You guys are such a cute married couple. They way Colleen let Erik tell his WHOLE story without a single interruption, and the way Erik apologized in the end and took accountability was great.
I feel like arguing is healthy when both parties go in with an open mind to hear the other person out and when the person in the wrong apologizes. I wish I grew up around an environment like that.
    You guys are great.

My mom is a school nurse and was my school nurse for 7 years. There was nothing better than seeking safety and comfort in her clinic. I even peed my pants one time in the 8th grade and we just laughed and laughed. She still tells me how kids big and little will come in and ask for just 10 minutes of quiet time on a cot.

I totally understand Colleen's anxiety when she hasn't heard from Erik. One night my husband was out of town for work. I tried texting him when I knew he should have been done working and for a while he wasn't answering. Then suddenly he started answering but with just one word sentences, which is something he normally doesn't do. My brain went to, this isn't my husband, someone has his phone somehow and is just answering these questions so I think it is him. I finally got to the point where I messaged him and said my anxiety brain is going crazy, please call me so I can hear your voice and know it is you. Thankfully within like a minute of me sending the message, he called.

The nostalgia that came rushing back when Erik mentioned the school nurse’s office/infirmary. My school was small so the “nurse” was the secretary & the “infirmary” was a large filing closest with 2 cots in the middle. In the most unexplainable way, the metal framed cots covered in paper with the fleece blanket brought so much comfort & safety.

Story time: I remember going to the nurse in 8th grade and demanding that my mom come and pick me up. I thought I had to poop and I NEVER pooped at school, so I pretended to be sick. My mom picked me up and I told her to take me home so I could poop and then bring me back in time for play rehearsal after school (I was the female lead). My mom refused because I wasn’t really sick and because we lived in Montecito and I went to SB jr. high and if you know the area it’s considered a far drive (it’s literally ten minutes but she wasn’t having it). Well for some reason I was PISSED (wait for it) and I told her never mind, I’d just hold it and probably have internal damage and she’d have to live with it. I went back to school and got home after rehearsal only to find out that sometimes when you’re bitchy and feel like you need to poop, you’re really just getting your period for the first time!
It’s the only time I remember lying to the school nurse, just so I wouldn’t have to poop at school!

I had same experience as Erik with the elementary school nurse's room thing. Was a small, darkish room, with one "diner-booth" bed thing, and if I was not feeling well (faked it few times cause wanted to get away from class and socialising) they'd ask symptoms and then usually just say I should lie down, relax or sleep on the bed for an hour or more. I also experienced it as relaxing, just being able to take a break from life for a bit. Also, when I was younger in daycare, they didn't have a specific room for this type thing, and they just let me sleep in a very small, cramped closet on like a blanket and pillow and that was also quite nice lol

colleen, when you read my comment from last week's episode, i lowkey freaked out to my partner with my mouth gasped open that you were mentioning me on the podcast (i adore and love you/this podcast), haha but i just wanted to say that i definitely did not mean to imply that you are or act very different on or off camera, i just thought it was funny (and cute) the way some of your reactions to erik's responses were a bit silly like when you said "ooo sexy" in a smirky way, and it made him wonder if you were recording based on that.
but nonetheless, i love you both. and your gifts to erik were the most thoughtful, sweet, and kind way to celebrate him and his existence. you both are so lucky to have each other and it's been one of the loveliest honors to watch you, your family, and your love for each other grow throughout these past many years :')

I remember many times where I avoided having to speak in front of the class or present something by saying I didn’t feel well the class period before and I would just lay on these hard plastic cot like beds and wait for time to pass. I’d either go back once I’d avoided everything I wanted to or would get my parents to come get me. I obviously went there for real reasons too, but definitely more for just a break as Erik said!

As for the school nurse’s office: I went through a phase in the 2nd grade where I went to the nurse’s office almost everyday for a month. I had major anxiety because another student had vomited in class once after lunch. I was terrified it would happen again, and my solution was to get away from the classroom after lunch by saying that I didn’t feel well. Sometimes I would just hang out in the nurse’s office for awhile. Sometimes a guardian would come pick me up.
I absolutely remember the paper thermometers and the small cot with plastic covering it for easy clean up. Once when I was visiting, a boy had a tick on his scalp. The nurse cut a bunch of his hair off, then removed the tick before flushing it down the toilet.

I'm old but we had 2 of those vinyl table beds and a skeleton named 'boney joney' in the nurses office. The nurse wouldn't call your parents either unless you were vomiting or had a fever, so I'd take the thermometer probe cover off (the disposable thing they'd put on the thermometer that hurt) rub the thermometer in the blanket, then shake it down (old school mercury thermometers) to around 101° put the probe cover back on and back in my mouth before the nurse came back to check the thermometer so I'd be able to go home! Oh the good old days! I still own an old mercury thermometer! When my kids were in school the nurse would normally just call me 99% of the time to pick up my kid and the other 1% of the time the nurse would only call if my kid(s) went to the nurse twice.

People think school nurses just put bandaid on boo boos but we do so much more, we are counselors, janitors, surrogate mommies. I had 5 diabetic students at one point, we do tube feedings, dispense medications, give hygiene talks, hearing and vision screenings, teach cpr.....I won't bore you with the rest. My neighbor called and offered to buy me shoes. My mom explained I had them but refused to wear them. As for the school nurse, they had a desk and chair, no bed and you had to have a temperature to go home. My brothers taught me to stop in the bathroom and drink hot water on the way. We lived close enough and had to walk home.

