    Fun Fact: before Christopher Nolan,started shooting TDK,he gathered the cast and crew and they all watched Heat.According to Nolan,he wanted to get a similar feeling,with his movie.The opening bank heist,where The Joker robs the mafia bank,is heavily influenced by the bank robbery in Heat,in terms of editing,directing,pace etc.

    • @gagelehr7568
      @gagelehr7568 6 лет назад +23

    Nolan's The Dark Knight owes so much to this movie, the symbiotic opposing duality of the protagonist and antagonist, tension and isolation in the urban metropolis. Hell, it even has its own iconic bank heist scene.

    • @Zefferwindow

    Thank you for this great commentary. Still, more than two decades after Heat's release, the gun play and sound effects on Heat's climatic bank heist scene set the benchmark for realistic gun battles that has yet to be matched by another film. The firearms work in this film has made gun battles in other films look like the stuff of childhood reenactments. Heat's shootout scene really immersed the audience in the visceral action, and made them feel both the exhilaration and paralyzing fear that one would experience if one were in the thick of a gun fight. If the Oscar's gave out awards for best action sequences - which they should do, if they are able to award other forms of visual excellence (i.e. best production design, best costume, and best special effects) - Heat would have won that category, hands down, that year.

    • @greatsageequalofheaven9254

      Agree about the firefight. What really moved it to the next level was the characters shooting THROUGH their car windows, which absolutely makes sense. Never been bettered.

    Forgive me, I'm not quite sure how to articulate this, but: one of the things I've always appreciated about an action moment in a Michael Mann film (starting with "Heat" and carrying forward into films like "Miami Vice") is that when his characters fired their guns, I felt the violence of it in a way that I don't in a lot of other action films. And he manages to make an made an impact while being minimalist instead of operatic.

    • @smurfman691
      @smurfman691 6 лет назад +2

      Zefferwindow
      I agree. Its the sound I think.. The gunshots in his films sound purposely more jarring and violent than in others movies, where you just get used to the noise.

    • @MrSuperkaji
      @MrSuperkaji 6 лет назад +5

      Mann purposefully left the audio for the shootout sequence in Heat raw, rather than editing it in post-production, which is the norm for movies. This is why the shootout sounds so real and punchy.

    Heat really is a movie that you can spend months on end analyzing.
    There are so many things to break down; the use of Los Angeles, the soundtrack choices, the sound design, the supporting cast, there's so much unpack.

      Rossatron, I hear what you're saying. There is also the meeting between Max and the drug kingpin in the restaurant. However, Mann does not rely on suspension of disbelief/plot contrivances as much as other (inferior) directors, so I think we can forgive him this one.
      Your video essays are absolutely superb by the way. I'd be interested in seeing you look at some earlier action films - Bullit, Where Eagles Dare, Dirty Harry, etc.

    Great video Rossatron! Michael Mann's attention to detail makes Heat stand out. I've really grown to appreciate the opening scenes of the movie more than anything. You see one crew, how they operate. And then you see the opposing crew arrive, and how good Vincent is, recognizing how good the other is. You're sold on the movie from this point on. Mann is a genius and Heat is his magnum opus.

  • @TheAbcakl

    It's so neat to have someone actually analyze action films and what makes them good. The genre usually gets dismissed as mind-numbing entertainment, but this video alone can show people that great action is much more. A typical bad action film is when the story is written to accommodate action, while good action films have action to accomodate the story.
    As always: great work, Rossatron!

    Man. It gave me goosebumps. Love Heat. The story. It's characters. Loved the video and the analysis. It is indeed a masterpiece. A one of a kind movie. Filmmaking at it's best. Mann created such an outstanding, near-perfect piece of work.For the real moviegoers, the hard-as-nails fans, it has become a must-see movie. And you certainly hit the spot: it is not an action movie. The way it was built, making the characters fragile, with real life situations at hand, enhances it's importance in movie history. As I said, filmmaking at it's best. There won't be another Heat. There won't be another Mann. Ever.

