I’m this old and still amazed at how animals can be more intelligent that I’ve ever considered. Watching that heron pull the bread out so the bigger fish wouldn’t eat it was mind blowing.
Animals are much more intelligent than most people realize. They are actually smarter than us in many ways, but some people are close minded and think that they can't speak our language etc they're dumb. We don't think like animals and need to put ourselves in their perspective to understand more about their intelligence. Just putting this out there.

As an avid free diver and spearfisherman i can tell you fish are a lot smarter than you think as well. Some species are more intelligent than others. Some species also have very different personalities and levels of curiosity.
Go to a shallow portion of the river that still gets decent sized fish. Join your hands forming a rough circle with your arms. Wait. Fish will eventually get used to your presence, as long as you don't move much. When one swims over your hands, heave up and to the shore. I have legitimately caught fish and one time an eel this way. It works, if you're hungry enough to have patience. Lol No gear or bread required. 😉
I love how it waited for the right size fish to come along. And its eyesight! I didn't even see the little fish, even watching several times. I've seen birds do some really smart things. Using bread for bait is now one of them.

I love how he throws it just far enough and just for long enough to attract some interest, but snatches it back in time... This bird has definitely been practicing for a while. I wonder if it learned this from another animal ?
Well I know for sure that I taught a night heron this trick in Hawaii. I used to eat lunch at a stream near work and throw bread scraps into the water for the thousands of small tilapia there. A night heron (who are also out in the day), flew from across the stream when he saw the commotion the small fish were making while eating my bread, and landed right near me in about six inches of water. Herons can’t swim but they can wade in shallow water. I threw a piece of bread next to him and he got ready. Even pushed it into a better position. The fish went nuts for the bread and the heron nailed the fish. I did this every day for months and named my bird “Carl”. He’d see me get out of my truck and come flying across the stream to meet me for lunch. Carl would do the same thing this heron is doing. If a bigger fish came along, he’d grab the bread and save it until it left. Then drop it back in for the smaller fish. Smart bird. I counted one time, Carl eating about a dozen little fish in one sitting. “Man, Carl aren’t you full yet?” When I went back to work I’d leave some bread for Carl as bait, he’d grab it and fly across the stream to his nest or whatever. I know for sure that heron’s won’t eat bread because Carl accidentally got a piece of bread in his beak while going for a fish and violently spit it out. You should have seen the look on his face. Like soggy bread was the most disgusting thing he ever had in his mouth. Can’t disagree there, soggy bread will make most people gag. So I know he saved it for bait. Those were good times and it made me wonder how long humans have been doing this with herons? Maybe for thousands of years. Or maybe, herons have always used some kind of floating bait for fish and know that humans have a lot of it and feed the fish. However it started, it is amazing to watch and fun to be a part of it. Peace and aloha to you all. 🤙🏼
One more quick observation. Notice how this video is of a Koi pond. The owner of this pond has obviously done this before with this heron. The heron got the bread from the owner of the pond or visitor of the pond and this whole relationship most likely started out like mine and Carl’s did. Also, there’s no other herons in the area to share this with. That’s because herons are super aggressive toward each other and won’t allow others near them. Carl used to chase off other herons who tried to get involved with his gig and man was he mean. He’d let out a screech that even scared me when I first heard it. He’d stretch out his neck and charge any bird in his area. He’s gonna stab them with his sharp beak. Of course, no other herons would get stabbed and flew away from the trouble that Carl had intently focused on. Animal fights are mostly a bluff just like human fights. Herons don’t play nice with other herons. So likewise, you see this heron alone and he’s not sharing his human friend with any other damn herons. I just love them.
The level of calculation here is amazing. I tried a similar experiment some years ago based on a hypothetical bush survival scenario. I settled at the edge of a marshy area where there were frogs that darted away at my approach. I broke off tiny twigs and started tossing them in the water at an arms' reach distance. It's the tiny ripple when it lands on the surface that triggers their impulse to investigate. It didn't take me long to nab a couple of big juicy bullfrogs that a starving person would find some way to consume. That success felt like useful bushcraft knowledge. But this little feathered fisherman is next level - you can't even see the little minnow he was hunting until it was in his beak!
If I recall, green herons are nicknamed "fishing herons" because they do this. No one knows how they learned it or anything, but you can catch them doing it in the wild quite often. Especially nature parks in Florida, you can catch them doing this in any open enclosure with a stocked pond.
@@فاطمهالزهراء-ض2غ It's actually very interesting with herons, there's several species with novel hunting strageties-not completely unlike unique strategies employed by specific groups of dolphins- and I believe the scientific consensus is just that an ancestor of this species somehow figured this out (turns out animals are far smarter than we thought), and then passed the strategy onto it's kin. It's the best hypothesis out there we have , that I know of at least
@@bringonthevelocirapture Did you ever wonder how humans figured out how to grind grass seed into flour and mix it with water and bake bread? Billions of years? Nope, God gave the bird knowledge just like He gave it to us.
It's really not a hard thing to figure out. We ground literally everything and mixed it with water. And that's a weird thing to point out, especially when it's clearly indicated in the bible that nobody's inherently born with the knowledge to do anything. It's kinda presupposed upon that point.
It is indeed very rare to see animals use tools in such a conscious way. Shows high level of intelligence. Often, while watching them it becomes clear how much we can actually learn from them. All things we've lost along the way due to our disconnect from nature. It's funny to see humans go backwards while animals evolve. Respect.

