Mrs Video 99 here. Only just had a moment to watch this video. I didn't know you back then. I was living in Ivybridge and would have sat in the huge queue on the A38 down to Marsh Mills roundabout (during the construction of the flyover) on my route to work which seemed to take forever to get through each time. I was learning to drive and my Mum would sit in the passenger seat of my 1988 Renault 5 Campus. I passed my test that year.

Lifelong Plymothian here and this a wonderful trip down memory lane. Thanks. :) I'm so glad you survived that treachorous and life-threatening journey without lane and speed restriction and average speed cameras. ;) Marsh Mills roundabout without traffic lights... :) I passed my driving test in March of this year so had a few enjoyable years driving without big brother watching. :)

I was born in Plymouth in 1991 at the Freedom Fields hospital which no longer exists.
Although I have no memories from the year this was filmed I do remember how parts of Plymouth used to be before they were redeveloped.
My parents had a car during the 90s but I have very few memories of being in it or driving around Plymouth at the time so this is really interesting to be able to see.
    Thanks for uploading it.

In 1991 I was a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area in California driving a Chevrolet Camaro V8 on my daily commute. In the year 2000 I found myself in Plymouth working in the Yard! Lived there for 19 years and got to know it pretty well. All the parochial stuff. The estates etc. I now live in the Scottish Highlands but am currently visiting friends in Plymouth. The roads and traffic systems have altered massively in the past 5 years that I have been away. Your video is only 33 years ago but Plymstock and Elburton look the same which is good. We stopped at McDonalds on Pompflett roundabout just the other night. Polite well spoken staff. My dad had a Hillman Avenger that he bought in 1976 from NATO cars on returning from Cyprus. Lovely car. Top of the range GT I think. Gold. Probably the reason why I bought such an extravagant muscle car when I moved to the States on leaving the Forces. Many thanks for the nostalgia sir!

I've lived in Plymouth since 1984 and it's fascination to see the changes that have happened since then. I also owned a Hillman Avenger, a 1974 model 1600GT in a lovely shade of metallic turquoise blue, with a black vinyl roof, fancy alloys and twin Stromberg carbs. It went like stink for the time. Great fun. Thanks for posting.

Nice car. Avengers were some of the very first cars to be sold with metallic paint in the UK. Those twin carbs could be a pain to set up and made the car a bit thirsty, but what a hoot to drive.

9:47 Lovely 1993 Suzuki GSXR750M slipping through all the ancient square boxes looking a bit like a spaceship from another planet. Had one of those back in the day, 0-60 in 3 seconds and 165mph top end, bit of a departure from an '83 Triumph Acclaim 😁 10:36 a MK1 MG Maestro 1600 - had one of those too!

Really enjoyed this video thank you for sharing it. I moved to Plymouth in the summer of 91 and remember what a nightmare the traffic was around marsh mills. Looking back years later not much has changed in terms of congestion although the road surface is a little smoother and it’s easier to navigate round on the bike.😊. I’m not sure what the speed limits were in those days but it seemed appropriate at the time. Loved to comment you made about the BMW driver😂.

My uncle in Totnes owned an Avenger. In the late 1990s I had a job interview at the Plessey wafer fab. It was owned by Mitel Semiconductor at the time. Plessey bought it back just a few years later.

I was born in 1998, a common feeling amongst people my age is we missed out. Would have loved to experience these days for myself - though, I’m lucky enough to have owned and driven many cars from the 70’s to the 90’s, I really enjoy experiencing first hand what people drove back then, I’ve had Astras, Escorts/Orions mainly, but, my favourite definitely has to be the mk3 Ford Fiesta, I’ve had over ten of them and I can’t get enough of hoarding them! I just spent two years restoring one. You’ve inspired me to try and find an Avenger for sale!
Also, interesting to see quite a few 8 wheeler tippers in the video as that’s what I drive for a living.
Thanks for the video and the on screen information as well!

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  18 дней назад +1

Avengers are a hoot to drive when they're in good order. Look for a 1500 or 1600 though, not the 1250/1300. My pet hate of cars of that time was the MK1 Fiesta, a noisy, tinny little rust bucket. But I suppose the Metro was worse really.

    • @aidans9010
      @aidans9010 18 дней назад

@ I’m definitely familiar with Metros, I believe they were so bad with rust that they actually introduced a gimmicky rust warranty on them. The later Rover Metro, an essentially unchanged car, scored a gut wrenching 1 star rating on one of the first Euro NCAP crash tests in 1997! My Aunt had a Metro Jet Black which was quite literally falling to pieces on the driveway at only ten years old.
I’ll definitely take your advice on that, I’m in awe at the sound of that gearbox whine, watching it climb that steep hill keeping up with the newer cars was great. Also, what are those three spikes on your wipers? They look really cool!

I do believe Mr McCormick made a Hillman Avenger contribution to the smallest, dullest motor magazine of all (Jalopy) at around the same time as this, as I indeed did myself! Fascinating video Sad, sad to hear that the Avenger got rammed, glad that it was fixed though.
Everybody seems to stop nose-to-tail without allowing a safety gap.
"Tyres and Tarmac" was my driving instructors' mantra for when stopping behind another vehicle.
There seems to be a lot less in the way of road furniture to distract the driver than we have these days.

