Kevin Smith - Explaining the meaning of life as an artist

- This video is from his newest video Q&A session "Kevin Smith-Burn In Hell"
One of the most inspiring stories we have ever heard from him.
THIS IS A MUST WATCH.
Everybody needs to see this. - Развлечения
Kevin Smith does not get enough credit. His thought process is inspiring
The difference is he's one of us. And he was lucky enough to not put up with all the crap from movie studios. They do surveys and they'd too much rewrites on scripts to appeal to everyone. Then they overcopy other artists and put crap in movies like bullet time. Letterman said Hollywood CEOs are pinheads. He was telling the truth. Both Kevin and us were lucky he didn't have to put up with that crap
@@thealaskan1635 hahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHA
He's a shill through and through
Please comment after watching the new he-man reboot :)
Dude, whenever I first heard this I literally cried. No joke... Made me feel like I actually have a place in this world.
True
You do
"Live a why not life." I like that.
My motto, since starting my [micro] business 13 years ago has been, "Don't die wondering" and I've lived by that every day
This vid changed how i think about life, had a terrible time in 2012 and this vid helped me to embrace my own creativity and in 2013 i ran my own music festival. Best thing i ever did.
Whatever you face in life. Remember the best part, is you are you. You got this. I don't know you but I'm proud of you for taking charge. Cheers
Awesome!!!!
Is right mate
That’s awesome dude
This speech inspired me to make a comic book, and fund it through Kickstarter, as well as do a Podcast.
How is that going for you?
The first Kickstarter was successful and I'm doing the next issue now. The podcast is hit and miss... mostly miss. But still...
Can you give me a link? Thats so awesome!
Hey man! I love comics, thats bad ass you did it!!! If ya ever wanna shoot me a copy :3
well that..was unexpectedly beautiful and powerful to me. FUCKIN brilliant
It's also worth remembering that discouraging an artist LITERALLY caused World War II.
+jeeshwa123 HAHAHAHAHA
Dan Brennan He wasn't a good artist.
He did have the makings of a Great Architect, tho
Hahahhahahahahaaha yes
Huh. Well... That is certainly what I would have to call a *Radical Interpretation of Events.*
And I mean, for one thing, it wasn't all *just* for that reason, and that reason alone.... [ I understand, for instance, that a certain Lady of The Night, who was of the Jewish persuasion once pointed and laughed at the size of his genetalia, for instance -- or.... No, wait... I think I might be confusing Young Adolf's trauma with somebody else entirely -- possibly Osama Bin Laden, maybe... ]
But in the words of Jar-Jar Binks, as far as Smart-assed Comments go, *Ah. Yousa Point is... Well Seen.*
"Never had the makings of a varsity artist."
My mother just passed today, I needed to hear this. Now I'm going to see her body
Kevin Carpenter Just found out about my grandmother today. Came to hear this.
Kevin Carpenter 😭
HovaNirvana 😭
Lost my Mom in 2018. It's not really something you ever fully recover from. But don't let it define you, let it refine you. Corny, I know -- but it's worked for me. Be well ✌
I first heard this story when he was on Joe Rogan's podcast a while back and it hit me so hard that I made a clip of it and uploaded it here. I'm glad he's decided to immortalize it in one of his specials. It might be the best story he's ever told and it bears repeating.
I have always had a lot of respect for Kevin Smith and this is one of the most inspiring things I've ever heard.
Random Dude: asks a question about time management
Kevin Smith: 10 minute motivational speech and incredible life advice
One of my God damn heros right here.
this man inspired me to make a career in film and its because it so moving and beautiful that anyone inspired by art needs to watch it
This was fantastic. Kevin is a great man. What a great guy.
That story about his father dying, screaming he's on fire he's on fire and begging for water...I too have heard stories about people dying like that from people in hospitals. That is scary as shit. That scares the hell out of me. EVERY one of us will die some day. I think Kevin is trying to tell us something here. God bless you, Kevin. You are an inspiration.
R.I.P. Lisa Spoonauer. Thank you for helping Kevin to take his shot.
I too had a life-changing moment at 30.. watched my old man take his last breath from a battle with liver cancer, just him and I in the room. It didn't hit me that he was gone until a nurse walked in, and dawned on me that he hadn't taken a breath in a while. Watching your hero and best friend wither to nothing and then pass in front of you, you never get over it.. obviously. Of course, I go outside and it's downpouring as hard as I've ever seen
Robbie Fox sent me here...and glad he did!