This Heron is smart asf as it not only managed to selectively pick the appropriately sized fish but its managed to caught one that was perfectly camouflaged underwater. Truly incredible.
Green herons are one of the few species of bird known to use tools. In particular, they commonly use bread crusts, insects, or other items as bait. The bait is dropped onto the surface of a body of water in order to lure fish. When a fish takes the bait, the green heron will then grab and eat the fish. When green herons catch large frogs, they will drown them before swallowing them whole.
This is forward thinking, showing how smart birds actually are, crows are another bird that use this exact same strategy…. Rather than eating the bread they are aware it can be used to obtain a better meal with patience and skill….. clever birds 👍👍👍🐤🐤🐤😎

@@jackiedelvalle No. English is flawed for using "it" for ANY animal. "It" is for objects. Animals shouldn't be seen that way. Just use "them" like we use for people now. Just as easy, without lumping animals together with objects. That type of bs helps people disregard animals when they're living beings just like us and should be seen as such. That's one of the few things I dislike about English. Thank goodness in my language there's no "it". A dog is a "he" and a cat a "she" if we don't know for sure what they are, and that's fine since animals don't know/care about pronouns. But at least we don't talk about them as if they're objects.

@@wanicki3575 100th monkey theory though?
@@wanicki3575 So who/what taught the senior? Or is it turtles all the way down?
“Man, Carl aren’t you full yet?”
When I went back to work I’d leave some bread for Carl as bait, he’d grab it and fly across the stream to his nest or whatever.
NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL FISHING, WITHOUT ANY EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT!!
SMART BIRD!!!
If I recall, green herons are nicknamed "fishing herons" because they do this. No one knows how they learned it or anything, but you can catch them doing it in the wild quite often. Especially nature parks in Florida, you can catch them doing this in any open enclosure with a stocked pond.
They would’ve observed people fishing, and seen bread as something that attracted the fish
It's really not a hard thing to figure out. We ground literally everything and mixed it with water. And that's a weird thing to point out, especially when it's clearly indicated in the bible that nobody's inherently born with the knowledge to do anything. It's kinda presupposed upon that point.

Green herons are one of the few species of bird known to use tools. In particular, they commonly use bread crusts, insects, or other items as bait. When green herons catch large frogs, they will drown them before swallowing them whole.

I used to watch green herons working pools of water under the 126 bridge over the Congaree in Columbia, SC. Beautiful birds, far more interesting to watch hunt than white egrets or blue herons. Very mobile, very intelligent.
I really do wish animals could talk so we could learn so much more about them.
That is amazing! I didn't know that the herons were smart enough to bake bread
Moral: Use what you have to get what you want.
I'm pretty sure that's *amoral
how amazing, but please I have a question: who taught the heron to catch fish with this technique??!!
and who taught him to remove the bait from fish that are too big to eat???!!!!

As soon as his basspro card is approved, he’s gonna gear up.
I heard he opened a new business by now
Next he'll be telling friends the size of the one that got away.
Right at the beginning you can see a larger piece of bread on the pavement (bottom right corner).
I think the heron tore off a small piece so he could have more attempts, and maybe attract smaller fish. So much interesting stuff to ponder on in a short 1min video
This was damn awesome ,I mean I thought why it's again picking it back when fat fishes are around But what a lesson this bird gave with respect to patience, focus, key agenda, goal and best use of limited resources ...
Na na I need only my type my size ... 👍👍👍
I watched a bird trying to catch fish once and he was having no luck. Then he saw people feeding the fish bread and the bird went over and grabbed a piece of bread but instead of eating the bread it did what this bird done and used the bread to catch a fish. He angled those fish. That is just brilliant.
thats impressive, could see what fish were too big... pulled his line in, recasted again with his shimano stella and waited for the right strike...

One of the best battle strategists I have even seen. He/she knows her own strength, and concentrates only to prey on the small fishes.
"It knows its own...." makes life easier and is appropriate for non-pet animals 😊
It was amazing to see that the bird had a clear plan, the bird was selective in it's target, and the bird got the reward after using patience. I had no idea birds used food like that to hunt

No.
Not only does it know to fish, but at 0:45 he drops the bread too far and blows behind or sucks it back in to retrieve it. Amazing.
@J C
I think one of the black fish pushed the bread back as it was trying to eat the bread.

That's absolutely amazing. Animals are much smarter than we give them credit for.
There's a video of a seagull in Scotland that waits outside a shop until customers leave, then he casually strolls in and shoplifts a packet of his favourite crisps.
that is one smart bird, realising that it can trade a little piece of bread for a nice juicy fish and ensures that no fish that are too big takes it.

This is fascinating. He's sizing which fish he want's to catch. That shows a level of intelligence.
Heron's are VERY smart in there fishing tactics. I've seen them do these before while out in the field observing them. I've got nearly 30yrs experience in the avian field and have worked "hands on" with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey.

There are instances of birds dropping acorns or in-shell nuts on a road, waiting for a car to drive over and crush the shell, and then retrieving the nut.

That is a phenomenal display of animal intelligence! It even pulled back the bread from the multiple fish that were to large to be eaten. What I'm wondering is why that bread didn't get all soggy and fall lpart
im sure it was old discarded bread prolly a bit harder than fresh..not saying it was rock hard but def a lot harder than fresh ,it had more durability

You sure that wasn't an _anhinga_ and not a heron? They look similar to herons, but are shorter and actually dive for fish. Herons can only really float as far as I'm aware, and usually fish by wading.
