They've said in interviews that they'd rather have an active performance than just fiddling with nobs and laptops. It gives them something to do. I'd rather seem them do this than the alternative.

I agree, although you gotta admit that he's playing those claps extremely tight! I also saw them live and he played some crazy drum soli, I'm wondering why in this video all he did was playing the claps on the second and fourth beat.
