As an American I have definitely missed out on hearing about British scandals. Today I am very interested in learning about massive British scandals that most Americans do not know about. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!
The thing is Tyler, it ruined peoples lives. Some even committed suicide because of this! The post office and the government have NEVER apologised and these people are still suffering today! It was disgraceful, correction it is STILL a disgrace!
PS I know it's in no way recent, but it was/is still a huge scandal.......You might want to look at The Profumo Affair!
Just saw there’s a dramatization of it coming on bbc very soon. So use your VPN Americans 😅
@@scarbanot heard about the BBC one, but ITV Fillmed "Mr Bates vs The Post Office" around the corner from me at his former post office in Craig Y Don.
Not sure when it's due for release.
@@Rachel_M_ oh my mistake, itv, and I think it’s on next week, was advertised yesterday as coming soon
Well I came to this late, rather profetic
Track and trace was nothing to do with the NHS. The government did it and blamed the NHS, who had no involvement.
It also didnt cost 37billion. It was social media sharing a headline and not reading the details
I was a debt adviser and had a client, an elderly lady in her 70’s, a former post office post mistress who was sacked, faced criminal prosecution and faced losing her home too - anyone looking at this could see it was just wrong and was clearly a coverup. She said she was aware of at least 20 others at the time all having the same accusations. Awful awful stuff and those involved in hiding this should be locked up
LMAO, the way you pronounce "Mauritius" incorrectly.
He's American. Their geography is appalling
How did Savile not come up!? After the video about British insults and 'yer dad still writes to Jim'll fix it', I was waiting with baited breath to see a reaction to why that insult is actually so savage😅
It is because the thread is about scandals that are not generally known in the UK. The Savile scandal is very known and therefore does not belong in the thread.
@@s.b.907 Good point, I was genuinely surprised the story hadn't made it over to America tbh
Bated breath,as in Abated.
@crocsmart5115 as in really eager
I thought the same about the Rotherham sex abuse ring which turned out to be bigger and far reaching. Those poor girls who spoke up but were ignored or not believed, but also to not listen to health care professionals that flag an issue, just unbelievable.
Sub post masters are the people employed to run the local post office (of which there are thousands in the UK). Some take a lot of money on a weekly basis as they not only let you post parcels but have a renewal service of passports and driving licenses. They are also a bank. Many of these sub postmasters were accused of stealing 10's of thousands of pounds due to the computer saying there was a shortfall. Many were pillars of local communities which made things even worse.
The Post Office bug was horrible, and should have had more experts working on it. If you look at an Excel spreadsheet (which I've done many times), it only takes one sticky key to turn 100 to a 1000, or 1000 to 10000. You physically can't launder money that isn't there, the system had a glitch. The Post Office and Government never really apologised, we got a half hearted one, but too little too late. People were literally killing themselves over the fiasco because their names had been tarnished to the point, they'd never get their reputation back.
Please folks do not bother telling Tyler anything as he never reads, reples to or even acknowledges he has had comments as he completely ignores them.
I read the comnents to converse with other commentors like in a group chat kind of a way.
Same here. How's the weather down your end?
The Post Office scandal was effectively an accounting /software issue. Sub postmasters could not balance their books at the end of each day and could not understand why . The problem lay with Fujitsu's program, Horizon . Fujitsu were aware of the problem but covered it up and was content to see hundreds of innocent people convicted of theft rather than speak up. The personal tragedy is enormous with some committing suicide rather than live with the 'shame'in their towns/villages .
Phillip Schofield is pronounced _Skofield_.
He said, his relationship with the young man was "unwise but not illegal"...& That his relationship with his brother was that he "no longer has a brother" following his conviction.
No. You've misunderstood the track and trace thing. The conspiracy theory says the app cost that 37 billion, whereas the app cost was actually 35 million. The 37 billion was the budget allocated for track and trace across two years, but only about 2/3rds of it was used. The money given out to politicians' friends for PPE that either never apeared or was faulty is a far bigger scandal.
