as someone with PTSD i found it hard to write how the character showing their PTSD, but everything in this video is correct and at this point it just goes unnoticed to me, so if your character has PTSD try to make it seem like a normal part of their life and flashbacks don't last for hours or even minutes its just a quick flash of everything that happened during that moment.

I had plain old normal PTSD from living in a crime-ridden city. That cleared up by itself after a year in a very safe place. With this classic PTSD I noticed hypervigilance and dreams the most. I was in my early 20's, working at a fast food restaurant with a bunch of teens and early twenties coworkers and we enjoyed playing games with one another. One was, try to sneak up on each other. No one could sneak up on me. I was on red alert for potential criminal activity at all times.
The dreams would catapult me out of sleep, not knowing where I was or what was happening and I'd be jumping out of bed before I even knew I was awake. I'd suddenly find myself holding a knife or a blunt object (which I kept by my bed), tearing around the apartment looking for an intruder, in absolute terror. I once took a nap with someone else in the room, and they reported every time they made a small noise, I would sit up and say "Whos there?" But I was asleep the whole time.
On the other hand, I still have complex PTSD, and it's a bitch to treat. I'm still struggling. The symptoms are so deep and engrained, it's like trying to take apart my whole personality.

But the perspective from which Nancy has PTSD is from her little sister and I was so worried I would get something wrong due to writing from a child’s mind, who, obviously doesn't understand everything her older sister is going throuh right now. The main character in my narrative primarily used the 4th response FAWN (a people pleaser) Goes along with what people say or do, trying to make them happy and gets upset if she can't. As her brain learned that would cause people to lash out, isolate or abandon her. Her secondary responses are FREEZE and FLIGHT. Can be shown as restlessness, feeling of being trapped; depression and difficulty with eating. Often due to inability to accomplish the primary response. A Fawn Freeze Flight response while a secondary character is Fight Flight Freeze, a hypervigilant warrior.

I have a character whose response pattern is Freeze, Flight, Fawn. His attitude is that he has to endure everything that comes his way so that no one else gets hurt. If freezing doesn't work, he flees. If he is trapped and can't flee, he tries to please people because he is afraid of hurting others, even if it's just in a small way.

I have a character who has PTSD from being used a weapon of war, and resorts to FIGHT, and FREEZE primarily. As context, she has attempted, to move on, though struggles with it, and for now she emotionally and physically distances herself from people, as she hasn't understood any concept of just being rather "normal". She constantly was living in a place where she could've been killed in any moment, and moving on from that, she doesn't really take it too well when people try to interact with her, because, well, she doesn't understand how interaction works. I plan to introduce her as someone in a story me and my friends are writing together, though, I'm having some trouble figuring out how she would interact with the main group of protaginists.

I’ve been currently researching Dissociative Identity Disorder for fanfic. Let me give advice first for anybody writing about DID and wanting to do it right: Research, research, and more research. Watch RUclips videos by people with the disorder, read academic papers on it, etc.
The reason I’m doing this to this particular character is because had the circumstances been right in canon, this could’ve happened, and the ways it would affect his life would be significant. I also have to take into account how certain aspects of this universe’s magic system will interact with DID. It’s a very tiring, but rewarding process. Your video is one of many that are helping me write this.
I am taking great pains in writing it accurately, and I hope my efforts aren’t for naught.

@@WriterBrandonMcNulty Yes actually. In a video by @The Entropy System, they were describing how new alters are formed. The thing I found interesting was DID’s relationship with PTSD. The video explains it better but, essentially, PTSD is like DID. When an alter is formed due to trauma, a large part will break off. When a person develops PTSD, something similar happens, but on a much tinier scale.
There is so much I’m learning about this disorder and it is very fascinating.

I realised I knew very little about PTSD so I did some research, helped by the book "The body keeps score" for example, and sure enough. That puts my main character and their story in a whole new perspective. So now I have to go back, check for inconsistencies and contraditions. Again.

A character of mine has PTSD from physical abuse. He's not a very open character, and he's learned to mask very well, so the other characters don't catch on at first to the fact that he dealt with traumatic experiences for a long time. He deals with mainly flashbacks and nightmares, and is extremely sensitive to touch because of how his master hurt him.

For me the interesting part of PTSD is that it works at the beliefs and values levels of cognition (model from NLP) so they won't be aware of how they sabotage themselves but they'll have a broken unconscious idea of how to function, e.g. if they are perfectly tidy they will be loved, or they may always refuse an umbrella and judge those who use them because they are nasty things that put people's eyes out.

My current project has a person dealing with ptsd, and as someone who has it myself I must say everything here is very accurate. You don’t know you are acting “strangely” until afterwards, if at all and the flashbacks and/or triggers are usually something that happens without you noticing. Also when you are constantly in fight or flight your body is making way to much adrenaline which can cause extreme anxiety and shaking like shaky hands cause the body is trying to get rid of all the extra energy. Or at least this is how my C PTSD is of course it different between people.

I have been practicing psychology for over 25 years and I'm now writing my first novel. My protagonist has some symptoms of PTSD but struggles more with being victimized by a deep betrayal. Many of the signs and symptoms of dealing with deep betrayal can overlap with, or mimic, a more typical psychological trauma. Moreover, both can be present in the same patient. Yet, discerning between the two however has significant treatment implications. Brandon, this was an excellent overview of writing characters with PTSD. Along with one's particular factors of psychological resilience, there are a lot of sociological factors that can affect whether a person gets better or not over time with PTSD, a condition which can be crippling for sure.

