This is a good channel but I'm shaking my head a little on this one. I'm sure Head & Shoulder's research is valid and either builds on or is validated by other peer-reviewed studies, but I would have liked to hear even one sentence from him confirming that. Without discussing the level of scientific consensus, this video reeks of paid promotion. Credibility is easier to lose than it is to gain, just sayin'.
Head and shoulders really doesn't work for dandruff like they claim lol. 72 hours dandruff free? It doesn't do anything for me. What actually works is schampoo containing ketoconazole.
Like many, have had dandruff all my life. Went to a dermatologist for some similar flaking and irritation on parts of my face, and she diagnosed the whole kit n kaboodle as seborrheic dermatitis caused by this yeast, and gave me a prescription strength ketoconazole shampoo to use on my head and skin twice a week. 1 week later, my skin is cleared up, and I haven't seen a flake of dandruff in the last 2 months of using it. Update, 1 Month Later: Stopped using the antifungal shampoo about 3-4 weeks ago, and still haven't seen any recurrence of dandruff. Still keep the shampoo on hand for whenever/if ever it starts to come back.
I have pretty bad dandruff and I get a lot of flaking around my nose too... never thought it was bad enough to go to a dermatologist though. My dad has psoriasis so I could have inherited a skin condition from him.
@@sharul1709 Ah yes. The manager "scientist" at Head and Shoulders put fungicide on hair. Fungus died. Body no longer irritated. Unless you stop using said fungicide on hair. Then everybody walk the dinosaur.
Yeah. I watched the movie "Evolution" couple weeks ago and I just realised that at the end of the movie they were using Head & Shoulders to attack the aliens. lol
There are so many causes, it really depends on each person. Some people just have dry skin and either need to stop washing their head as often or use a moisturizer. Other people have bacteria problems and need medicated shampoos like head&shoulder, a tea tree oil one, or something like sulfate shampoo. There's also very specific medical conditions like psoriasis on the scalp which means it'll never go away, you can only reduce it with medication.
I've had dandruff for as long as I've known. As a kid, my mum used to put Head and Shoulders to try and get rid of it. I used H&S for 2 decades and I'm sorry but it never did anything to reduce the dandruff that I had. Someone introduced me to Neutrogena T-Gel - wow what a difference. While it didnt get rid of it permanently, I could go like a week before it started to show again. So I just had to use it like every 6-8 days to keep it at bay. I still keep using it now and will continue to do so.
Hey, i just wanted to know what kinda of Neutrogena T-Gel are u using cause there is a couple also is it a shampo or pre or a gel could use some help i have tried H&S and just like u nothing, also ur a man right ?
@@Mentat13 yeah. And I bet you're right. If you stop using, it might come back. I have the dandruff problem and noticed the Zinc shampoo and the tea tree oil work after about 2 or 3 uses but then they also stop working if I stop using them. Brand doesn't really matter as long as the same ingredients are in there
I know right, If all adverts were as open and as honest as this with regards to their methods and their goals it would maybe result in some advances in science... Unfortunately the average veritasium viewer is not the average person, so of course shock news and shitty exploitive adverts will always succeed
I'm concerned with head & shoulders approach to curing dandruff. Their solution is to just obliterate the microbiome that exists on your scalp. but I think given all the research we've seen on how a healthy microbiome in the gut can cause dramatic changes in digestion and overall health, it would probably be wise to re-evaluate our thought process towards skincare. What if there's a way to have pro-biotic soaps that select for a type of fungus that doesn't inflame our scalps? I think there is a lot of potential for research in how maintaining a healthy microbial community on your body is a more effective way to stay healthy than to destroy the microbes completely.
I still use Head and Shoulders and still have issues with dandruff if I forget, or ignore using it. I was thinking the same way as you on this issue. Fight smarter than fight harder.
No money in curing as a matter of fact they r making u have dandruff everything that has hair doesn't wash it with products everyday we didnt always either till about 80years ago
A big difference in scalp and the guts it the layer of skin. Skin is a layer of dead cells and to affect the mother skin cells you have to penetrate a bit. In the other hand guts has the mucosa and beneath is the gut and that's it you can damage yourself so easy... well not that easy but with beta adrenergicos and especific drugs that are common. Still I think washing your hair less often it's the better choice than killing all the bacteria cause maybe it will grow stronger like the flu uwu. English it's not my 1st language and it's kinda late. If I sound kinda rude it's not my intention and I'm sorry and let me read what you think about my comment
Do you realize they expose the information in a way that can be misinterpreted and doesn't help that much? They're actually getting your scalp addicted to their shampoo brand.
