You and a very nice companion sir. He'll believe anything you tell him, never talks back and never questions you where his next meal is coming from. You're the man sir. Regards
I caught up with this just now…. 3 years later. I notice a couple of things, Kurt: 1. The paint peeling from your hood, top driver’s side: what’s overcooking in there? 2. The reason Opie is so mellow, is because of your good attitude. 3. I would’ve LOVED to hear the “Navy language out-takes” from the broken trailer! Peace, and be safe!
Not sure How I missed this video last year, but it recirculated back around for me to see at this time. I enjoyed seeing it as if it was fresh off the press.😊
Brother please keep your head up we as Americans appreciate all that you do for us and our stores. If it was not for you and other truckers our stores would be nothing in them.
Opie is such a good pup. he knows when you need him. He was like.. pet me dad, ya know you need to. just pet me and you will be ok. lol he is so cute. My Sheba was like that. I miss her.
Yeah I know, your trainer said to never ever ever back a truck up that way blah blah blah. but that's how it's done with those large cars, by a pro driver. You're a dying breed Mr truck driver, but I still salute you. Well done
When I started driving, Diesel ⛽ was .72¢ gallon. That was in 1986! I started driving a 9 car capacity auto transport. My uncle had a couple portable parking lots. We had a dedicated route, Lima Ohio to Cocoa Beach Florida to Mobile Alabama to Hazelton PA. Then, back to Lima Ohio.
A big reason for the lumper service vs employees are taxes and insurance, another reason is the company can require a certain number of people on duty at any moment and not have to pay them to wait for work to do, the lumper service is also responsible for any damage to product and on top of all that, the lumper service has to pay the warehouse for the privilege to work there. It's a win-win for the warehouse they basically sit back and collect money and only have a small overhead of utilities and staff.
If you do your own unloads, charge what the lumper charges, or make it like $65 unload $10 per pallet break down $10 per pallet made. Dock might just let you use a manual pallet jack, so you would need a solution to that and a receipt printer.
I drove for almost 20 years before hanging it up. Most of it was flats and tanks. I just couldn't take lumpers, grocery warehouses, and Wal-Marts. I guess I would rather throw chains and tarps than re-stack pallets. Beautiful truck.
You youngion's don't remember the days before deregulation. Union workers loaded and unloaded. No long waits too. But you did need to bring your own pallets. Thank God for Chep!
@@truckingwithschmidt7120 The biggest "ouch" to truck drivers today; my starting pay at Yellow Freight in 1979 was 47.5¢ per mile. In today's money that's $1.65 per mile. If anyone tells you deregulation is good for the American Worker, tell them they're very, very, wrong.
Sorry to see you lost the reefer door. Those aren't cheap. Maybe your wife can find a used one from a wreaker or something or... there's your summer holiday project, make a mold and fiberglass up a new one. Glad to see patience in action, hang in there and thanks for sharing....

