I was an apprentice with John's and Waygood during the reconstruction. I worked on the fabrication of the deck panels and the box girders girders. I visited the site during reconstruction reconstruction
The workers were the true Heroes. The engineer's and managers have nothing to be proud of. 38 Brave workers lives lost. R, I.P. there's a plate on the eastern side on one of the columns that names all the workers who lost their lives .
(9:52) You will hear contextual reference to the "the many [steel] boxes that were assembled in the old method". By this, they mean the method used before the collapse. The collapse was in large part caused by the construction method and the inexperience of the experts who were in charge. For those interested, have a read of the Royal Commission Report into the collapse. www.westgatebridge.org/sites/default/files/downloads/report-of-royal-commission.pdf
When I was in primary school North Melbourne! I remember we went on a school excursion to West Gate bridge this was after the collapse! I remember walking on the bridge as a 5 year old
Well, it’s a documentary about the engineering aspects. It did mention the collapse and the modifications that were made and the fact that the Royal Commission was critical of the design and construction methods used by the contractors, Freeman Fox.
From 1978 to 2011 over 900 people jumped off the West Gate Bridge by kinning themselves. In 2011 was the worlds #3 suicide hot spot after Beachy Head (UK) and the Golden Gate Bridge (USA). On Christmas Eve 2020 iI played six songs at the base of the bridge. One of them was "Ruru's Suicide Show On A Live Stream" by Shinsei Kamattechan which is a reference to a girl called Rorochan who died by suicide in 2013. And 50% of the online moniker I use on RUclips has a reference to the October 1970 event. The other 50% refers to the suicide to two 16-year old emo (or e-girls) girls in Melbourne in April 2007.
Hello, thanks for uploading this film. I'm working on a documentary about the West Gate Bridge and would be keen to use some of this footage. Do you own the rights to this video and would you be happy for us to use it? Happy to continue the discussion via email. Thanks!
A tunnel would have been a much better option, certainly safer, and no, don't gimme that line on hazardous materials can't go in tunnels, because they can. I agree that this bridge is about as ugly as they come.
what a shit bridge. was never designed to carry the weight it carries now. ugliest eyesore in melb, you cannot beat the bolte bridge for looks, lighting and strength. the westgate has to be the most depressing bridge to be on and looks like absolute shitday and night. the new tunnel will ease weight off the bridge especially trucks.
Best know for all the suicides (over 900) and the murder of Darcey Freeman by her fathwer in 2009 (which is our version of the Watts Family Murders in the USA).
The Weatgate Bridge is quite elegant has a modern style compared to the old old fashioned Sydney Harbour Bridge which was a copy of the Tyne Bridge in North East England........

I said nothing about engineers.

Westgate Bridge original design, designed and engineered by Freeman, Fox, Fcukups inc.
this was a joke of a documentary hardly mentioning the collapse in 1970 and those poor 37 blokes who perished.

I was disappointed, but that's to be expected. Its a doco about bridge construction

Why wasn't the same structural analysis applied to the box girder design before it was built not after it collapsed?
exactly. it was completely different after the disaster. completely
can tell it was made by the builder , only how good it is , no mention of bridge fail or reconstruction , :)

@Iranian Bob i did ,, exceelent documentary :)

Thanks!
Apparently the '' Box Bridge Construction '' Had some problems In England ??
HOW ABOUT ALL THE LIVES THAT WERE LOST
It's only a matter of time before the bridge collapses again due to the huge unplanned weight of the steel suicide fencing along its entire length.
@@magyaradam Don't you know what time means?

They can - but the hundreds of deaths from fires indicate they shouldn’t…
