They're actually learning at an amazing rate. It usually takes a long time for prey to learn something is a predator, but I'm pretty sure mice and rats are teaching their young that mouse traps are an actual concept. To be wary of them or avoid them (but that it is possible to get the food without triggering the traps). This mouse knew the dangers here. No doubt.
Rats are neophobic and are suspicious of new things in their habitat....mice not so much so. I kinda laughed at the rat working up the nerve to commit. Always set your traps correctly and dead rodents tell no tales. They're all born dumb but easily educated
I live on a timber unit, on the 2nd floor. Somehow a small mouse found its way from outside into the drywall of the unit and into my apartment. (I had originally made a hole through the drywall to run my computer/network cables through and this is probably how it got in to my cosy home.) I did not know at 1st, but during the night I would hear footsteps. After an entire week of pitter patter during the night, I turn the light on and sat up in bed. Ahhh ha, I see you there you bastard of a mouse. It scuttled into my walk in closet. How the hell am I gonna catch that mouse I thought. I had to purchase some mouse traps. But wait. After an entire week this little mouse escaped the traps. I had an ancient webcam I set up. This time I put a huge 25 litre transparent plastic bag in the room and put a long string on it. I watched the webcam and waited for the bastard to come for dinner. I saw it walking into the bad and pulled in the string and the bag caught the mouse. One tiny little mouse, so much sleepiness nights.
LOL he fell into the pit of doom
Xddd hahah

Yes, it's very important to set things up for a high probability of first time kill. Otherwise you're just educating them.