But they never told you what chemicals they are putting in Head and Shoulders and how those chemicals can damage your skin and cause side effects .... all they said is it will not let those fungus things grow on your scalp, but at what cost? damaging your hair roots and hair...
@@memd777 not to defend an advertisement here but they did mention specific chemicals in the video, just not in what proportion they use, or their side effects.
This doesn't deny the fact that head and shoulders formula exaserbates dandruff and makes you dependant on their product by only temporarily releiving the problem.
@@professorx3060 topical cream and a bandaid isn't a solution to eczema. It's a coping mechanism. Head and shoulders doesn't contribute to solving the problem. It only exaserbates its.
@@DeathmetalPersian head and shoulders doesn’t even work for me. I still have tons of dandruff even after washing it twice a night. It’s not even a bandaid for me lmfao.
@@yesimbigwes I was the same way. I switched to a high moisturizer shampoo and high moisturizer conditioner and that basically cured me. I was told that if that didn't work to try a leave in high moisturizer conditioner too. But I didn't even end up needing it after I switched.
That's exactly what it is. It's fantastic. It gives me information that I can use to do my own real fact checking if I wanna know if its worth it to retain that information. It also gets me thinking about new ideas and concepts that I hadn't considered.
It's still informative. I just checked, and the generic shampoo I use still has zinc pyrithione, which is listed at 6:56 - therefore, it's not like you have to use Head and Shoulders to benefit from the information in the video.
For me head and shoulders made no difference, either good or bad. The only one that works for me is Vichy's Dercos. Too bad it's three times more expensive than the others.
I switched to a selenium/zinc product and that worked amazingly. Now I think I could actually stop buying the stuff since my gene expression has probably changed for good.
I used head & shoulders for 10 years and it really helped me get rid of dandruff. Or so I thought, one day I was told by my hairdresser that the reason I was getting dandruff was because my head was used to head & shoulders. And maybe I didn't actually have dandruff. So I stopped using it and at first the dandruff came back and my head was itching like crazy but after a couple of months, no dandruff and no itching. Now I use quality shampoo recommended by my hairdresser but I use it much less. Only once maybe every 2-3 weeks. My hair is doing great. Feels like these corporations make us addicted to their products. Or at least make you think that you have a problem with your hair while you might not really have one. I think your hair can do fine naturally. At least it worked for me. Try it out 👍
I will give it a try. I am also addicted to head and shoulders. I can't live without it. It's becoming really in expensive in my country. south africa. it basically double in priced recently. I really want to give it up because it's becoming unaffordable
Where do you live? I've been "researching" no shampoo method for months and gave I t a try, but it wasn't functioning because the water in my area is too hard, so I can not wash my hair properly only with water - it does nothing, grease stays on my head, making it look awful
While I appreciate the science behind this video, I wish that you would have included an opposition view point. Such as those who believe that the reason we have the bacteria in the first place is due to the continual stripping of the oils from our scalp. This is essentially a giant ad for a product that may be causing the issue in the first place.
Ive read so much on both viewpoints and my anecdotal conclusion is that life is better with head and shoulders, and theres less dandruff when using head and shoulders. But i also thought this was a just a big ad too
Dunno about other people, but I used to have bad dandruff, even if I used "anti dandruff" shampoo. I stopped washing my hair with shampoo so much (previously every day or so) and BAM, no dandruff. Now I shampoo my hair once every couple weeks, and other times when I have a shower I just scrub my hair with hot water. I get great lift off my hair too from natural oils too.
Oof. I get it worse the longer I don't shampoo. Shampoo every day- bam, perfect scalp, hair is great, etc. But I do use shampoo and conditioner. People seem to skip the conditioner part and complain their hair is excessively dry. No wonder...
@@Olivia-W it takes a couple months getting used to and it gets real itchy in the beginning , but it's worth it, because then you've teached your scalp not to overproduce oils
@@Liquoricilicious About 2 months. Life didn't allow me to go longer. It didn't get better at all. Hair got damaged and skin flaky, especially near the end. My head just feels so much better shampooing/conditioning. I do have particular favorite ones and don't tolerate some very well. Regular ones in shops around here are murder on my hair. I don't use any other hair products, never style it or anything. I think it might depend on hair type? I have really thin, straight, dark blonde hair, and naturally a ball of drippy grease. Conditioner is a must
Hair is what keeps the scalp moist and warm thus making it idle for the bacteria.. if you remove hair it would not be a breeding ground so no bacteria.. no dandruff!!
