- Bloomberg journalist Zeke Faux travelled around the world to better understand the world of crypto currencies, meeting the biggest names in the space on superyachts in the Caribbean, at parties in Miami and travelling to El Salvador to see how bitcoin is being used in the real world.
Along the way he buys a Bored Ape with his book advance and sends Tether to a scammer in Cambodia to learn the real-world uses of cryptocurrencies.

Patrick Boyle, this is not going away, and it's not just a fad. Your world of trading stocks that only the rich have access to and can cheat with, is over. Everything is going to be digitalized and trading will be done 24/7. Yes there are scams in this emerging market, but the market is real and will replace traditional finance. Sorry.
Patrick, this was a Class A interview! Very interesting guest!! Thank you!
This was an awesome interview by Patrick, thanks for having me on!
This interview was fascinating! Hope I can get a copy here in Australia. Thank-you for being so generous with your time Zeke - which unlike crypto, has real value! Cheers from Oz!!
Funny story
This guy seems like an enjoyable presence. Thank you
I've never seen Patrick laughing like that!
Thanks Zeke, I really enjoyed the book.

Zeke: I am definitely getting scammed. Let the transaction go through.
My favorite part of the interview!
This conversation restored my faith in society. It's a relief to know i am not alone in a world gone mad.
It would be a shame if you took this as the whole story and dismissed the entire sector before completing your research. There are arguments against some of the positions here.
There will always be individuals willing to part way with widely accepted currency in exchange for Art and other material or digital items. The problem with NFT's and Crypto is with viewing them as investments. Economies run best with a small amount of inflation built in, thus it's unwise to believe currency in its paper form will have more purchasing power in the future. However, that's exactly why many people own crypto. @@Baldnesz

Mind-blowing brainstorm from Zeke's statement. Celebrities are now a second class famous person to online influencers. That has to be felt by the narcissists of Hollywood at the moment. I hadn't considered this before but Zeke is right, celebrities are trying to be more like online yokels and financial gurus because they are no longer the most famous thing.
Yup. Thanks to the internet & social media boom, Hollywood celebs have hundreds of not thousands of competitors clamoring for our attention (and by extension, our money). I have been more active on RUclips than cable networks or other streaming services.
I think it's more that they are trying to be something greater than "content creators". Music, movies and TV are now just content and actors and singers are just content creators. But business gurus are something more.
Bitcoin Beach will never not make my head catch fire. How arrogant. I suppose that is the hallmark of a crypto bro.
I was curious what a faux interview was; it’s all making sense now!
Patrick, Coffeezilla and a few more are just a league on their own when we talk finance RUclipsrs
Patty is an actual xpert
Good ones but also you are going to miss out the next run
Coffezilla is waaaay beyond Patrick Boyle's league. Like the Kindergarden version. The Mr. Blippi of finance - and that is probably a big offence to Blippi.
Coffe is that nerd at the desk next to you in Jr. High you couldn't get to shut up 😂
After watching this episode I bought Number GO Up on audible and didn't get diddly-squat done for a day because I couldn't stop listening to it. As a person with only a layman's knowledge of the financial world, and apologize if including crypto in the financial world is an insult to your profession, I was dumbstruck by the sheer insanity going on. Zeke Faux is a master storyteller and great journalist. Thanks so much for this episode.
Patrick has such an excellent sense of humor! I just loved it when they started joking about 21 million Toy Story VHS tapes at the end of the interview.
"This is just a giant sack of rotten apples" lol
I've just started reviewing smart contracts and there are definitely more than a few that are pretty sketch.
Great interview. This was a fantastic episode.
Make cider, raw scrumpy.
all are sketch
Zeke Faux's articles are actually engaging to read. Most other reporter's write articles that all follow the same boring newspaper conventions.
"reporter's" -5 points for apostrophe abuse.
Wow, if his surname is actually Faux and he investigates scams, that's something!
Real gonzo reporting, getting fully involved in the reality.
LOL. When did you read them all?
"It's not my fault that what he said was very very dumb..."
"You'd like to have tricked it out of him rather than have him just spill it to you."
This was such a funny part of the interview. Thank you:)
Just got there. 😂 Brilliant. I have the same condition as Zeke - if I'm just crushing someone, I start to sort of want to give them an out, like "oh, well, I could be wrong actually, here's what you _probably_ meant..."
A book like this one is WELL overdue. Financial journalists should be embarrassed for failing to expose crypto earlier.
Why do research when you need to publish every 1-7 days? Reading is _hard_ , pointing at pretty charts is much better for throughput.
(i.e. the journos have incentives almost as inherently inconsistent as financial security institutions' executives and employees)
Bro.. crypto has no calculable NAV. There's no utility, no underlying value. Its pretty obvious its gambling/scam.
You are talking nonsense. You are acting like it wasn't obvious that these were scams. They were giving 18 percent interest. That is a lot higher than Bernie Madoff. FTX was registered in a lawless Caribbean pirate country. The other big exchange is located literally nowhere to avoid any laws whatsoever. Nothing they said made any sense. The people who gave them money were just fools.
David Gerard, who has a great interview on the rational reminder podcast, was the first to write a book critical and negative on crypto
Oh, there were plenty of financial journalists calling crypto a scam for years. But number go up, so just fud. /s
38:34 through 49:00 on the victims in scam call centers in Cambodia... This is heartbreaking! That vietnamese RUclipsr is a modern day Schindler. A real hero. For more insight into how the scam itself works, RUclipsr serpentza has a good episode on the "Pig Butchering Scam." But seriously, if Zeke Faux wants another journalistic adventure after covering crypto, there's one right in front of him. Figuring out how to truly expose and shut down those scam centers sounds like a very worthy pursuit.
Bitcoin and crypto fails even at the ideology level: A decentralized currency that everyone can partake in. Partake means anyone can acquire bitcoin through mining. Which is false because a strong player can just acquire a large mine of bitcoin. This actually happened when a group acquired more than 50% of the mines. The other problem is that the more people that mines, the harder it is to acquire bitcoin. And if everyone decided to mine, then we will have an energy crisis. Mining is very energy intensive. So it fails on the part where everyone can partake.
As for decentralized? well we already see the shet show. People want governmental control. Someone to hold other accountable, someone to regulate and enforce. So it fails on the ideology level.
All in all, a horrible idea that doesn't work as it fails on all account of a currency.
If that's your best attempt at understanding bitcoin then, I'm sorry.
@@minesadabI'm sorry for you. You'd turn the planet into a desert just to mine stupid bitcoin
The man made Patrick laugh. I'm buying his book
That eyebrow raise and "mmm" in response to "it was also kinda bad, because it showed the price could go down 50% in one week" is priceless.
51:27 I love that Sequoia Capital story because it shows us normal folks that venture capitalists can be stupider than the average person.
Absolutely loved this interview. Must be the best interview I have listened for months.
Agree. I was delightfully surprised because I had no expectation when I clicked the thumbnail. I also like the author's personality. He was not a smooth talker or a confident/dominant speaker. He seemed more like a smart and kind-hearted nerd who curious about things, and persistent enough to get to the bottom of those things. Somehow this makes him look genuine and convincing.
It was good, but I think the Joe Biden interview with Cardi B was way better

