  • #AskAbhijit In this episode, Abhijit Iyer-Mitra talks about the tens of soldiers Pakistan is losing along its borders and the lie China is perpetrating, raising its flag within its territory but making it look like it has captured more land in Galwan sector. This is followed by Q and A.

1:08:00 there was one quote from the book Artemis (fiction by Andy Weir, author of Martian) that I read, and it goes like this:
"“It’s all part of the life-cycle of an economy. First it’s
lawless capitalism until that starts to impede growth. Next comes regulation, law
enforcement, and taxes. After that: public benefits and entitlements. Then, finally,
    overexpenditure and collapse.”
    “Wait. Collapse?”
“Yes, collapse. An economy is a living thing. It’s born full of vitality and dies
once it’s rigid and worn out. Then, through necessity, people break into smaller
economic groups and the cycle begins anew, but with more economies. Baby
economies, like Artemis is right now."
    Explains stuff pretty good.

It's the opposite now. I'm 25 and Indian living abroad. I genuinely feel I'm a little superior intellectually and physically. I live in a place where there are a lot of Chinese and Europeans. I feel there are three types of Modi supporters
    1) People like Modi because of good progress in defense, foreign policy, development etc.
    2) People who like Modi because of his soft Hindutva
    3) People who want hard Hindutva and are slightly unhappy with Modi but anyway support him
I mainly belong to #1 and I like some aspects of #2 (like Ayodhya temple and 370). My guess is that majority belong to #1 and #2. Unfortunately there is too much stuff in the media for #3 category people. This #3 stuff, people like me find it very boring. I wish people make more content for #1 and #2. At the end of the day I want India being a secular country.

60-70% of voters in India belong to #1 , you can see the signs of it in the decimation of left. Once a party or leader stops making economic sense
no matter what his ideology is the Indian voters completely discard him eventually, because even the left leaders were highly respected to be honest & less corrupt but
once the voters realized their ideology destroys economy they got wiped out. BJP will also face the same fate if they become lazy and only rely on hindutva for winning
them elections. The Indian people have seen so much poverty that they want a change

I have a question for Abhijit. What India needs to do to create original research. Most of our universities only teach the subjects with absolutely no research output. Also most of the defense projects are based on technology transfer from some other countries. How and when we can create our own research, complex products and technologies. Can we create something like DARPA or some other stuff like in Israel.

    • @anonymouslyopinionated656

can't be done in isolation... to get cutting edge research, you need an entire ecosystem in various disciplines doing original well funded research.. and you need to invest in it without expecting immediate results.. like make it part of the academic culture... then you will start seeing natural results eventually.
it will be impossible to suddenly create effective pathbreaking research in one specialized field if 20 other fields are not there creating a supporting environment.

However, there are some exaggerations in the text, as they were written in the form of poems. But again, we are not sure whether they are indeed exaggerations !

Haha LOL, Actually Abhijit gave a completely opposite story to what Rajnath singh told. According to Rajnath singh """Chinese violated the agreement they made with India on June 6, 2020, which was to abide by the premeditated Line of Actual Control. “China does not accept the customary and traditional alignment of the boundary between India and China""" So this statement by Rajnath singh is enough to prove that chinese are making in-roads into India and taking away what ever they feel like taking.... The problem is in-competent advisors who have no war experience or have no soldierly experience are taking decisions and letting china dominate border....Fact is chinese technology is unproven, inferior and copied from west. the chinese have not fought a war for decades and a war with India will dent chinese image as emerging global power... Its time Indian security forces are let to crush the chinese communits army...

AIM goes out of his way to denigrate Indian CEOs in MNCs. Truly shameful. He makes predictions and observations on issues and never apologises when he is proved wrong.

Agree with you. He has uninformed views on tech companies in the US. He’s undoubtedly very smart & I usually agree with him but his views on the US: tech companies, elections, society are incorrect.
During the 2020 US election season he kept insisting that Trump would win without any idea of the situation on the ground. And he rarely admits he’s wrong.
Net/net: he’s entertaining & I still listen to him. And it’s a free world; we can have disagreements.

I disagree with AIM. Yes it is natural for narrow minded (in every sense) people to exist in the world. But we shouldn't leave them alone and do nothing.
    1. We should never allow them to have power.
    2. We should continually try and erode their ideology and wean away their population base for the good of the world.
    3. The above must be done non-violently and any violence from them should be countered with overwhelming force so as to deter them from repeating the violence again. Because people/communities with corrupted ideologies will always use the threat of violence to get their way. That corrupted violence should receive an awe inspiring response so that debate becomes the only tool of argument.