The worst thing about the post office is when they were accusing people they would send in mentors to watch their practices and those people would see money just disappearing from the systems and know that the post masters were not stealing but they still accused them anyway. Apart from the prosecutions the money had to be paid back people were paying 10s of thousands out of their own savings
On a lighter note, as we are now in advent, have you discovered/reacted to Pantomime? As we are now in Pantomime season! It’s a fantastic British tradition!
It's not funny Tyler, people's lives were ruined, people went to prison, committed suicide, had their children taken into care, the compensation process is still ongoing,
I think one that might be coming down the track is HS2.
The Post Office is still owned by the UK government. it's separate from Royal Mail. Post Office runs offices open to the public, Royal Mail delivers letters and parcels etc.
@@brianbrotherston5940 International Distributions Services is on the LSE but that's Royal Mail, not Post Office.
I'm surprised Windrush didn't make the list.
One that only caught on by the media recently but is huge and has been going on for about 15 years is the HS2 fiasco. I'm no expert on this but the premise of HS2 was to build a new, modern rail line connecting the north and south of England because it is true that our country is in dire need of some more modern infrastructure. The problem seemed to stem from the inability to deliver on the complex engineering that was promised and the spiralling costs that overran by billions funded by public money. Not only that but over the years many people had their homes forcibly repossessed by the firms planning to build this to make way for the planned train line and were paid way, way less than their homes were worth. And then in 2023 everyone found out the extent of the financial black hole ever growing and the HS2 plan was put on indefinite hold, so it won't even be built. As far as I know only a smaller east to west portion in northern England will go ahead. Once again, no one at the top seems to have been held accountable. Billions up in smoke.
I actually remember seeing one of the whistle-blowers (no pun intended) in charge of approaching people to buy their homes go on the news and reveal the fact his bosses told him to undervalue people's homes by a massive amount, which he felt uncomfortable doing as was unethical and when he told his boss his concerns they said do it or you're sacked. Disgusting.
I listened to a hour long interview on Times Radio with the reporter who spoke to the whistleblowers. Quite detailed if you have time
The Post Office scandal makes me so angry. The initial problem was not that the software was faulty, but that the so-called investigators knew little about investigating, presumed that the sub-postmasters were guilty, and thought that it was proper to behave like overgrown prefects.Higher officials then spent years, and heaps of public money, in denying the facts. Then again, the high officials at the Post Office were only behaving like the government in relation to the HIV-infected blood scandal: What can we expect of the P.O. when the government is incapable of acting in a straightforward manner?
Tyler
The Post Office scandal really was the worst because it affected the lives of so many honest, hard working ordinary people who had worked for the post office for years in some cases. The Post Office just would not admit that the cases could be linked and never reported it as a collective problem. Intead they went after the little people and ruined lives. There is a drama due to start on TV here all about it with one of the best collective casts i have seen for a very long time so I will be glued to it.
missed one of the most important one , the infected blood scandal
The post office do not deliver mail in UK, only provide you with the stamps to go on them. The mail and packages are delivered by Royal Mail (also no longer goverment owned).
As for Schofield, the comment about 'grooming' is irrelevant as the notion of 'grooming' appears in law relating to offences against under-age people, not making advances to adults. Schofield's relationship with the younger man was not illegal but the public and newspapers always want to inflate things in order to sell papers.
I’m surprised no one brought up the so called “Windrush Scandal”
That article is wrong . To quote the House Of Commons Library :- "The Post Office is owned by the government, through the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and UK GovernmentInvestments (UKGI), however, the Post Office Ltd Board has responsibility forthe operations of the Post Office. "
This had nothing to do with the actual delivery network, but the Post Office retail sector which sold stamps, issued pensions, dealt with foreign currency , sold insurance and a host of other business.
At the moment there is an ongoing public enquiry looking at this scandel.
Biggest misses:
Jimmy Saville,
Hillsborough,
RaaC,
Dominic Cummings trip to Barnard Castle,
Boris Johnson (just everything he ever did before ans during political career),
Tonypandy,
The Battle of the he Beanfield,
Harold Shipman,
Thatcher's Milk Snatching,
Mark Thatchers Arms deals,
Cash for Questions,
MP Expenses Scandal....