I love the way the author played along with Mr. Boyle's comic setups.

It's still a terribly misguided argument. It's like comparing the visa payment network to the inter-bank clearance layer and saying the clearance layer will never work.
I love how the Razzle Khan meme lives on 😂😂
From a social sense, Cryptocurrency does seem to be a strange kind of combination fad and cult. Whenever a crypto pundit comes across negative comments on crypto, you find they follow very similar patterns to attack the critics in the same kind of way cults attack their critics, but also worded in the same sort of way uber-fans go after critics of their star singers, actors, directors, musicians, atheletes, etc.
It's kind like a religion and kind of like a hobby at the same time. More a cultural pursuit disguised as an investment strategy. It's a strange mirror to the actual high-end art market which is an investment strategy for the very wealthy disguised as a cultural pursuit.
It's also interesting how people who don't understand Bitcoin are so confident that proponents are delusional and/or stupid. It's a strange psychological phenomenon - just part of what makes up the tapestry of life I guess.
What a great and educational show. I don't usually watch hour long videos but this was too good to cut short.

I don't even care about crypto and this was such a good, fascinating interview Patrick
Toy Story VHS being our post-apocalypse currency would fit pretty well with our society being exactly like a fictional dystopia but less cool.
I just purchased the book on audible. That will be the first thing I have ever purchased based on the recommendation of an influencer, so I hope it’s not a scam.
This man's golden retriever energy is so endeering, I literally cannot.
If i were absurdly wealthy I would pay patrick boyle to manage my family office.
Patrick will destroy your portfolio
Easy
Psst... Hey kid! ... This is Patrick Boyle.. wanna buy some Toy Story VHS tapes?
Bravo Patrick, great interview! I paid 7 Toy Story videos for Zeke's book. Can't wait to read it!
Super interesting interview! You got some great interview skills Patrick, definitely hope to see more. Zeke definitely went on one hell of a wild ride there, wow.
I owned every single one of the beanie babies in the example image
This was really a good interview. I felt throughout that Zeke investigated the saga with a very open mind with unbiased or getting fully sucked into the hype while he was in the center of it with the bigshots. Respect!!
thanks!!
I'm so confused. I thought this was a brilliantly cut together parody (I don't know Zeke or his work), but apparently Faux is Zeke's last name? So it's not a Faux interview, but rather a real one.
Still an enjoyable interview.
Love this interview. However, the VHS hatchet job is just stupid and insulting to our intelligence. By now, Patrick should know his audience is smart enough to understand that a monetary system shouldn't be based on the scarcity of VHS recordings of Toy Story. We all know the money is in The Little Mermaid (the white VHS version).