I went to get my haircut and the barber asked me what kind of shampoo I use. My reply was head and shoulders. He said why do you use head and shoulders and I said because I get dandruff. He said you have no dandruff and you should quit using head and shoulders. I told him the reason I don’t have any dandruff is because I use head and shoulders. 🙄
@@chuck-norris To sell him something else. Common for barbers/hairdressers to sell specialized (very expensive) products here in USA. Don't know if this is done elsewhere.
Show me some petri dishes with regular shampoo in the center. I'm sure there's a whole host of things in all shampoos that bacteria don't like. It's also interesting that when they were showing the gene signatures, the said "after 3 weeks of H&S, you see a difference" what about 3 weeks of treatment with other shampoos? Wording and comparisons are important here.
They don’t have to show different shampoos. The main point of the video is to show why people have dandruff. Of course the video is going to show H&S bragging about their product, but at the same time, they listed out chemicals that help relieve dandruff, so if you want to try out other shampoos that have those ingredients, you are more than welcome to do so.
I used head and shoulders anti dandruff for years and my dandruff was still really bad, I now use a different shampoo given to me by my Dr but this actually does work. I'm sure head and shoulders does work for some people, but for me it didn't at all
It's too generic and too cheap and harsh. It has SLS and SLES, harsh detergents. They destroy your skin barrier, overdry and cause your body to compensate with more oil. So you'll get dandruff if you dont repeat again soon. Too many cleansers in the world are too harsh for most people. Companies are out of control with it.
same. Head and shoulders just made my scalp hurt for a few hours and didnt seem to make any difference. Funnily enough, i have a buzzcut now and its the one time ive noticed a huge difference even with just using normal budget shampoo. Idk why, it must be how my scalps more aired out/easier to clean more intensely or something, but clearly it works
(Just thinking out loud here) it seems to me that the Head and Shoulders solution, while effective, doesn't address the root cause of dandruff which is caused by one's own immune system unnecessarily freaking out at the byproducts caused by Malassezia. If our immune system is primarily driven by our genetics, maybe there could be a gene therapy developed to address this. (Crispr, anyone?) Targeting and/or disrupting the natural Malassezia on the skin could cause other issues by disrupting the balance of skin flora.
@@MmoviesE yes but the permanent solution would cost a consumer a lot of money up front which most people probably can't afford so buying a cheaper temporary solution up front is more accessible to more people although it probably costs more in the long run, similar to leasing a car
That would require a whole ton of research, and probably not fixable with just crispr. Gene therapy is used for single gene defects mostly, but in this case, a whole bunch of genes probably play a role, which would all have to be edited. This is also not possible as you would have to infect every immune cell in the body to give them the cirspr system. The only option to modify the genes in every cell, is to do it in an embryo and then letting it develop to a human so you only have to change one cell. however ethics are not developed in this field so it would never be accepted to do so. TLDR: Not possible
A company making a living with selling stuff to people who "suffer" from dandruff are the wrong people to ask for how to make it go away, in my opinion :)
@Singularity if you cure someone of their dandruff they won't buy your anti-dandruff product ever again thus you lose a customer so you want to make it go away but not forever so they will come back
@Singularity He didn't get it quite right. It's more like this: Corporations that produce anti-dandruff products are incentivized to make it appear as though their products are helping you, while actually exacerbating the problem so that you have an incentive to continue buying the product. For many people proper daily exfoliation is the only thing necessary to get rid of dandruff. Chemicals that dry the scalp and strip away naturally occurring oils only make the problem of dandruff worse in the long run. That's my theory, anyways. I shampoo once or twice a month and my scalp has never been less itchy. But also: different strokes for different folks. I'm not a dermatologist, so take all that with a grain of...uhhh... dandruff?
@Singularity Every source I've found has recommended exfoliation as a solution to dandruff. It's pretty intuitive: Dandruff is dead skin. Exfoliation is the process of using a coarse surface to remove dead skin.
Wow. Normally after a sponsored video based off the sponsor like this, I don't feel inclined to buy their product, but this time, I'm impressed! Learning about the science and research behind this surprises me, I might be inclined to give them a shot!
Personal experience: it works as a great fix for dandruff but I wouldn't reccomend using only their product. It doesnt work amazing as shampoo but it works great as an anti-dandruff
@@mikaelkorpela of course that came into consideration, but even so, showing what they did in this video and how, that's much more effort and clarity put into an ad than is common by far.

