Thanks for the video! Wanted to mention 2 things: 1. REPLACE ANY STAMPED GEARS ON THE CAMSHAFT OR OIL PUMP/INTERMEDIATE GEAR. This is one of the less commonly known things on M20s, but these are prone to exploding and causing bent valves. The intermediate gear for the oil pump on this car is stamped. Look up a picture of "m20 stamped vs sintered/cast cam gear" or something to that effect and you will see the obvious difference. I have found a total of three different parts that could have come on my 04/87 car (early i model with different cooling system and such). My understanding is that the earliest cam gear is stamped with no timing marks, the first revision is still stamped with a timing mark, and the final is a cast or sintered gear with a timing mark. My car had several owners before me, so I'm not positive what it came with, but when I pulled the covers I found a sintered cam gear and a stamped oil pump/intermediate gear (which I am replacing). There's no way to know until the covers are off since BMW never recalled them, but they would apparently replace them if the covers were off. And of course a previous owner may have replaced one or both. Just be prepared to have to order one and wait or go get it from the dealer. They're each relatively inexpensive as of right now still. Possibly over 100 right now because the cam gears are backordered in many places and prices are up, but historically it was well under 100 to buy both. 2. There's a website called realoem where we can all go and punch in the serial number or last 7 digits of our VIN to see exploded parts diagrams and part numbers for the latest revisions. This is an excellent resource for BMWs because you can make sure you have all or most of the parts you'll need for a job even before you start on it, and you can use the numbers to verify you're getting the correct part. You can find all of these seals and gaskets there. You can also find the latest sintered timing gears where there is a note to "exchange retrospectively". Happy wrenching and enjoy your cars, guys!
Great video, although having a puller can make the job easier you don’t actually need one. Once the crank bolt is removed you can use a screw driver to work the gear off, simply stick it between the gear and cover and use the driver to apply pressure from the rear of the gear, wedge it out really doesn’t take much.
Great video! I'm searching for "the perfect E30." First thing I'll do when I get it is fluids and timing belt. Since the timing belt has to come off, I'll do the front seals. Will have to watch more of your videos. Do you have a link to the seal tool you used?
ltcterry2006 thanks for the positive feedback and comments, I can’t find the link for the seal tool, but let me see if I can dig something up. Best wishes, and happy wrenching!
Great video! When you resealed the oil pan did you cut and remove the oil pan gasket and just use rtv, or did you put RTV over the pan gasket? Also, It seems like since the cover has to go straight on, it'll scrape the rtv off.
Dude you live in MD! Thanks for this video, it's made me really think about whether I want to attack this project myself or get someone to do it. Obviously, money wise it is better if I do it but it just looks like such a bitch to do.
So I have a little confusion on a when you put the lower timing cover back on. Did you use gasket maker and a paper gasket? I ask because I have gotten conflicting information online and can't get a straight answer. As of right now my plan is to use the paper gasket without gasket maker the at the bottom where the paper gasket meets the oil pan gasket use gasket maker to seal between the oil pan and the timing cover.
When using the pipe wrench to hold the crankshaft from spinning, did you have any issues using the same technique when torquing down the crankshaft bolt ?
There are a few tricks for popping the seal out. I personally use an old test light. Hammer the tip through the seal Wiggle it around deeper into the seal and then pet it out
Win Kongmuang mine was fairly easy to take off. Basically just use a rubber mallet to slowly put it back on. If you have any other questions let me know! Best of luck
Matthew Vaden I took out the AC condenser I cut the lines and unbolted it. That made it easier to access everything through the grill area. Thanks for stopping by my channel and if you have any more questions feel free to ask!
CW.VLOGS 2 out of 6 of the harmonic balancer and then the passenger side top timing cover bolt. I didn't use any pretreatment like an idiot and now I'm suffering.
Jake Clark dude that great to hear!!! Thanks you so much for the feedback! You may be interested in sharing my other vlogs with your family and friends. Thanks
she's good! I recently connected with another previous owner on R3vlimited, which blows my mind lol. apparently this guy is the one that did all the mods and stuff. How's yours running? I know your carpet looks way better than mine lol
CW.VLOGS I definitely know what you mean. I love tearing it up around the airport out here. plenty of turns, some decent straights, and sparse traffic :) nothing like it!