That was fkn beautiful. I lost my dad in Feb and this hit home. In a good way. Thank you.
Very strong words. This helped me a lot. Thank you again Kevin smith for motivating me to do somethin with my life!
so fucking brillant
I am so motivated to better things in my life. This was worth watching
This is motivation.
When I saw Clerks way back when it put a crack in the ice of the life I was living and wanted to break out of. It didn't break it a lot but it changed me for the better. It both comforted my disturbance and disturbed my comfortableness. I'm glad Kevin was a why-not person with filmmaking.
this is such a beautiful speech, always gives me chills
Thank you for uploading this. I watched this years ago and it’s the whole reason I make RUclips videos now.
My Dad is a retired postal worker. Fuck, did THIS hit home...totally welling up with tears, at work no less.
I agree very much with his point, except for the part where he said he had no special talents. He is very talented at writing both comedy and drama. However, he would have never gotten anywhere with it in the public arena if he had not given a major effort.
Thanks for posting this, it was what I needed to hear when I needed to hear it.
That "why not" thing...I've been telling people that shit for years. I'm glad to know one of my hero's thinks the same way as me.
Oh, man. That really got me.
he said he has no discernable talent
could've fuckin fooled me
even if I didn't know who Kevin Smith was, this entire speech alone is proof that he's skilled with words and skilled as a speaker.
Well said Kev. Pure awesomeness.
that hit me in the feels, and i also got good-goosebumps. great advice mr smith
this is unbelievably inspiring. kevin smith for life
Why not!!! ❤ So powerful ❤ Thanks for sharing your story Kevin.
thank you for this, your message has just affected approx 6 more lives and you for sure got your point across.... My sister and goddaughter are artists and i support them hoping their dreams will come true. I just shared your video with them on facebook as well as some other friends. THANK YOU KEVIN!!!!!!!!
Hands down one of the most inspirational stories I've heard from a filmmaker.
WOW! That was really beautiful.
Such a good dude.
Great share the vid, focus and work hard and never give up.
this story is incredible
Fan: Hey Kevin, how do you manage your time?
Kevin: Welllll...
-
Edit: In all seriousness this was wonderful
thanks man.
Don't care what anyone says... Kevin Smith is the shit. Good dude. Hope to meet him someday and just give him a high five
And now I'm rolling a tear.
Or 10
man i almost cry!
This show is called Kevin Smith - Burn in hell. For those looking for it, it's on Netflix. Or just download it off a torrent and then buy it when it's released on DVD. or just buy RED STATE on DVD or Blu-ray to support Kevin Smith's production company.
I fucking love this guy.
We are going to talk about this video on one of our upcoming episode of Political Discontent Radio. Podcasts are available online as well as featured on iTunes. - To all artists out there, whether you are a writer, painter, illustrator, or just endless talkers like us... Never let go of your dreams. There are a million nay-sayers out there. It takes nothing but an encouraging word to support an artist.
Fuck yeah. Words to live by.
I can only imagine what the guy who asked the question felt like during and after he posed it, thinking he was probably going to give some light hearted funny-smart answer....
Every so often, I youtube the q&a from kent university (i think) specifically the parts about tim burton and prince bc it always makes me laugh, his storytelling is so good . But THis time I stumbled over here and got up feeling different. kevin came through.
This entire clip was beautiful. Thank you.❤
one gem of a quote from this diamond of a q&a:
"Live a 'why not?' life man, because we're all gunna die fucking screaming, so make sure when you die screaming you're totally fulfilled, you're like 'I took all the shots- I did it!'...take the shot, the shot is always worth taking..."
PS:And, YES @7:02-7:29 IS (sadly) A HUGE COMPLIMENT.His dad sounds like he was all a kid could wish for and what the world needs more of. Great tribute.
Thanks for the sentiment ... Enjoy the fall =^}
My dad had night terrors when I was in my early teens, for my entire life I still wonder my father a wholesome friendly family man, worked for the city knew everyone called others boss or bud.
His last night he had those night terrors where you can tell from Loud sharp moaning yells late at night and that time we tried to wake him it was done he had already passed from a heart attack in his sleep..