I used Head and shoulders for long while, sadly it never helped, sometimes it caused even more inflammatory actions. What helped was changing food pattern and not using shampoo with micro plastics.
gotta agree with you smackachicken, there is stuff that works and there is stuff to keep it from not happening.. especially when it comes to beardruff..
problem with head n shoulders and similar shampoo is when you stop using it you explode in itchiness and dandruff. Plus the shampoo itself contains sulfates which removes fat from your skin, which could make the problem worse if you already have dry skin.
And your scalp and skin in general has already a fantastic structure that lets it breathe without drying out. Ur basically removing the natural skin barrier too, which will then build up faster and thicker because you're removing it all the time.
I suffered with dandruff and ciriosis on my head for years. Doctors just kept getting me to buy expensive shampoos. Then I read somewhere that humans don't actually need to wash their hair. So I stopped washing with shampoo. Just wash it with water now. It wasnt particularly nice for the first couple of weeks. I'm now about 6 months in, my ciriosis have been cured, I have nearly zero dandruff and have no itching at all. Looks clean doesn't go greasy at all
I have the same, used head and shoulders a lot of years but if I stopped one day then it would come back really bad. Now I just wash it with water and once a week or so with special shampoo, now it's much better ^^
Scalp Psoriasis can also come and go based on humidity and temperature. For example, during the winters in central Nevada the air is very dry and cold. My Psoriasis can really flare up. During the summers my scalp stay more moist because sweat and oils. But your right, just rinsing the dirt out is all you really need to do. Also showering every single day is bad for your skin. Sure shower off if you've been doing lots physical dirty work, but if you work in a job that's not that physical, a simple hand washing and a hot wet cloth in the pits and crotch is all you need.