But anyway , love the video brother , until next time...." KEEP ON TRUCKIN "
It’s amazing you’re still in business. I got out of it years ago when fuel prices went up 80 cents in one day. Diesel is the cheapest thing to make compared to gasoline yet prices went sky high in the late 90’s onto 2000. Stay safe out there.
You we’re pretty close to me coming through Tulsa. Paying for lumpers and waiting for them to unload it is always challenging. I used to polish on the truck while I was waiting, unless I was sleeping. Great video as always.
We'll, lumpers are different now than when I was out there years ago. Back in the 90's, lumpers hung outside the wire, waiting for work. I'd have to have a com-check ready for the lumper. Why didn't the lumpers break down the pallets on the receiving floor. You could've been on your way.
Hi Schmidt family from Bismarck Nd ran across your RUclips channel a couple day's ago. I've been watching some of your channels. I'm a local truck driver here hauling fuel, hope in about 7 years work part time . Being driving for 33 years. German sheaperds are nice 🐕 my brother had one 17 years old and health went down real quick. Kurt keep making videos doing a good job be save out their on the roads.
Hey Kurt n Opie glad you n Opie r having a safe trip. I know there are time I sat a the dairy for 4 hrs one time I sat at the dairy in Carlisle pa from 5 am to 11 pm that was no fun. I enjoy ur videos, safe travels n see ya tomorrow
Bubba I realize this was 2 months ago, and I don't know if this was after you had to buy those 2 new steers, but I couldn't help noticing that your steering wheel had a little vibration in it while you were driving! Also, I don't know if you've ever been down to Tampa Cold Storage, but back in the 80's I was going down there at least once a week, and they had independent lumpers, mostly young 18-25 year old guys, most of them were black who lived there in Tampa, and very very husky, and could load, or unload a trailer full of boxed meat stacked on the floor in nothing flat! I mean those guys were fast, and the going rate was only $50 per load, but I got with this one guy who was about 5'ft. 10"ins. tall, and built like "The Hulk!", and once he was done, he would even sweep out my trailer if it needed it, run the paperwork over to the office, get it signed, and bring it all back out to the truck to me, and he knew that I knew that he only charged $50, but after the first few times I started giving him an extra $50, and sometimes a $100, because I found out after talking to him a couple of times that he was married, to a beautiful little gal, and together they had 9 kids! Five boys, and 4 girls, and it was kinda funny, because he had dark skin, and his little wifey was light skinned! Well all the boys were dark skinned like their dad, and all the girls, the youngest one being only 6 months old were light skinned just like their mommy, and all just as beautiful! He even brought the whole gang up there one night, because I had gotten there late that time, and he introduced them all to me, and me to them! Well there was one time when my wife wanted to go with me on a run down to Tampa Cold Storage, and I had already told her about this guy, and his family, and it was just before Christmas, and unbeknown to me, she had stuffed the side boxes full of Christmas presents for all of them! Bubba you should have seen all those happy smiling wide-eyed faces when we got down there, and naturally there were hugs, and kisses all around, and of course his wife, and mine started bawling, and more hugs! Unfortunately though, that was the last run my wife was able to go on with me, because she started getting sick after that, and wasn't able to go on the long trips with me anymore, but that one run, and seeing all those beautiful smiling faces, it was one of the better times I had out on the road, and definitely one that I'll remember for a long long time! It was just another day in the life of a trucker, and that's why I envy you, cause you're still out there, and you still have the Warden, and Lil' Bud, and Tater Tot! God bless you Kurt, and the rest of the family!👨👩👦👦 🙏👍
It's another foggy night out here on i80 west, heading to davenport in the morning. if a truck passed you would lose the tail lights in less then five seconds. The joy of the first night out after 5 days off.
How old is Opie he is a very beautiful Shepherd he rides good as a shotgun rider I love that dog and his brother Jack is a good dog to keep on trucking first class is a beautiful truck beautiful family keep on trucking first class
Well at least you get reimbursed for the lumper fee. I love that little "I love trucking, I love trucking, so do you, so do you" song you made up, and how on the next scene when you said "30 minutes later", you sounded like the French narrator from Spongebob.
I had a thermometer stuck in the air vent like you do so I could better regulate the temperature in the cab. Also to know that the AC was cooling as it should be, 45*F baby! Charlie
Dear brother please tell the people in Miami Oklahoma and Wyandot Oklahoma and Tulsa hi for me I was raised in both places. Man I miss them. Opie please keep your daddy in line. Make sure you give treats Schmidt
I was pulling a dry van on the western 11. It was about 90% drop n hook about 5% live unload (lumper most of the time). The main thing I noticed about lumpers is the more you have to pay them the longer it takes to get unloaded. It didn't make much sense to me either.
The lumper thing is a liability issue. The larger company hires these small independent contractors and if a lumper gets injured (back, foot, etc.) they can on go after the small pockets of the independent contractor instead of the larger deep pocket warehouse company.
The “lumper” is an “independent contractor.” So that’s why it cost so much to unload, in some places. How did that happen, with the reefer condenser door?
Trucking with Schmidt get yourself an angle m t60f it is a temperature controlled refrigerator freezer with a swing motor in it it would do you wonders in that truck.
You hit the nail on the head brother Kurt. They don't want the responsibility of the employees. They get their trucks unloaded and don't have to pay workman's comp if someone gets hurt. That falls on the lumper company. There in turn, the lumper company gets to make money unloading and loading trucks and don't have to pay for the warehouse.
Back in the day (1989 or 1990) the lumpers were optional. I went with my friend and his dad to Miami to unload a 53' reefer trailer filled from floor to ceiling darn near to the back doors. His dad asked if we wanted to make the $150.00 because he was gonna pay it either to us or the lumpers. So when we got to the wharehouse the one guy that spoke english asked his dad if he needed them to unload. His dad pointed at us and said "thats what they're here for." Those dudes went and sat down for a good half hour before the next truck showed up. Me and my friend unloaded that whole trailer between 3 1/2 to 4 hours by ourselves. His dad was talking about the lumper services would bid to the warehouse of a per truck unload fee, and the warehouse would add money to that for a fee. So say the cheapest bidder was $200 a truck to unload, the warehouse charges the drive $225 to unload making $25 a truck for a product they ordered and not paying employees a dime to unload it. Back in 1989 minimum wage was $3.35 per hour so all five guys were getting $16.75 per hour as a group. The five of them should have emptied that trailer at least in 2 hours making the total the lumpers would get paid $33.50. They were going to charge $150.00 to unload so that would be $116.50 for that one trailer for the lumper company unless the warehouse got a few dollars of it. I wonder how many trailers they would do in a normal day.
Love me some Opie. Kurt you're not half bad yourself. Don't show Warden the video of you backing into the dock. Of course she knows she can't change you. Great show tonight. You & Opie stay safe. Give Opie a belly rub. Good night all and God bless each of you.
cracking video mr Schmidt and the next time you're good lady wife says you cant multi-task shiw her the clip of you standing on the step of FIRST CLASS and reversing and recording and for once you can say "i told you i can multi-task" lol and as for you having a sneaky maccys can't fault you as i had one yesterday MR OPIES face was priceless when he saw the maccys bag and as for losing a piece of your trailer im feeling your pain as my travel agent sent me to collect a trailer and it wasnt there so he lost the whole trailer 😂😂😂 looking forward to the next video stay safe out there young man keep FIRST CLASS singing along from joff in the UK
@@truckingwithschmidt7120 he left it on the Northbound side of the truckstop and he was looking around the southbound side of the truckstop 😂😂😂of course we haven't let him forget about it lol