Why did he have to be chased?
What did he have to be afraid of?
I'm not a Kevin Smith, really. I find he's up his own ass more often than not. I don't know how I winded up here, but I have to say ... this is simply inspiring. I'll give him all the credit in the world for this bit of wisdom.
This man can recount his own Father's death in front of a crowd but breaks down watching Flash. Life is strange sometimes.
omg! tears
Okay. Im starting my DnD campaign again. Thanks pal!!
wow...
Bad ASS!
🙏
As I type this, I've got a lump in my throat. KS fucking rocks.
Political Discontent Radio is prominently featured on itunes and Stitcher Radio
Only amendment I make is not why not, but "alright how?" I don't know how to do anything like what he did but I will do my best to find out. "How do we do it?"
That’s another version of “Why?” Which will give you the same wrong answer.
If only I had any dreams left...Where was this video 25 years ago?
Just a really nice fucking time
He was right when he said "never fucked a child", there too many child molesters and rapists these days, so in my book that is a positive (a positive if you don't do it).
strong shiet....
The one dislike on here is from the one cynical head in the house
this is brilliant.
I've operated plenty of heavy machinery and power tools in cannabis
am fucking doing it
thats a cool dude right there for every one optimist there's like 20 nay-Sayers he so right try making a comic a posting it on a forum lol good example
:')
He delivers a speech like this and then proceeds to claim he has no discernible talent... Bullsh*t, Mr. Smith, Bullsh*t....
"Shill, shill, and shill some more" - Kevin Smith
An interesting take on smoking pot. Health experts always say that marijuana is bad for short term memory. Maybe your brain needs to forget trivial shit to have room for ideas. Ideas will change the world, so smoke more pot
Im to scared to be Kevin smith
one of the questions i asked myself was "how many people could you kill in one night if you had a silenced pistol and just went for a bodycount?"
its something ill never find out... and hopefully never hear the answer too, but its one that nags in the back of my head.
they shot everyone is happy no one takes.
+alidan Damn man, can you talk to your family or friends about that stuff?
group of my friends played through this hypothetical once.
we came to the conclusion, that if you have a silencer, subsonic ammo, and either learn lockpicking or can break into a house quietly, you got from sun down to morning for completely unhindered 'progress' with an average of 3-4 people depending on neighborhood, with possibly 10 minutes a house comes to nearly 200, then you have the possibility that day one, no one is the wiser or you get the fuck outta dodge, and that would go on till caught.
again, it's one of those questions you never will or never want to find the answer to.
leroy bronco Well that's not nice.
Hello. I want to check in. I hope you don't still feel that way and I feel terrible that you ever did.
"fuckin"
fuck, screaming, what's that about? im on fire? what the f
Am I the only one freaked out about his' father dying like that?....screaming....and talking about being on fire?.. like as in entering the gates of hell?.....Anyone else even remotely freaked out?
It's not hell, it's blood pressure, fever, ect... The body shutting down.
+IHVHandmind It has nothing. NOTHING. To do with Hell.
OpenMawProductions - Could you please, respectfully paraphrase and/or expound? - thank you.
Omar Haro - What I want to know is why people aren't even trying to talk about this here...you're the first one to comment and it's been like MONTHS since I posted this... I find that in and of itself alarming man.. Maybe it was his' unconscious fear...the emotions he registered, catching up with him at the end of his' life when it was pertinent for him to worry about it... know what I mean? Maybe on those sunday mornings as he sat on the couch...he wondered to himself... "maybe it's wrong that I didn't go to church like everyone else did"... and he had alot of unadressed fear that just stayed there... he finally ended up on his' deathbed and had to confront this... what else could he expect but flames? What I want to know is how many people who didn't have religious upbringings died and screamed about flames and things being hot?
Omar Haro - I think people would more likely have an open discourse about it. I think maybe what happens is people are just so freaked out by what they experience that they refrain, kind of like alien abductees. They're afraid people will think they're crazy.
Fucking. Onions.
Fuck.
15 people have no soul
+tcdahn7
That makes you the the biggest philanthropist that have ever lived....
well, at least in two years only 5 more people felt the nees to do it.
There's a lot of terrible layers in there.
..wow...that was depressing
This reminded me how much I dislike my parents...good speech tho
This would have been so much better without the constant f-bombs.
fuck off
