This sheer joy ! American Red ,White, & Blue. Love movements 2 and 3 the most. This so much FUN ! Great performance. This is a real Diamond of Americana. I grew up hearing this kind of music on TV and on old cartoons. Its just sounds so familiar. I grew up in NYC and I'm 69 now. Makes me want get up and dance ! Uplifting !

Instantly captivated by April in Harlem on radio. Tried to guess the composer. My best guesses were Samuel Taylor Coleridge or Florence Price.

Great piece, and the 2nd movement ("April In Harlem") is pure beauty. A masterwork by the great master James P.

Eine wunderschöne Jazz Sinfonien. Es ist unglaublich, dass ein so begabter Komponist wie James Price Johnson nicht bekannter ist.

He is known quite widely as a jazz composer. The man who invented the stride playing tecnique.

Thanks for posting this brilliant work. An interesting side note is hat the third movement, Nightclub, is essentially a reworking of a much earlier piano rag called Innovation, which was never published but issued as a hand played piano roll

Thanks for this - they played one of the movements on Radio 3 this morning and I'd never heard of James P Johnson, but now completely hooked!

Conductor Marin Alsop has a long association with the Baltimore Symphony, as well as the Vienna Radio Symphony and Ravinia. My guess is that this might be from the BSO.

I'M DOING RESEARCH ON THE CHORAL MUSIC OF JAMES PRICE JOHNSON AND I DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO FIND THE CHORAL MUSIC... DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY CLUE AS TO WHERE I MIGHT BEGIN?

I would imagine any library in Harlem would have old '78 recordings of his work. Also check out the archives at the Harlem Y if they have any. The Library of Congress should have these records judging by the glut of taxes we pay but I digress. Now the trick is to find a vintage record player. Good luck I'm chasing Waller, the thief Gershwin, Johnson and Blake for an historical fiction novel about the early stride players that goes off into the Life of William Grant Sill.

Is this a modern performance? The audio sounds too good to be from the 1930s.

Where can I get the sheet music? Score and parts?