Lumpers do breakdown the pallets to match with the paperwork you have. Then when they done warehouse reciever shows up and scan everything they breakdown. Then sing you BOL . Clean, shor, rejected blah blah.
Lumpers are over paid warehouse help its crazy when I owned my truck I always made sure to get my money back cause most brokers or whoever forgets to mention that part.. But you do a great job explaining it for people and Opie is awesome
Alot of lumper services are not warehouse employees. At least when I was a lumper. It was an independent company that would bid on warehouse services. We bid on everything from lumping to pallet repair to order selecting. The owner was a greedy bastard who's dad had numerous ties to mafia. Go figure.
I'm a driver for Cardinal that place you delivered to in this video. I thought I seen your truck there, but just didn't connect the dots! Damn I wish I would've realized that I would've said hey.
Seeing where you brushed Opie made me think about how people who don't have or never had a GSD understand just how much they shed. Your correct when you said you could brush him every day and get that much hair every time. I have to be honest and say that I watch your videos to see Opie and to listen to your truck. The new trucks just don't have the same sound. Opie is that same color as my boy.
Trucking With Schmidt my GSD only sheds twice a year for 6 months each time. Lol. Every time I brush him I get enough hair to make another full size GSD.
Stay out of Hunts Points Market in the Bronx NY if you don’t want to deal with Lumpers. I’m retired now by you use to have to pay to get in the market and then pay lumpers to unload not to mention all the tolls just to get there. BTW beautiful puppy, what a good puppy
@@harleyhawk7959 my GSD lives inside. Only time he goes out is to do his business. They shed. They have a nick name "German Shedders." It is the one thing you put up with because you love the goofballs.
What is that high pitched whistle? When I drove OTR (very short time) lumpers were what I could hire to bring load to rear of trailer. (Most places would rather do entire unload with me staying out of way). But lazy drivers could hire guys standing around behind loading dock to do it. Back up nice to loading dock and get requests to back up others trailers. 1980s everyone wasn’t sue happy. I saw the white out of corner of my eye. My thought was. “Did he leave his doors open?” Hope that cover not too $$$
I'm pretty sure I could listen to nothing but upshifts and downshifts for hours, that truck sounds so good and relaxing!
You and a very nice companion sir. He'll believe anything you tell him, never talks back and never questions you where his next meal is coming from. You're the man sir. Regards

Lol ya probably

Seeing all those piles of Opie fur reminded me why they are also called German Shedders.
Old school backing like nothing 😳 one day I hope I back like that 👌🏻

Go figure.
Stay positive!
I work for a dealership of your brand. Good to see you in a W9er.. 1st class indeed.
Nice work man 👍
I'm a driver for Cardinal that place you delivered to in this video. I thought I seen your truck there, but just didn't connect the dots! Damn I wish I would've realized that I would've said hey.
Good to hear. Next time.
I'm a yard driver that night, saw your logo on your truck, didn't have time to say hey.
Well I'm sure I'll be back . Thank you for watching
You are Correct Sir.
Ya they are definitely shedders
Trucking With Schmidt my GSD only sheds twice a year for 6 months each time. Lol. Every time I brush him I get enough hair to make another full size GSD.
Lol
The lumpers don't always work a full shift. Once the loads are done, they go home. Contract workers, probably not union.
I see you rolling outlaw man
Lol good deal
One more thing First Class sounds great through the Air Pods I got for Christmas.
Nice
You are lucky that is not raining or snowing when hanging out of the door of the trucker. The plate itself cracked and flew away... Opie a such a ham!
Yup
Pull tankers and you never have to worry about lumpers.
You have a good day and be careful
Thank you and you as well
Your correct on lumper...services
Parking at night is rediculous. Lots fill up quick. Be safe bro
That w9 sounds perfect not to quiet not to loud
That poping in the exhaust------ a loose sleave inside the muffler----mine used to do that --- drove me crazzy till I found it----
Its all straight. I think its in the mounts .
Where did you get the steps for Opie do go up and down? I've searched around and cant find them. I f my your videos are great.
Stay out of Hunts Points Market in the Bronx NY if you don’t want to deal with Lumpers. I’m retired now by you use to have to pay to get in the market and then pay lumpers to unload not to mention all the tolls just to get there. BTW beautiful puppy, what a good puppy
Thank you
My GSD sheds just like that, it’s ridiculous.
We have 2 Shepherds and they shed 365 days a year.
if a dog goes from inside to outside, they will constantly shed. they either have to be inside or out.
@@harleyhawk7959 not a German Shepherd.
“Did he leave his doors open?” Hope that cover not too $$$
Its the turbo
the upper exhaust mount causes the noise, there is a updated mount and a tib for it
Thank you
