I went to see this in the cinema, you know a movie is engulfing everyone in it's story when the whole room was dead silent during this scene, not a single soul made a sound and you could just feel the focus on the screen, an amazing movie and even more amazing scene
The whole filmed in one shot was done amazingly, it kept everyone in constant suspense it was done masterfully and this scene at the end was such a climax I loved it
I had the same experience. You could feel the sense of doom that they were facing, facing death. It’s like the lead character had been baptized in the river.
I saw *1917* opening night and again the following weekend. This scene in the forest where the company of soldiers are gathered to listen to one of their own sing this song before they go to battle was an incredibly somber moment. The song was so beautiful in its pureness and simplicity. It made my eyes well with tears. I've been wanting and waiting for the full version of "Wayfaring Stranger" as sung by Jos Slovick in the movie to be released and now it's here. I'm so overjoyed. I want this song played at my funeral.
There are five things in a movie that make me cry. 1. Selfless sacrifice, and not just sacrificing one's life for others, but also sacrificing one's own self interest and personal desires for the greater good. (Schofield's decision to go on to deliver the message in Blake's place after he died) 2. The tragic loss of a beloved friend and loved one. (When Blake dies in Schofield's arms and he realizes he can't do anything to save him) 3. Acts of tender mercies and kindness in helping those in need. (When Schofield gives his food rations and milk to the French girl with the baby) 4. The moment when the protagonist reaches that resolve to face the impossible odds laid before them and the determination to overcome the insurmountable challenges that lie ahead no matter what the opposition. (Schofield, exhausted and faint from his journey, having found the Battalion he's been searching for, pushes on to deliver the message to the Colonel despite all that was trying to stop him) 5. The sad/happy reuniting of long lost friends and loved ones. (Schofield finds Tom's brother, Lt. Blake, and gives him the news of Tom's death along with his personal belongings) *1917* had all five... and I cried at every one.
@@Wetworks_Arclight Well said. I agree with every word. You left one out that most people probably didn't get. When Scofield is riding in the vehicle after his friend died, the camera never once moved away from his face at center screen, amidst the shallow meaningless banter of the soldiers riding with him. We saw nothing but horror and shock, as he was left to bear a great traumatic loss entirely himself. That's all that scene was about. But what a scene, if one notices it. To add to one of your points. The cherry blossoms falling on his face reminded him of his friend, just as he was about to give up in exhaustion. He got a second wind to continue on. I'm certain that particular symbolism went right over most heads.
@@organboi ABSOLUTELY! I was thinking of a few specific scenes (below) that would have fit the 4th point on the list but I couldn't pick just one so I had to summarize as best I could... 1) The scene where the truck gets bogged down in the mud and Schofield, determined to carry on with his mission, gets out and starts pushing all by himself as the other soldiers stand by and watch in disbelief. And then, inspired by Schofield's perseverance, the other soldiers help him get the truck back on the road again. 2) The scene where the cherry blossoms fall on Schofield's face while he's floating down the river reminding him of his promise to Blake. 3) When Schofield, having reached the frontline, realizes that he is running out of time decides to climb out in front of the trenches to run the distance to the Colonel's bunker despite the danger of being out in the open as the attack begins. I cheered with clenched fists and cried tears of hope and pride at each scene.
@@Wetworks_Arclight Exactly. I agree and noticed those details as well. The pushing of the truck while the others lazily stood by was yet another notable detail. Lots of people probably found this all very boring. But it's realistic and said a lot with very little. Also, the cherry blossoms on the river meant nothing to most people. One person actually found the blossoms to be a BAD thing because he claims there were no trees on the side of the river. (?!) That can't be true. And why would anyone focus on such a thing rather than the positive? People who call the film boring were LOOKING for problems. Like the plane crash. People claim he could have just run to the side rather than into the barn. Not true. He was trapped by the wall of the barn. You can see it if you look closely. People judge a film based on watching a trailer on their phones where they can't see shit. Which brings up another topic. When the film streams, millions will watch this masterpiece on their phones. When Lance Corporal Schofield arrives at the gathering of Davons company after facing the tragic loss of a friend, after an encounter with the women in basement, after the whole chase through enemy's territory dodging bullets and dead bodies and found the fellow singing this song is the most distinguished cinematic experience i ever had.