Lush. Back in a much simpler time where cars had a character and most looked different.. not boring and samey as modern tosh. I have recordings from around 88 taken on my first camcorder.. An Amstrad vmc100. Its happy and sad looking back. Seeing friends and relatives that have long since passed on is... Wow..and the girlfiends of Christmas past... Ouch ... Nice to see my old bikes and cars though. I have a 1990 Mr2 series 1 and love it to bits and it turns heads and i cannot stop anywhere without threat of somebody saying how nice it is. One thing though, what cannot be captured on your film footage , is the smells you would have been experiencing... cars back then ran really rich and many burnt oil... Unlike todays modern cars. My friend took me and my then girlfriend and another mate to Alton Towers in a mustard yellow Hillman Avenger... We were followed by another load of mates in a red Escort 1.3 MK2. We drove the 130 mile journey without a hitch.... Until we got into the car park. Davis.... Driving the Hillman and who was impatient to get parked up to go on the rides could not stop and very slightly tapped a micra that slammed his brakes on for no apparent reason, but James driving behind us in the Escort smashed into the Hillman and an Eplater Orion(2 years old in 1989) went into the back of James. Only the Micra was not written off. James's Escort was 2 foot shorter, the Orion had front end crumpled above the bumper and Davis's Hillmans back end was a mess. My Gfs dad drove up to collect us at the end of the day and the rest limped it home in the Hillman. We got into Alton Towers for free to seek medical attention but the screams from some of the party with sore necks was heard as we took our first trip on the Black Hole lol. Not many can claim to have had a 4 car pile up in Alton Towers car park thanks for sharing. .

Hi, thanks for sharing this video, I live in Ernesettle now, but used to come to Plymouth in the 90s with a shipping container lorry, used to load up just off the Plessy roundabout, with office stuff, plus a few other places around here, I worked out of Southampton container port, I moved here about 17 years ago. I used to have a Sony camcorder in the 1990s, found it the other day, unfortunately it has stopped working. I have subscribed to your channel, so will keep an eye on it. Merry Christmas.

Been here since 1997 , that area at 12:50 has had a massive change that cost the city over 50 million quid 😏👌🏻

    I also have a 72 Hillman Avenger. It's a August 72 GT, which was a 4 door.
    I'm restoring it slowly.

To be fair that Plymstock Road has not changed too much apart from the speed limit and stupid one lane restrictions now. Thats the construction phase of Marsh Mills Flyover there, Forder Valley, Novorossiysk Hill, past my junction (when the Red car is breaking) and the drive out to Roborough. Lovely trip down memory lane, but traffic was just as busy then which surprised me. Thanks for posting.

I remember the construction phase of that flyover during that year while going on holiday to Cornwall.

Interesting video. I have been in Plymouth since the last 90s but always interested in the history of the local area and how it was.

Geddon. Funny how little has changed around that area of Plymouth over the years although I was too young to remember Marsh Mills being developed I certainly remember the cars of the time

Well done for keeping those tapes in your archives. The amount of interest in this video demonstrates the interest in nostalgia. I always had a soft spot for Rootes cars. My first car was a Rootes in the late 80's. My mates drove battered Ford Escorts, Capris, Morris Marinas and Opel Mantas. I was never a boy racer (which is very difficult in a Marina!) so I went for a 26 year old Hillman Super Minx! I loved that car and regretted parting with it. Last year I put that right and bought a similar model in much better condition. This time I will do it right with a full restoration. Did you know you can deinterlace in Davinci Resolve? I would be interested in your Hi8 capture and grading process. What file format did you capture it in? I know RUclips degrades the quality a bit and Hi8 uses colour under and those early single chip CCD's weren't particularly hi rez. I once had the Sony EVW300P 3 CCD Hi8 camcorder. Because of the relatively narrow video tracks it was always prone to drop outs. The caps eventually failed in the drum servo so it went to the camera graveyard that is ebay!

Being a Plymouth resident all my life its interesting to see just how much has changed, Marsh Mills, Billacombe road junction, Ford Valley/Leigham Roundabout, Novorossiysk, Asda Junction, George junction, all had major changes since 91.

Grew up in Mount Gould and went to Prince Rock Secondary so know these roads well. 1991 I would be blasting around in my RS Turbo and working at Marine Projects.

memory isnt my strong suite , was that when the entire span of the a38 bypass was diagnosed with concrete cancer or was it being prepared to be lifted and shifted to make room for extra bypass span thought that was 1994-5? went to watch that from the novotel and saltram (merafield entrance) bridge, amazing engineering, i remember the huge panels of teflon they slid the bridge on !

They were building it for the first time in 1991. Prior to that, all Cornwall bound traffic had to go round Marsh Mills Roundabout.

I was six when this was filmed, and whilst some of it is hazy, the general layout of it hasn't changed drastically. Kept an eye out for my dad's work vans (he worked for the courier firm Star Express at this point) or his white Yugo Sana, which even then would have been a rare sight. Did you ever consider recreating the same route today for a follow up video?

Just fantastic footage. The video starts outside my house in Elburton two days before I left home and moved to Eastbourne aged 20 in November 1991. Have driven these roads perhaps hundreds of times, in my 1980 MK2 Escort (then, not now!). I almost feel I could be in this video somewhere. Got any more footage? Thanks again.