I still carry the effects of chronic PTSD, but my character suffers from an acute form. In my case, the freeze and fight instincts are most familiar; with my character, he's definitely more a fighter. One thing I learned from my experience is that I lost a natural fear of death. When it happens, it happens. It has happened multiple times since my experiences, but when other people are freaking out when things do get to a life and death situation, I'm calm-I've been there. It makes me come across as callous, when in reality, it's just a mortal phobia I was forced to confront in my early twenties.

@@ZeroXXIII It's a tricky subject, and I imagine it scares off some teachers and RUclipsrs from talking about it.
But PTSD is prevalent in fiction, and the more we discuss it, the more we can understand it. I mean, it shows up in Marvel movies, and that's as popular as it gets these days.
I'm thinking of doing another video on writing violence and other brutality soon. Just need to gather the right material. One of my subscribers requested it, so I'll give it a shot

I've been planning a romance novel for a few years now and my main character has ptsd and my female character has ptsd symptoms as well the overall theme is grief as they both have lost loved ones
This is a personal story I want to write because I have lost someone which effected me a lot and I have ptsd as well so it's been hard writing it I know people will have an issue with the word romance but I don't intend on romanticising the condition it's very delicate and moving

Without going in to details, i am currently creating a character with PTSD:
While i have a limited knowledge about psychology, i understood a simple but important detail about human mind: the corruption and the healing process doesn't happen in a couple a days.
I admit that i too may use too much the relationship between the protagonist and her boyfriend, i still don't use it as a definitive cure. For example, the protagonist is mentally and physically tested by her fears and paranoia at a level where she doesn't distinguish reality and illusion anymore. She maintais the same sense of dread, disgust or distrust in certain situstions that may remind her of her trauma.
She doesn't start cry, scream or become paralysed, but she still may experience a slight uncomfortable feeling. It is satysfing to see your characters overcome their limits, fears and obstacles i think that is still important that they must appear as humans. They sure grow stronger, but keeping small parts of their insecurities still alive just a while longer can make them appear more human and more realistic, especially considering that some psychological injuries may take months or even decades to truly heal. (In my case, i think is a good choise considering that my writings focus heavily on the psychological aspects and how those aspects can alter.)
I hope i was clear in what i was trying to convey, i am italian. As always, you are doing a great job! Good luck to you and to all the writers out there.

Yes, the main character of my WIP heavily suffers from it. For the most part, she copes by binge-eating whenever she's stressed, (she used to smoke, but she nowadays she mostly chows down on lollipops instead). For the most part, until the inciting incident galvanizes her, she's just kind of drifting through her career with no real purpose or prospects whatsoever.

My main character is all up in PTSD because of what I did to him in book I, I do feel bad about that. So guiding him into the following stories while he's so wounded and traumatised is a delicate balance.

Kind of. I have a character named Jasper from one of my stories that comes off as that bitter old man that is an ass. My friend barrow him for her story that tales place earlyer in our timeline, and I have been wanting to wright Jasper's story so you have a better understanding as to how he became the way he is. But I'm kind of afraid to becasue I'm afraid I wouldn't tell the story wright.

I have plans to write a book (well fan fiction) and it’ll have 4 parts but I like to call them seasons (because it’s going to be based on a TV show). Here’s what I have without spoiling anything I got planned. Part 1 is going to be slice of life, fleshing out the main cast and having some hints here in there that something is off with a twist at the end. Part 2 is the aftermath and dealing with some shady stuff mixed in (I’m keeping it vague for now). Part 3 is where I want to place PTSD and trauma for the main character, at least in her eyes because she doesn’t know what the others are dealing with, with a tournament arc mixed in. Part 4 is still a work in progress at least in planning stages. All you need to know is the characters are going to deal with whoever is behind all of what’s happening. That’s all I have for now, still working on Part 1 though so the other stuff is going to come much later idk when

Rather late to the party. My present project's main character has PTSD and helps many of the orbital characters work with and through their life-altering traumas. Part of the theme is the wide variety of such traumas, and responses, as well as the varying time lapses from trauma to symptoms.

I’m thinking about giving my protagonist from my story PTSD considering all the trauma he went through. After watching this video, I think I understand it better and can thus write it in a more proper way, especially with learning the reactions Fight, Flight, and Freeze (I think he’d experience all of these reactions at least once).

I had just finished an English class whose main purpose is disability, PTSD was not covered but I'm trying to write a story that depicts it. the main character has been fighting her whole life and she is currently at a moment where she is in a safe space with other people who mean her no harm. Despite her current environment, she still feels like she is in the past and struggles to stick to the present. she often gets into a fight response but also gets into the freeze reaction.
the story is still at its starting point and currently, she is in an environment that would be considered "normal", but she doesn't feel normal at all. She feels out of place despite how relatively safe she is from the harm she once had to face in the past. she not only suffers from PTSD but also from depression.

I have a character in an epic I’ve been writing and he goes through combat and after the combat ends he’s withdrawn from a lot of the things he used to enjoy.
He was the life of the party forcing everyone to join him and now he’s alone with his wife who can sometimes “snap” him out of it but it’s rare she can do it.

so. i'm trying to write a character with ptsd. she experienced lots of crappy things but the most important detail is that she grew up in a very unsafe situation so she always trying to mask her feelings and it has turned into suppressive behavior. she has an acute trauma about her nest friends death. now, years later she has a new friend and she is being overly anxious and sensitive about protecting him.
can someone with ptsd help me out about this? i want to represent accurately as possible.
question: how i will show that she has ptsd bc she is good at masking her feelings?