I'm not sure how I feel about sponsored advertising like this. If they make it monetarily feasable for creators like Derek to make good, informative and scientifically sound content then I am all for it. And I do trust Derek to be able to present this information in an unbiased way. I do still worry about information being omitted, and I am not a big fan of industry-sponsored science.
But there are ways to confirm science even if it is done for profit... Most advancements in engineering and medicine are done by corporations. Nothing wrong with it as long as there are ways to detect altered/manipulated studies.

@@Vasses935 It has good content for sure, but for me, good content is diminished when it's mixed with product promotion. When product promotion shows up, I stop the video, click dislike, and move on. Yes I realize this is free for me to watch -- I'm not complaining -- just disagreeing.
Vasses935 you have no idea if it was actually informative. They are a commercial company, they research to make products kind of better but mainly and usually twist the result to sound super positive.
I wish more companies would tell us the science behind their products. Don't simply tell us it works. Show us the underlying mechanisms of how your product works.
The problem with that is that then people will call them liars, or as some say it's "alternative facts". I would personally love to see the science, but I also want it to be an independent source that doesn't care about money at all. That means it has to call bullcrap when it sees it, and has to be Socialized, and people don't seem to trust that. See EPA, FDA, PETA, universities, and many other organizations, companies, and programs. How can you beat humans that naturally don't want authority, yet do want authority telling them what to do?
“Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.” -George Carlin I'm using this quote not to say that people are stupid, but most people are highly specialized in their fields. We know enough about one thing to do it, and much less about everything else. If I'm a particle physicist, I really don't care about Malassezia fungus or specific details about skin pathology. If I'm a truck driver, same applies. I just want a soapy paste to clean my head with.
Frankly speaking, I already had a bad inkling after reading the title and hearing the sponsor name in the first minute. Around 2:07, when he said he visited H&S lab and the blatant repeating of this product names confirmed my suspicions that the rest of the video might sound more like an ads, and it didn't disappoint, or rather, the way this video was presented disappointed me since this ad-style just didn't fit the usual tone and style of Veritasium video.
Would you trust a tobacco company to tell you the science of smoking? H&S job is to sell the most shampoo possible, and I wouldn't be shocked if it's not as straight forward as they make it seem in the video. After all, if the goal is to reduce dandruff, the outcome measured should be the amount of dandruff, not a gene expression that might be related and a fungus we think may be involved but lives on everyone's scalp regardless. Their estimate of 50% of people having dandruff is likely inflated by stretching the definition because the dead skin has to come of at some point. Tobacco companies would also talk about seemingly related facts that work in their favor, like "no throat irritation in those that took their 30 day challenge," and this fungus science sounds like the crafted side discussion that's designed to sell instead of a randomized consumer test that compares no shampoo use to various shampoos with measured amount of daily dandruff along with other factors. Was the active ingredient in the shampoo even mentioned? The product may work and be great, but whenever the facts are coming from a company they need to be approached with skepticism. A company isn't going to spend time and money on research and educating people unless it makes them money back in some way. They'll never sell you a cure for dandruff you take once, but they will sell you a temporary solution you have to use every day.
I used to get dandruff quite regularly, esp. in winter. In the past I've used various anti-dandruff shampoos inc. H&S as well as coal tar shampoo. About 2 yrs ago, I decided as an experiment to stop using shampoo/conditioner and simply wash my hair with warm water and a fine toothed comb. The first month wasn't the best as my sebum levels went a bit crazy, but that all settled and my hair is now neither overly dry or oily nor have I had any dandruff since. Sure, it's a single sample and not something cosmetics companies would want popularised. But, considering shampoo is simply glorified detergent, it's no wonder that it is possibly also responsible for scalp irritation. In my case, I've saved a small fortune while solving my own dandruff issues.
I tried doing the same thing but unfortunately after a couple of months my scalp was just too itchy and I had to go back to using something because it was just unbearable. I stick with coal tar shampoo now as none of those active ingredients seem to be in the Head & Shoulders sold in my country (at least not when I last used it a few years ago), and when I last looked into it, H&S was more about breaking up the dandruff into small pieces so you wouldn't notice it rather than fixing the underlying cause. It's a shame because I would've much preferred to go without shampoo and just wash my hair in water but alas I wasn't able to.
@@asyrafmutalib8898 You don't. Since warm water doesn't remove fat/oil. He is using a fine comb to help with this to a degree, but you would have to wash with a finer than a normal comb for an effective result. So if you have thick hair, you can forget it. Reason being, the fat will remain and cause pimples in your skin which will produce unhealthy irritation and further intensify the issue. I mean, try use the warm water you shower in to remove Fat in a pan from frying. You don't move it out of way. And if you scrub it, it still doesn't disappear. If you use boiling water, it still doesn't disappear. It still remains till you do a full scrubbing with shampoo. Sure, after a month or two, your hair will have its own bacterial stabilization, but that in itself doesn't work since Washing your hair with Chlorine/Chloramine water simply kills it. You would have to use non chlorinated/chloramine water for this procedure. Which doesn't work if you Live in a city on state regulated water. Chloramine water doesn't vanish for over 7 days unless you boil it 12 hours straight. So, you can forget the whole "natural way of cleaning". Totally agree ... But there is a downside on this idea... In europe, already a lot of ads are made in a scientific "fashion" , often made up things. A kind of "scientification" , because of credibility... Thats a little bit dangerous - and it can hurt the credibility of science itself - if products which are selled with "scientific sounding ads" dont hold their promises. It would result that people in general dont thrust science anymore - just because companys fucked the credibility of science for profit reasons.

