This is total nonsense. It shouldn't be her fault, it's both the cameraman and producer's fault. I've been in live studio for only God knows the time. When there's a break in transmission, before you go back online, you'll alert the anchor so as to be conscious. I think there's a foul play here, maybe someone just want someone to be sacked.
They wanted to fire her. That's nothing to fire someone over.

I don't understand what the big deal was other than how she reacted. She should have just calmly put the pen down and started speaking instead of jumping and looking surprised. The reaction is more embarrassing than playing with a pen.

I seen a news morning person fall asleep on their co-host. He was a legend in the community, but his time was coming to an end.
This woman should not have been fired. The director or producer should have alerted her that the live camera was about to be back on her. Even if that is not how they operate at that particular studio , then they should expect small bloopers such as these from time to time.

Two thoughts: 1) It was her shocked reaction, not the pen playing, but not a justified reason; 2) Someone wanted her gone and used any excuse to fire her.