I'm sure there's more but id have to have a think about it these are just the ones off the top of my head
The Post Office Scandal really doesn't seem to be as well known and talked about as it should be.
The original issue was that the new computer system made accounting errors which were attributed to the local Post Office Managers fiddling their books, and they therefore lost their jobs, their reputations, and in some cases their homes, and 39 of them went to gaol.
The blame has to be shared between the programmers who developed the sytem, and the Post Office for not investigating accepting the truth - even when the scale was becoming apparent. One or two employees might be corrupt - but not hundreds!.
Post office scandal. I’ve never heard of it and I’m British (English), and I’m old enough to have heard about it. Wft
The horse meat scandal is one i remember the most, that and the post office one.
I think what was worse than hidden horse meat was that sometimes pork was labeled as beef or lamb. For some religious groups this is more serious.
Phillip scofield has had a few scandals leading up to that incident that annoyed everyone in Britain 😅 he was accused for jumping the queue at the Queen's funeral (and of course you know how much you should never queue jump in England 😅) loads of really famous people, including people like David Beckham, spent hours queuing with everyone else. It was the beginning of the end of his career 😬
ITV Drama starts in January on the Post Office scandal.
"Mr Bates vs The Post Office"
The post office scandal is appalling. Especially after they realised there was a bug in the computerised system but still went after the post masters for the ‘debt’.
Utterly shameful.
Chagos Archipelago. British Indian Ocean Territory
The software bug was mentioned in Computer Weekly early on in the scandal..... but justice took a long time. Incidentally my brother-in-law's dad was a director at ICL at that time!
Another famous and expensive software scandal was the Air Traffic Control system that took many years to iron out all the bugs...
The track and trace scandal was mainly that the contract was given to "mates of the government" even though they knew nothing about software or creating apps and were suspected of "taking backhanders"
Some older scandals are 1) The Christine Keeler/John Profumo affair 2) Lord Lucan disappearance 3) John Stonehouse disappearance
A new one (where I knew a few people) involved is the A4e scandal where a few people went to prison although the founder "Got away with it"
Why are you laughing, Tyler?
It's so shameful. We have several massive British scandals. All these victims of the Post Office - about 700 of them - need at least £1 million each in compensation, and some people need to be in jail. However, they are still walking around. Some of the victims have since died, without compensation. The BBC have done a good exposee of it, if you can listen to it - it is hard listening, you will have to take extra blood-pressure tablets.
The Post Office is run (and was then) by multiple small business owners who carry out post office operations, hand the money over to the Post Office, and get paid a percentage of each transaction. It's been that way for over a century, and still is - effectively (sort of) a franchise. They're called sub post offices. (Incidentally, the Post Office and the Royal Mail are not the same thing, and they were both privatised (a big mistake, imo).)
The Post Office unrolled a new computer system, that had a fundamental flaw. But rather than believe that there could be an issue with the computers, the PO chose to believe that hundreds of time-served postmasters up and down the country chose to suddenly and simultaneously commit fraud / theft. And then they doubled down by covering it up for years.
People lost their livelihoods, people went to jail (since released, when the scandal was revealed), lives were destroyed. As yet, nobody from the Post Office has faced any major repurcussions, so far as I know. Or actually, even apologised, let alone paid the millions in compensation that by rights, they should be.
Love it when you do this.
A current scandal is the HS2 rail line. It's cost £billions, and will run from just outside Birmingham to about 5 miles away from London.
We love royal snail 🐌 slow and steady wins the race🇬🇧
Jimmy Saville. Not a shock to most.....
I'm surprised Gary Glitter or Jimmy Saville (aka Jim'il fix it) never came up. Especially since its been referenced so many times and Tyler was able to catch the references in previous videos
Sounds like the British post office contracted out their computer programming to Horizon, which did not work properly. Instead of coming clean - or switching to a new computer program, they stuck with the faulty one. This happened under the Tories. Labour stopped using the program, but the damage was already done, and they did not wish to deal with the ramifications either..
Undercover police getting into relationships - that happened in the States as well.