Just my two bits. An otherwise entertaining and informative video!
This vid was paid for and only became a vid because of head n shoulders..... I have no issue of getting their monies worth and the exclusiveness of it.
After moving to the US I had a severe case of dandruff and the first thing that helped at the time was Head and shoulders. 6 years later and I still have to use it, and if I stop, my dandruff comes back much worse. After watching your video and reading the comments, I finally decided to QUIT H&S shampoo, so I guess thanks for the blatant, ridiculous ad video!
Same. Every time I use any other anti dandruff shampoo than H&S it comes back though. So I'm kind of stuck with it. Let me know if you find anything else that works.
@@Humanaut. Hi there! So I just decided to quit it cold turkey. I researched a bit of everything out there, no big info or anything, mostly people just commenting what was their experience. I found out getting organic shampoos and applying some oil every other day has worked for many. So, I went after an organic shampoo bar (barely entered those "healthy organic" shops before lol), and got myself some oil based on tea tree essence (don't use the essence raw, but an oil which has it) and other essences. I wash my hair every 2 or 3 days, as before, and apply oil if my head scratches too much. The first week was really bad. Lots of scratching, large patches of dandruff, and red patches. But now I'm nearing my third week and I can actually feel I have a much healthier scalp. And dandruff is nowhere near as bad as it was before! I still have 5 unopened bottles of H&S, but that's just nothing compared to my scalp's and hair's health. Should just throw that stuff down the drain. If you get into this detox, I wish you luck!
@@DanielBacilla Thank you for writing this thorough response. I'll take another shot at it. I am often fine for periods without H&S but then it always came back. I tried some other (non organic/bio) shampoos and they were partially horrible and seemed just like a perfume cloud. Thanks, good luck to you too in the future.
@@Humanaut. Thank you! And the same happened to me. I had previously tried just regular, off-the-shelf shampoos, and they made the situation much worse which made me go back to H&S within a week or less, every time.
I've identified two possible causes for dandruff in my case. It disappeared after A) I started taking creatine or B) I stopped using shampoo that contains sodium laureth sulfate. My best guess is A, but I can't rule out B or of course maybe a third cause.