In middle school I was a nurse assistant a have a few stories. Disposable thermometers where like laminated paper. We played with those all day trying to give ourselves a fever. There where kids we had to hand their medicine to. But I was never a patient at my middle school. Or elementary school. But in high school I heard a girl say she would take a nap in the nurse office when on her period. So I started to go every month on running day if I was on my period. I was given a heating pad and would take a nap. Back to my middle school nursing assistant stories. I had a guy friend in middle school and then found out he was a nurse assistant for another period. And the nurse would say we where her children so we called eachother brothers and sisters. And we would leave notes for eachother in the nurse office. Even though he was like a best friend of mine at the time, so we talked and hangout outside the nurses office. When I went to high school I moved cities and lost touch with 99% of my friends. He was one of them. Back in MySpace days he didn't have one and we didn't have cellphones either. But I guess 10th grade he made a MySpace found me and added me. From the day I seen his friend request till this day we had not stop talking. We actually have 2 kids together and the 3rd on the way. Now I call him my husband!

Yes to the nurses offices having vinyl almost booth like beds but I also stayed on a chair I don’t remember ever laying down. The thermometer had a thin plastic cover that were so sharp … my parents used to use them at home too.
I also make worse case scenarios for everyone I care about.

Hi! When u guys were talking about the school nurse I can relate so much to Colleen. I’m in middle school and I get out at 3 and sometimes my mom is a little late, and I think she got in a car crash or something. Also with calling my mom and she had to be there right away

I agree with the pop up tent! We live in Florida by the beach and keep a tent in our car, they are frustrating to fold on a windy beach and after a few uses of ours it is broken as well. We bought a new better one with rods attached but they pop into place and fold way easier!!!

Colleen you’re talking about catastrophizing!! My therapist teaching me this concept was life changing. Look up cognitive distortions and it’ll make a lot more sense for you! And I spent an ample amount of time at the nurses office like Erik so I can totally relate there too! Love you guys ❤

my school doesn’t have a nurse 😭 instead we have office ladies who, are very nice and sweet, but definitely are not qualified to be nurses. if you’re injured they’ll give you either a ziplock bag of ice or when i was in elementary school they would give you a frozen sponge in a bag that you would have to take back to the office when you were done with it. in elementary they would have these horrendously uncomfortable weird bed yoga matt things to lay on if you weren’t feeling well but now in hs they just let you go home. my school is kinda weird tho bc it’s charter so it’s all in one building so hearing stories from other schools is always so fascinating to me

I remember when I went to the nurse in elementary school I would always be so stressed out that my mom would be mad at me. Like I would have a fever or hurt my foot, etc. and for some reason I would have full on panic attacks that when my mom would come pick me up and see that I was at the nurse she would yell at me and be mad. It was so strange now thinking back because its not like she would yell at me outside of school, so I wonder why I would think that.

Omg yeah about the school getting out early on fridays, my middle school finished at 3:30 every day and on fridays it ended at 3:15 like “wow we get to leave school 15 minutes before we usually do that’s crazy!”

OMG YEESS! my elementary school had a full on couch, pillow, blankets, saltine crackers and ginger ale in the office and when you were sick they would turn the lights completely off in the one corner. it was HEAVEN 😍

My school nurse was legit the worst woman on planet earth. I was at the same school for 14 years and she made me cry at least once a year. Once, I went to her office with the most EXCRUCIATING period pains in the hopes that she would give me something to help. We were only allowed to go to the nurse during lunch so she was supposed to take a different lunch period. When I got there, her office door was closed with a sign saying ‘I’m out for lunch’ on it but I could hear her laughing and gossiping with someone inside. I knocked and knocked for five minutes but she ignored me so eventually I left. Later, during class time, I asked my teacher to go back and when I did, the nurse wasn’t there. I stood outside and waited until she got back. When she did, she shouted at me for five minutes for being out of class (even though I had a letter from my teacher) and when I told her that I came during lunch but she was talking to someone else and didn’t open the door, she shouted at me more. She threatened to give me detention for talking back and send me to the principles office. She then refused to give me medicine (which is against school rules) and didn’t allow me to lie down on one of the plastic beds. When I asked her to phone my mom to come and get me (since she wouldn’t get me any medicine), she refused to do so and told me to stop being so dramatic. She was absolutely horrible

OMG! I went to the nurses office all the time during elementary school. I completely forgot about this. In elementary school my mom had breast cancer and I constantly would say I was sick so I could go home and sit with her. Everyone just let me go all the time. I loved the nurses office. It had the vinyl bed and crackers.

I have a sun shade in my car that is the same type of pop-up material. My husband ALWAYS gets so frustrated at this shade when he drives. He’s just thrown it into the back seat on several occasions…he denies bending it but I believe he did when he couldn’t put it together the first time. 😂😂😂

The no-shoe thing totally makes sense. It is in theory really good for you, BUT not in modern times where there are many factors that take away from it. Asphalt, broken glass, the evolution our feet went through that isn't something you can just 'reverse', etc.
