This really helped me Steve, thank you. I’m a 57 year old life long wanna be guitar player (took my first lesson in second grade). It took 50 years but I finally have the patience and discipline to commit to daily practice, typically twice a day, and I have been doing so for 2 years. I’ve known a few basic scale patterns for quite some time, but this past week my newest guitar teacher has tasked me to learn all minor pentatonic scale patterns. With all the pentatonic scale practice and this video, I’m actually beginning to see the relationships on the fretboard. I know once that “lightbulb” finally comes on, and I CLEARLY see the relationships, I’m going to be like, UGH, this is so obvious! STOOOPID YOHO! Sincerely, thank you for all you do to help us wanna be’s, you are a wonderful source of information for both guitar and music theory, and great teacher to boot. 🤘😆🤘
Hey thanks so much for your comment and for sharing! I'm so glad to know the lessons and videos have been helpful! Any questions please feel free to ask anytime! Keep up the great work and thanks again for your kind words! 🙂
Awesome lesson Steve. I've never seen the 1 4 5 explained so easily. How you stretched the scale ( 4th and 5th strings) helped tremendously to visually make sense to me. Thank you.

Sir I came across very odd cord progression for my understanding. That is in Em scale. It's the sixed note of G major so cord progression should be G, C, D, and a minor of E. But in hotel California it goes Em, B7, D, A, C, G, Am, and B7 again. What type of cord grouping is this, other than 6th, 5th, and 4th of scale. How A major and minor are sounding good together!!
Tried jamming the 1-4-5 with the new band i’m trying to form, but the drummer said it was boring for the drums :/ any suggestions on what we could do as a band instead?
Hey! Awesome lesson. Wondering, I get the 1 4 and 5 from the major scale. But How do you know what makes up the specific chord from the 1 or 4 or 5? Like. You had like three fingers down and one fret barred for the 1 st. I get knowing that the root of the 1st must be in the chord, so you’ll have a finger on that. But what about the other fingers? Hopefully this makes sense. Like how do you know what other notes make up that 4th??
Thanks for watching, Julie! Here's a video where Steve explains how to create chords from the major scale: ruclips.net/video/4rwjyCSY5lE/видео.html Here's how it works: There are 7 notes in every major diatonic scale. For every note, there's a chord, and each chord has 3 notes. The 3 notes in each chord are called the root, the 3rd, and the 5th. Let's use the C major diatonic scale as an example. Here are the 7 notes in the C major diatonic scale: C D E F G A B To find the chords, start on each note, then add the 3rd and 5th notes after it. For example, a C chord has the notes C, E, and G. You skip over the second note D and the 4th note F. The next chord in the key of C major is Dm. The notes in Dm are D, F, and A. Which you get by starting at D, and playing the 3rd note (F) and 5th note (A) that come after D in the scale. And you can find the rest of the chords the same way. So, the chords in the key of C major are: C (C, E, G) Dm (D, F, A) Em (E, G, B) F (F, A, C) G (G, B, D) Am (A, C, E) Bdim (B, D, F) Watch the video above, and it'll all make sense! :-) Just wanted to give a heads-up, if you enjoy Steve’s RUclips videos, you should definitely go here and check out the new GuitarZoom Premium Membership → guitarzoom.com/join Members get unlimited streaming of 40+ of Steve’s best guitar courses, including ✔️ CAGED Made Simple ✔️ Barre Chords Made Easy ✔️ Ear Training 2.0 ✔️ Unlocking The Fretboard Connection ✔️ Chord Chasing Mastery ✔️ Music Theory Made Easy ✔️ Play Guitar For Life ✔️ Blues Guitar ✔️ Rock Licks ✔️ Acoustic Guitar ...and many more. There are 7 notes in every major diatonic scale.

The 3 notes in each chord are called the root, the 3rd, and the 5th.
Let's use the C major diatonic scale as an example. Here are the 7 notes in the C major diatonic scale:

To find the chords, start on each note, then add the 3rd and 5th notes after it.
So, the chords in the key of C major are:
C (C, E, G)
Dm (D, F, A)
Em (E, G, B)
F (F, A, C)
G (G, B, D)
Am (A, C, E)
Bdim (B, D, F)