The Canadian Covid app did not work either - they contracted it to two people with Gov ties who contracted it to someone else to design the program. Big complaint was people having to hunker down for 10 days who had not tested positive.
wasn't tony blair and labour cabinet prime minister in 1999 though.
Are you saying Mauritius ( maurishis)?
Mortgage does mean “Dead Pledge”
And what about the cop that went around and scared a girl with false stories to go with him, and then he raped and killed her afterwards. That's cold and it damaged the trust in police so bad that the police had to go on the telly and say, if you feel scared when meeting a cop you can run to safety. How do the cops even deal with that today ?
Look up Party gate. the Prime Minister at the time was partying during Covid lockdowns
Cold cure volunteer gets nerve gassed in demonstration for govt. officials is a good one. Poll tax, Nuclear power plant next to pleasure beach, How Brexit was handled, the Covid fiascoes ( there are so many in that one topic alone!) Jeremy Thorpe, There are thousands!
Well just as your talking about post office scandal .. a promo video ITV a main uk tv channel has put a video out on youtube of a Drama coming soon called Mr Bates vs The Post Office
The Post Office scandal is not a laughing matter. Fujitsu designed the horizon system but nobody will own up to it
The post office had 2 parts. The delivery of post and parcels but also a front end for the government to provide services (such as paying pensions).
The delivery of post is Royal Mail and is still government owned.
The freddo scandal. Fucking extortionate, from 5p to 35p
Hillsborough
It's only 4% interest rate for home loans ATM in Australia, back in the '80's it was 18%
A new 4 part series is been made about the post office scandal called “Mr Bates vs the Post Office” it will be shown on itv 1 in the uk, this will definitely be worth a watch.
I can't believe Jimmy Saville isn't on this and the henious cover up. Most of these pale in comparison.
Profumo 1963.
You will see clips of Schofield in your next posted video about British foods. Philip and Holly invite chefs to cook live on their show, then try the food
It's a shame you didn't Google British Scandals. We have so many x
hey man, has anyone ever told you, you look a LOT like ian somerhalder? :P
Philip Schofield was married to a woman but was dating men as young as 18 and 19 in secret and recently there are reports of him flirting with underaged boys on social media sites and even snapchat so that to me is scandelous
I bet you won't be heading into a British post office any time soon 😂
The Post Office workers were convicted.
BSE scandal was pretty bad
So sad!!!!
It was the wife and his friend I think definitely Britain you might as well do what I do rent then you can leave quicker if you get bored 😂😂. You use the word crazy a lot don't you😂😂
Philip Schofield used his position to control his younger male victim.
victim 😂
Not according to the young man.
Wow not even I knew this about his brother 😮 or the police thing and I'm English be for covid
it was run by a canadian woman called moira greene she took large bonus's & legged it when the excrement hit the fan.
The whole Scottish parliment and the crule thing i did to mess with a freak of a SMP he was extreamly Gulable and i could not help myself, he lost his seat i may have a we hand in that.
The police officer has never acknowledged the kid, he was actually married with kids. I think the women took him to court in the end.
I bet you don't feel quite so bad about some of the shenanigans going on in your own country after watching the shit that goes on in other countries.
I love that he is shocked that the British kicked a bunch of islanders of an island but that feels like a footnote at best.
936th
It's pronounced 'Sko-field'.
Our police are very friendly 😂
It was the Chago Islands. The Brits moved the population off Diego Garcia island to make a USA military base. The UK have now been ordered to hand the island back over to its indigenous people.
Slso, look up the Profumo Affair during McMillans administration in the 60s concerning Christine Keeler.
Our post office (equivalent to US Mail) is now a private company - possibly encouraged by the scandals under the former government control.
These days, when I go in just to buy a postage stamp, they want to sell me insurance, foreign currency, they even ask me if I want to invest in their post office bank.!!
And all I wanted was a dollar stamp to send a letter.😊!
Royal Mail has been privitased but the Post Office is a limited company owned wholly by the government in the UK.
Post Office Ltd became independent of Royal Mail Group in 2012
Royal Mail got sold off but the Post Office did not
