Very interesting to see how a Japanese person ranks their difficulty, quite surprised with a few placements here lol. Bae I would personally put as "Advanced", probably swap her with Mumei or Gura. Though that's because I personally struggled severely to understand the thick Australian accent (like Bae's :p) for the longest time, had an Australian friend I played MMO's with a long time ago, eventually picked up on it lol. Actually curious why some might consider American English to be harder than Australian. There's only three US American accents/dialects that I personally consider extraordinarily difficult, two of them southern, the Alabama and Appalachian accents, the third being the Hawaiian dialect lol.
People have confused Mumei and Gura with each other because of their similar voice. So it makes sense you view them fairly equal in terms of difficulty.

Moom is a pure stream of thoughts. Even as someone online and ESL since a child, if I don't pay attention I wouldn't know what she's talking about before she moves to a totally random sentence. @@hololiveEN-sounds Talking speed can be a big issue. Marine, for example, talks too fast for me to understand even a little bit of her speech, while Watame is easier. A lot of the times it comes to lack of vocabulary, or lack or context in the conversation. Game streams are helpful in trying to comprehend what talents are saying, especially if the game has written dialouge. But for a zatsuzan stream, I have no reference to latch on to. I believe English viewers say Marine is the hardest to understand, since she talks the fastest, as well lots of slang use. Hope that helps!
@@hololiveEN-sounds It's pretty similar to the points that you wrote in this video, but I believe the main factors are speed and vocabulary. The faster speakers obviously make it more difficult to catch the specific words that they're saying, but listen to them long enough and you should be fine (eg. maybe Subaru, speaks relatively fast and slurs words together sometimes but language is otherwise straightforward imo). The more problematic issue is vocabulary, which without context means absolutely nothing to the listener. Wordplay, slang, contractions (at least uncommon ones, unlike なきゃ etc.), accents (eg. Korone's Kansai-ish accent which can be thick sometimes), and simply a broader vocabulary consisting of terms not often used by other streamers (since that's where most listeners listen to jp) all fall under this category.
@@deadzipper1777 I absolutely agree. Talking speed can be a problem when you start listening to them, but after a while you'll get used to it and hear what they say accurately most of the time. The biggest problem for me is the vocabulary, especially the more nuanced and/or obscure ones. I've been listening to Marine for quite a while, and while I can say I'm used to her speed I definitely cannot say the same for her complex vocabulary. Oh, and listening to many people talk at the same time can be quite challenging too. When listening to collab streams (especially the off-collab ones where the sound may not be as clear), I find it quite hard to catch what everyone is saying at the same time. I’m a native English speaker, but I want to get better at using simple English with English learners at work. This video is super helpful for me, in the opposite way! Thank you!
My recommendations are: ① Use simpler words instead of slang or jargon, but not skip important words like “a” and “for”. (Calli tried this in her KTaNE stream with Korone, but it ended up harder to understand.) ② Enunciate, since the learners may not be used to the sound changes that come with faster speech - keep consonant “slurring” to a minimum, e.g. enunciate the “-t r-” in “Should I get rid of it?”. ③ Try to make the relationship between sentences clear, by using conjunctions like “and”, “so”, “because”, and “then”. Bonus: In one-on-one conversations, wait between sentences to make sure the listener understands.
I've never noticed this, but I can see why Gura and Mumei may be hard to understand for Japanese viewers. They speak quite fast and sometimes jump form one topic to another. They also tend to have slightly slurred speech. 13:04 Don't worry, nobody understands that part 草
Cali, Irys and Fauna all speak very clear crisp English. Even as a native the difference is clear. But then beyond them, it is very difficult for me to notice the differences. It is interesting to see the perspective of a Japanese speaker.
3 English speakers I'd put in Beginner category among Holo mems is Ollie, Reine & Zeta (when they're not code switching & speaking in English fully) they have neutral accents, normal speech pace, clear annunciations, minimal slang
Speed is a major factor huh? The girls do have *mostly* clean pronunciation and manageable accents. So speed, and the girl mumbling or just speaking stream of thoughts in general makes it harder because JP-niki can't catch all the context yet before they move to the next thought.
12:59 What Mumei said, as transcribed by a native English speaker. Mumei is 早口. Mumei: Playing a game again is cheating? Doing it again is cheating? (incomprehensible mountain of angry, speedy gibberish with the words "speedrunning" and "again" somewhere in there) I'm speedrunning it, right? The point of the speedrun is to memorize everything so it's okay for me to check. I'm not trying to prove that I have a really good memory here, I'm trying to prove that I can do it faster than usual, but I'm not doing it faster than usual, but that's okay 'cause it takes practice and I'm doing it by myself for the first time, so I'm only doing it for the first time.
Here's what I hear in the gibberish section: "(Mumble mumble) I'm trying to learn how to speedrun and I can't learn if I don't know what I'm doing then I can't speedrun it, right?" But I had to listen to it at 0.5x speed.
Gura and Mumei are difficult for beginner because their brain spin faster. Gura is rhythm game master and Mumei type super fast. So they speak in a faster pace plus connected speech that may make it difficult for beginner. But Gura actually pronounce each word very crisp.
They also tend to stumble over certain words, which I can imagine throws off people who have to pay close attention to understand English. I'm an English speaker only, though, so I might be totally wrong and that's not the case.
Mumei is hard to understand even for a native English speaker when she speaks fast and high pitched so don't worry. 笑 Some younger girls talk like that as a joke during moments of excitement or laughter and know you won't understand them. Often times, they aren't actually fully speaking the words. When I was in high school girls did it.
Don't mind me, just getting an understanding on who are hard for foreign listeners to follow along among EN member. Also lowkey practicing reading and learning new words in Japanese lol. Very interesting video! It is very true that it is all about getting used to them and often even native speakers can just get the gist of what the members are saying by listening to context and keywords.
Thanks for the vid, it’s so awesome to see how JP bros this same kind of interest but on EN members. To be honest though, i don’t know why you guys rank Miko so low when she’s the only JP member I can watch because I can understand her Japanese clearly.
It is joke, She speaks like a baby sometimes. and they can not catch what she is saying even their mother tongue is Japanese. Way to her speak Japanese called elite English from JP Bros. They don't think her Japanese as Japanese sometimes.