They probably had a wide variation in warm/cold-bloodedness, it's an enormous group. The "snakes shed their entire skin" is not even an issue, since crocodiles, the other closest living relatives to dinosaurs, also do not shed skin like that, but patches of scales every now and then. They're cold blooded, so the rationale there doesn't make much sense.

As soon as he said "I'm flying to Cincinnati, to Head and Shoulder headquarters..." I knew I shouldn't expect much of this video. Sugar and flour are the main causes. Shampoo containing Sulfur, Selenium and Zinc is very helpful controlling dandruff.
Yeah, my experience was the same. I thing it's because it dries the scalp very much causing dandruff and negating the effects of killing that bacteria. For those with stronger scalp and hair I heard HS actually helps against dandruff.
I switched to using ORS products years ago after suffering with dry scalp and dandruff since junior high, and my scalp and hair have never been healthier. Cantu shampoos and other more natural brands work too. I use ORS creamy aloe shampoo, and while not sulfate free, it still is excellent. Sometimes ORS black olive products if I can find them as they are sulfate free. I think these active ingredients are kind of pointless if the inactive ingredients dry and irritate your scalp just the same.

This sounds like a great idea
Damn man
A big difference in scalp and the guts it the layer of skin.

@@TheMelopeus You shouldn't assume that I didn't, because I did.
They don’t have to show different shampoos. The main point of the video is to show why people have dandruff. I’m the Easter bunny
Yes there is no money in a permanent solution, their big profits come from people paying for the temporary solution they provide over and over again.
@@MmoviesE yes but the permanent solution would cost a consumer a lot of money up front which most people probably can't afford so buying a cheaper temporary solution up front is more accessible to more people although it probably costs more in the long run, similar to leasing a car
@@FrogChamp64 Not to mention “suffering” from dandruff is not a problem most people would be willing to pay the hefty price to fix.
Yeah crispr, me
That would require a whole ton of research, and probably not fixable with just crispr.

@Singularity are you slow
@Singularity it does because if it would treat it completely - you won't be able to sell it again
Being recommended this feels like a personal attack

gotta agree with you smackachicken, there is stuff that works and there is stuff to keep it from not happening.. especially when it comes to beardruff..
problem with head n shoulders and similar shampoo is when you stop using it you explode in itchiness and dandruff.

Yeah that's a fair criticism. I agree with you on that. I wish he brought up more of the limitations to using a shampoo to get rid of dandruff.
@@ashleyashleym2969
Or if he had contrasted Head and Shoulders with other dandruff shampoo preparations.
I mean that's true, but it's not like they're saying they have all the answers - they just talked about one specific problem and solution.
But there are ways to confirm science even if it is done for profit... Most advancements in engineering and medicine are done by corporations. Nothing wrong with it as long as there are ways to detect altered/manipulated studies.
RUclipsrs need to know how to choose sponsors, and i believe Derek is on of those youtubers
Head and shoulders is like acid for my skin. Makes the outbreaks of dandruff way worse and it itches like crazy! Not really a fan of this biased episode but still found it interesting.

Disagree. I'd rather see a short ad and a real video than a 9 minute ad masquerading as a video. I hate this trend.
Paul Vanukoff its an ad yes, but it’s breaking down the science behind dandruff and dandruff shampoo. At the end of the day i walked away informed and having learned more than if i hadn’t watched this video. And thats all i ask of a Veritasium video
@@Vasses935 It has good content for sure, but for me, good content is diminished when it's mixed with product promotion. When product promotion shows up, I stop the video, click dislike, and move on. This is a glorified ad, and it's one instance of a larger trend. I can't stand advertisement. The more a product is pushed on me, the less likely I am to buy it.
Show us the underlying mechanisms of how your product works.
yeah, they will tell you the science but tell only the good side and nothing about long term side effects.

Frankly speaking, I already had a bad inkling after reading the title and hearing the sponsor name in the first minute.
Around 2:07, when he said he visited H&S lab and the blatant repeating of this product names confirmed my suspicions that the rest of the video might sound more like an ads, and it didn't disappoint, or rather, the way this video was presented disappointed me since this ad-style just didn't fit the usual tone and style of Veritasium video.
he said it was at the beginning, but ya

@@crispian67 I've stopped using shampoo for over a year as well but I still have dandruff. Also, how do you keep your hair from smelling?
@@crispian67

Since it doesn't work in a modern society unless you want to smell. Smokers probably won't care but people that don't smoke might not want to stick too close for too long. And drenching yourself in perfume doesn't really make it better.

Long term use of dandruff shampoo is very bad for you

@@Humanaut. Thank you! And the same happened to me. I had previously tried just regular, off-the-shelf shampoos, and they made the situation much worse which made me go back to H&S within a week or less, every time.

I don’t know why, but learning the dinosaurs were warm blooded is such a huge revelation for me
They probably had a wide variation in warm/cold-bloodedness, it's an enormous group. The "snakes shed their entire skin" is not even an issue, since crocodiles, the other closest living relatives to dinosaurs, also do not shed skin like that, but patches of scales every now and then. They're cold blooded, so the rationale there doesn't make much sense.

Yeah, my experience was the same. I thing it's because it dries the scalp very much causing dandruff and negating the effects of killing that bacteria.
For those with stronger scalp and hair I heard HS actually helps against dandruff.
Same. The Dr. Sasquatch soup is the best. I finally found a shampoo that didn’t make my head sting.
Then you have a dry scalp, and not dandruff. Dry scalps flake too, and they get worse with dandruff shampoo
Use Tea tree oil
