  • I borrowed a trek Fuel EX 8 29er and took it for a spin - gave you a brief review of how I felt it rode for my first time. Hope you enjoy this Trek Fuel EX 8 review. Please give this video a thumbs up if you want to see me make more biking videos. Especially if you want me to invest in a go pro video camera! Thanks.

While out of town this weekend, I rented a Fuel EX 7 from the local bike shop and took it on some fairly challenging trails. I was blown away by how stable yet agile this bike is! Such great value for money. Climbs like a goat and very confidence inspiring on the descents. I am now seriously considering buying a Fuel EX.

Bit of a bummer when a review video doesn't have ride footage, but I understand. The perspective and feed back from the rider is more important! Thanks for showcasing the bike.

Great review! Love that Fuel ex! Safe riding...think I will go with a 17.5" Fuel EX to compliment my Trek Superfly Carbon 9.7! All the best!

My 6th day old 18 fuel ex8 is in the shop with a bad hub :(, crank is growling (probably didn't grease it from the factory). Front rim clicked, dropper post sagged but I adjusted it and now it's good. All in less than a week. love medium setting for down and up.

Hi, Great Review... Wanted to ask you a question... i sit perfectly between 18.5 and 19.5 frame sizes. Without an further info, would yo recommend me to go larger or smaller ¿? Best Regards!

Marcel Marchant I would go with a smaller one for jumps and stuff but it totally depends on what you're riding

I did too but went with 18.5 6.0 ft

Do you think this would be overkill for short, flowy, hilly terrain? I am coming off a Mojo SL (26), and the trails I ride aren't nearly as wide open as what I'm seeing on this video. Compact, maybe 40-60 metres elevation, on average. I can't get the 27.5 Plus in Korea, so I'm debating between this and the Remedy.

The dilemma: the Rocky Mountain brand, like me, is Canadian (although I suspect mostly Chinese and Japanese parts and assembly), BUT my buddy is a Trek dealer here. I need him to add to his dealer rep, so my business stays with him, unless someone's selling a used Rocky. I wonder what's "way better" about them, though. It really sucks that Trek don't export the Fuel in 27.5 here. I just don't think the 29'er makes sense on these trails. Do you think the Remedy would be a poor climber, or just so-so?

canadianroot I have the 2017 remedy 9.8. I live in Utah where most rides require at least 1000 feet of climbing. I have never felt held back by my remedies climbing ability. I road the 2017 fuel ex 9.8 and honestly didn't notice too much difference climbing. That being said if your trails aren't that rough I would go for the fuel. 150mm of travel is allot to carry around of you aren't using it. They have really gotten 29ers figured out now when it comes to agility. I had the 2016 fuel ex with 29 inch wheels and really liked it. Only switched to the remedy because I wanted something I could ride on rockier trails with bigger jumps. That and the 27.5 are just more playful in general.

Thanks a lot, Mike. That's good info. Is your Remedy a 29er? For 2018, it's 27.5 only, as you probably know. My Mojo had 150 Marzocchi Bomber forks on it, and it felt good. A bit better than the Fox 140 Talas I had previously (not new). Because the trails I ride don't require super long climbs as you've mentioned (1000 feet).....not even close to that, actually (we often have to do hike-a-bike for long intervals when doing "regular" downhill). What I ride is usually no more than 100 or so metre elevation. Lots of tight, rolling forest hills, with twists and turns, some roots and rocks.

Would going from 150 to 160 make much of a difference? The deal here in Korea is that it's not always easy to get demos. My LBS, who is a good friend, managed to arrange a demo through the importer, but the frame (17.5) will undoubtedly be a bit too small. According to Trek's sizing chart (rather basic....its chart simply lists rider height) I should be 18.5 or 19.5. Will advise once I've ridden it. I'm stoked.

Hey Al, I did the demo, and I was impressed by certain things, but probably not enough to make the switch to 29. Too bad the frame was a bit small, but I wonder how much more of a truck it would have felt like. I just don't think the trails here suit it as much as what you rode in the video. I did like the rollover, no question. It took log and beam stairs well (we have plenty of those), and tree roots and rocks, not an issue. I felt like the front end handling was imprecise, though. I couldn't turn as well as I'd have liked. If the Remedy came stock with a travel adjust fork, that would be perfect. 160 would be great for most manner of riding but dropping down would be a godsend on tougher climbs. I'm about 5' 10.5" and about 220 pounds (we weigh in kilos....and I'm 102, but that should go down as the winter fat melts off).

Hi, can you please give us your height and weight? I'm 5'9 and weigh 158lbs. I think the 18.5 size would fit better for me. Thanks

I am just shy if 5’8” with 29” inside leg. Would the 17.5 be ok for me?

I'd say like myself you're solidly in the 15.5" range.