I’m a native English speaker, but I want to get better at using simple English with English learners at work. This video is super helpful for me, in the opposite way! Thank you!
My recommendations are:
① Use simpler words instead of slang or jargon, but not skip important words like “a” and “for”. (Calli tried this in her KTaNE stream with Korone, but it ended up harder to understand.)
② Enunciate, since the learners may not be used to the sound changes that come with faster speech - keep consonant “slurring” to a minimum, e.g. enunciate the “-t r-” in “Should I get rid of it?”.
③ Try to make the relationship between sentences clear, by using conjunctions like “and”, “so”, “because”, and “then”.
Bonus: In one-on-one conversations, wait between sentences to make sure the listener understands.
定期的にこの動画見てるけど、だんだん聞き取れるようになってくるの感じるわ
ぐらちゃんは音声の聞き取り難度そのものよりも、切り口の頭の良さとスラング全開の言い回しに置いてかれることが多いな
わからん箇所はアーカイブで何回聞いても何言ってるかわからん…
I've never noticed this, but I can see why Gura and Mumei may be hard to understand for Japanese viewers. They speak quite fast and sometimes jump form one topic to another. They also tend to have slightly slurred speech.
13:04 Don't worry, nobody understands that part 草
個人的には、カリオペの喋りが一番聞き取りやすい。
話速は高めだけど、滑舌がとてもいいし、かなり丁寧な発音をしているので、単語を追いやすい。
I hope all JP niki can get to a stage where they can enjoy Mumei's streams. Ganbatte!
It's like we hoping we can get to a stage where we can understand Miko's streams someday.
@@naaat wwwwwww
Bijou
Cali, Irys and Fauna all speak very clear crisp English. Even as a native the difference is clear.
But then beyond them, it is very difficult for me to notice the differences. It is interesting to see the perspective of a Japanese speaker.
This seems just about the speed. If it was just about the level of English, then it's probably Fauna
3 English speakers I'd put in Beginner category among Holo mems is Ollie, Reine & Zeta
(when they're not code switching & speaking in English fully)
they have neutral accents, normal speech pace, clear annunciations, minimal slang
Speed is a major factor huh? The girls do have *mostly* clean pronunciation and manageable accents. So speed, and the girl mumbling or just speaking stream of thoughts in general makes it harder because JP-niki can't catch all the context yet before they move to the next thought.
見つけて秒で登録しました!!!
ムメイが可愛すぎるけど喋るのが早くて難しいなと思ってました!
最後めっちゃおもろい笑
字幕付けるとマジでムメイ難しいの分かるな
字幕見ながら聞いても話すスピードに追いつかんわ

What Mumei said, as transcribed by a native English speaker.
I'm not trying to prove that I have a really good memory here, I'm trying to prove that I can do it faster than usual, but I'm not doing it faster than usual, but that's okay 'cause it takes practice and I'm doing it by myself for the first time, so I'm only doing it for the first time.
bruh
Here's what I hear in the gibberish section:
"(Mumble mumble) I'm trying to learn how to speedrun and I can't learn if I don't know what I'm doing then I can't speedrun it, right?"
But I had to listen to it at 0.5x speed.
Some younger girls talk like that as a joke during moments of excitement or laughter and know you won't understand them. Often times, they aren't actually fully speaking the words. When I was in high school girls did it.
Mumeiさんの歌があまりうますぎて推します。是非とも
JPメンバーの日本語versionだとどうなるんだろうな?
船長が上級にいそうなのは想像できるんだが
英語字幕助かります!!
クロニー本当に聞きやすい
今回デビューしたFuwawaちゃんの英語も結構聞き取るのムズイ。
ふわもこの英語聞き取りやすいって思ったけど違ったか。
ふわもこの二人は基本聞き取りやすいものの、「舌足らず語」の知識を知らないと聞き取れない部分があるはず。
RをWに置き換えたりするやつ
@@bitplane_chan はえー。当たり前ではあるけど、みこちみたいなしゃべり方の人もいるってことか(悪意はない)
慣れると文脈でなんて言ってるかわかる感じなのかな。
@@bitplane_chan なるほど。アドバイスありがとう👍
フワモコは二人で喋るから自動字幕が来ても補完されない部分が多いのもシンプルに初学者にはキツい