I had watched countless action scenes and this was the first time I noticed that SOUND makes all the difference. The gun shots were incredibly loud and scary. Most movies the gun shots are muted or over exaggerated. Heat sounds so real that something inside you flinches at the sound. Such a great movie and excellent action scenes.

    What got me into the film was the music. Elliot Goldenthal's score which merges melancholic orchestra and industrial, and the song choices of Terje Rypdal, Lisa Gerrard, Micheal Brook, Passengers(U2/Brian Eno), Moby, and Einsturzende Neubauten give the cold and intense while giving some soft feels. I got the CD for christmas because the album never got a digital release and so far yet to see retailers like LA LA Land and Intrada give this a expanded album treatment to include Elliots unused cues like what the scores for the Matrix Sequels got.

    Heat is simply incredible. It might be extrodinary. My mind blew during the Downtown shootout. Even though it doesn't seem like there is much at the ending, though I guess there is more then I think, I clapped at the end. It's one of those movies I was bored with at times but it was also incredible. Some films to me can be good, or great, or incredible, and I still get bored. Does not mean they aren't good, I think sometimes I need to see them again to keep better track of them, maybe even Heat.

    For those who haven't seen it, check out the original film, L.A. Takedown, the TV version of heat made by Mann years before. Great that you mentioned it.

    I'm always blown away by how good this film looks. It's really confusing because all the actors are over 20 years younger but the film looks like it's only been out a couple of months.

      Strong lighting, shot on film. Do it right and it's ageless.

      Boom! There's a video right there: one where you talk about your view on the whole film vs digital debacle and drop some knowledge on the differences between the two. Admittedly, I'm damn near blind to it myself (that totally isn't why I'm suggesting this or anything...ahem). The Revenant was shot digitally and most people agree that it's one of the most beautiful movies in existence. And David Fincher is currently kicking ass.

    The two heist scenes in this movie are simply the best heist scenes in filmdom. Even better than the heist scene in The Dark Knight (I'm know I'm gonna be attacked by Nolan fanboys after this, but whatever).

    great video!!! i agree with everything you said (with the minor exception that i feel Collateral almost matches Heat as far as Mann's best). Heat has been my fav movie since the first time i saw it.

    For me so much of it was my home town. He uses it unlike any director, Mann does. The light and look. The town- not the ideal. He did it again in 'Colateral.'

    I need to rewatch Heat, I've seen it quite some time ago now and I really didn't why it's so much loved. I guess I'm just weird or something. But yeah I'm somewhat hyped to see it again.

    In the commentary, Michael Mann describes Lt. Hanna as being like a big game hunter. He's on safari, stalking his equally savvy quarry through the urban jungle.

    Don't know if they still do this but the bank shootout scene was shown to Marine recruits as an example of how to retreat while under fire.....which isn't all that surprising given that how the robbers reacted was based on the S.A.S.'s "Response to Enemy Fire" tactic.

    Mann seems like a directors director. Audiences at large don't seem to know him, but he gets mad respect from people in the industry. Ben Affleck, Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder, and Quentin Tarantino have all professed a lot of love for Mann, and in particular hi magnum opus(heat). P.s. if you like heat, check out manhunted, collateral, Miami vice, and black hat:)

    Something that really stuck with me is the use of sound during the heist. Too often in movies the sound of firing guns is bland, not adding anything, while in Heat it truly sounds like the videos of shooting and warfare we see on the news. The loudness and the echo gives a sense of how wide the street outside the screen is and how violent the shooting is in ways the image alone would've never accomplished. It felt real.

    9:00 that 3rd second shot Vincent gave him to the heart was not necessary. Neil dropped his gun by then and was no longer a threat. I think he could have survived the first two shots. Vincent was taking no prisoners.

    Heat is a great film, but imo if you want the best examples of the Michael Mann style then you have to watch Manhunter, Thief, and the Miami Vice series.

      That movie is so weird, and completely unrelated to anything else in his filmography. According to Mann he has no plans on fixing it. What a prime movie for to remake though, interesting concept and as long as it's decent it'll automatically be better than the original.

    the aussies made that cover and move tactic used after the heist from nam but both british and aussie sas really developed it and british sas taught the actors how to do it.