Helped us, not much info online about that seal
Thanks for your detailed explanation! Your video adds good value to learning. Have a good day.
Do you need to replace the Crankshaft bolt or can you reuse it? Great Video. Thanks
very helpful, I will be doing this myself soon

Did your crank seal ever leak again?

I believe I just used Rtv And nothing else to seal the oil pan up. Do a nice clean job on it and it will be seamless!
Cheers
Great video brother.. keep it up!!
Thank you!!!!
How did you torque the crank hub bolt? In the bolt it says 302.5 ft lbs my torque wrench goes up to 150 so I might have to get another 😫
The harmonic balancer puller, can that be picked up at a local auto parts store or do i need to order a specific one for the vehicle?
Grand Productions Media typically you can rent or purchase one from any auto parts store. Non specific!

The BundleOjoy yes that’s a good way to do it. Just use the gasket maker for the oil pan part only.
The BundleOjoy it never hurts to have both gasket maker and a gasket itself. Just be conservative if you use both :)
CW.VLOGS ok thanks a bunch man!
Thanks so much for putting this video out!
When using the pipe wrench to hold the crankshaft from spinning, did you have any issues using the same technique when torquing down the crankshaft bolt ?
Richard Viglucci no I used the same technique just make sure you have it snug
Is there a woodruff key holding the Crank Gear to the Crankshaft? And if so, how hard was it to remove it?
I believe there was one, it wasn't hard to remove.
just be careful with that key during the process!
Whats the part # on that bolt you say is a stretch bolt?
could you do a valve adjustment tutorial?
idrisu1 yeah next time I pull the valve cover off I'll make a video!
Is it possible to change the seal without removing the lower timing cover?
There are a few tricks for popping the seal out. I personally use an old test light. Hammer the tip through the seal Wiggle it around deeper into the seal and then pet it out
How hard is it to put back the crank gear? it seems so hard to take out I would imagine it would take some effort to put it back.
Win Kongmuang mine was fairly easy to take off. Basically just use a rubber mallet to slowly put it back on. If you have any other questions let me know! Best of luck
How did you take apart what was behind the grill for easier access? Or what is it called so I can look it up?
Matthew Vaden I took out the AC condenser I cut the lines and unbolted it. That made it easier to access everything through the grill area.
Thanks for stopping by my channel and if you have any more questions feel free to ask!
Thanks man. Broke a couple of bolts so I'm trying to get in there to get them out without rage selling my car haha
Matthew Vaden which bolts did you break
CW.VLOGS 2 out of 6 of the harmonic balancer and then the passenger side top timing cover bolt. I didn't use any pretreatment like an idiot and now I'm suffering.
Is this the m20 motor?
Jake Clark yes the m20! Good luck :) it’s a fun car to work on. Just take your time :)
CW.VLOGS the instructions were great! Everything is working like new.
Jake Clark dude that great to hear!!! Thanks you so much for the feedback!

good video! too bad we don't have the same engines (M42), but good video 👍💩
Levy3Poop thanks man, how's ruby?
she's good! I recently connected with another previous owner on R3vlimited, which blows my mind lol. apparently this guy is the one that did all the mods and stuff. How's yours running? I know your carpet looks way better than mine lol
Levy3Poop mine is running great. Loving the nice weather, smashing down back roads listening to my exhaust
CW.VLOGS I definitely know what you mean. I love tearing it up around the airport out here. plenty of turns, some decent straights, and sparse traffic :) nothing like it!
im related to you...
its alex if you didnt know
how did you get the intro
IzDaMagic I used blender! Have you tried it yet?
CW.VLOGS nope
CW.VLOGS its alex
Seems better to leave it alone if there's no issue lmao..
