HINNOM, VALLEY OF (גֵּיא הִנֹּם, gei' hinnom). A valley stretching along the southwestern side of Jerusalem. The Valley of Hinnom curves along the southwestern side of the city of Jerusalem, beginning near the Jaffa Gate at the west and deepening to a gorge as it meets the Kidron valley at the south of the city.
The Valley of Hinnom is the Wadi er-Rababi, located west and south of the city.
The Old Testament typically depicts the Hinnom Valley as a site of idolatry and evil. The valley was the latitudinal boundary between the tribal territories of Judah and Benjamin (Josh 15:8; 18:16). It later became the marker of the northern border of Judah’s postexilic settlement.
The prophets speak negatively about the Hinnom Valley. Jeremiah indicates that the Hinnom Valley, which was synonymous with Baal worship (Jer 2:23) and the sacrifice of children, would be transformed into a Valley of Slaughter (גֵּיא הַהַרֵגָה, gei' haharegah; Jer 7:31-32; 19:5-6) on the Day of the Lord as recompense for all the innocent who had already been sacrificed.
