Nintendo of the original Ghostbusters. We learn how NOT to make a movie adaptation and the heartbreak and anger from childhood that still resides in the Nerds heart. Also ghost vacuums.

I just realised... the game is an endless cycle of chasing after things you can barely afford, driving around aimlessly, performing the same tasks over and over again while not being prepared for what really matters and being in constant need of gasoline. All while the radio is blasting the same song for all eternity. It is a perfect metaphor for adulthood.

I think it's more of the fact that AVGN videos tend to use the music directly from the gameplay, and since this is the ONLY song in the game, there literally weren't a lot of options

This video takes me back to the past. I remember when it came out, I was so hyped. I had been moving out of my house and had nothing in the room except a chair, so I sat back and watched it. James has some of the most rewatchable content on RUclips. I feel like I've seen all his early avgn episodes at least thirty times each.

I came back to rewatch these after the recent video where he stated he won't review the new film. And damn, just seeing and feeling his pure love for the Ghostbusters series, all those toys he played with and *still has*, and his knowledge of the films... it makes his rejection of the reboot all the more relatable. More power to you, James.

The scariest thing about this game was that it was designed by David Crane, same guy who designed Pitfall!
J Mill But Pitfall was a good game in its time.
I'll bet Crane was a protege of Fred Fuchs.
He probably had to create it against an unreasonable deadline to be in time for movie release tie-in profits, like with the E.T. game. Also, the home computer versions of Ghostbusters aren't as bad as the NES port.

I used to play this on the Commodore 64 back in the 80's. I always thought it was an OK game for the time. But I never did win it. Also many aspects look very different between the NES version shown here and the C64 version.

EDIT: Well, it may be two years late, but I finally figured it out; it's actually both. James called an actual store to ask about ghost vacuums, then had Kyle dub over the store employee's voice.

I freaking loved that game. Played the hell out of it on the C64, though it had some important differences:
1 you started in the shop
2 there was no such thing as fuel
3 you didn't have that godsawful stair climbing thing. It was entirely skipped! You had to get passed the marshmallow man instead, which was quite difficult but very short.
4 even if you died, you got a password which would let you start again with all the money you made the last time, which may sound crap to you, but made for a lot of replayability for me.
5 there was no time limit to enter the zuul building, in fact it sucked you in and you entered it immediately, which would suck if you had that stair thing, but in the c64 version it was fine.
