assume that ,if the wheel is rotating forward direction ( clock wise). when we apply brakes ,one of the shoes in brake drum will come in contact with same direction of wheel rotation ,which is known as leading shoe .vice versa (other shoe is try to oppose vehicle wheel in opposite direction of wheel rotation which is knwn as trainling shoe) NOTE: it's purely depends upon ,a) BRAKE SHOE FORCE DIRECTION and b) WHEEL ROTATION DIRECTION only . if both forces are same direction then it is LEADING SHOE . if they are not its TRAILING SHOE
