As of the release of this video, I have not yet given the kayak a real sea-trial. I just wanted to make sure it floated on its lines and I fit into it OK. I'll report back when I have had more time to test the design.
A youtube Christmas present? Lovely video once again. This is one of the absolutely best RUclips channels I know, impressive skills, beautiful boats and great paddling. The Microbootlegger looks good in the water to. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all from Denmark.
Nick, have you written or spoken elsewhere about your selection of this particular design for SOF construction? curious as to why you chose this hull rather than a Greenland- or Aleutian-style (or inspired) design. Thanks for the videos! Really enjoyed the series.
I built this design because I like it. I had some ideas about how to do things a little differently from traditional designs. I thought this design was a good basis for these experiments. I get a lot of inspiration from traditional designs, but I keep in mind that the needs of a modern kayaker are not necessarily exactly aligned with those of a traditional hunter. This design does share a lot of characteristics of a traditional kayak, it just looks a bit different.
Great vid. Looks like a fine result to all the guesswork put into a new design. Interested in your sea trials proper and what design changes happen as you make 'em. Still haven't settled exactly on what I'm going to make-when that time comes. Truly enjoy watching your processes and how they evolve and I have great respect for your developed expertise and sharing it here. Thanks.
Kind time Nick. Always an epic and exciting moment when the boat touches the water for the first time. I always cover champagne. :-) Congratulations on completing the work!
I have several racing designs www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guillemot/catalog/boat_building_plans/racing_kayak_plans The "Mystery" is quite fast, the "Yukon" is a good long-distance racing designs or for those who just don't have the power to keep a faster design going at top speed.
Skin on Frame is probably one of the easiest ways to make a kayak. It is much easier and quicker than strip-building. I think a strip-built kayak is nicer in many ways, but skin on frame has its own advantages.
Hi Peter, I didn't have any added flotation at the time of this launch. Since then I have added some float bags into each end. I would recommend float bags for any skin-on-frame kayak. A sea-sock wouldn't be a bad idea as well.
SOF is a very quick build relative to most other methods, creating a comparatively lightweight boat. Maybe not the best boat in all circumstances, but a really decent kayak, quickly and easily.
Splendid. I bet it feels good to have it seaworthy (or riverworthy at least anyway). Looking forward to the next build. Also hoping to get a paddle build on film someday!
We'll check out the seaworthiness in the future. I should be starting the next build pretty soon. I'll be needing to make some paddles this winter as well.
Superb! Travels though the water nicely, with barely a ripple. It will be good to see how it goes in the rough stuff, with a cross wind. Oh yes, nicely edited video too. I hope making it didn't detract from the first paddle! Nick (UK).
I have not tried to come up with a sailing kit. I would probably start with something like the CLC SailRig: www.clcboats.com/shop/boats/wooden-sailboat-kits/touring-kayaks/clc-sailrig-kayak-canoe-sailing-rig.html
Hi Hernani, I don't have plans for this skin-on-frame version yet, but if you want to build a strip-planked kayak, I do have plans for this design in strips: www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guillemot/catalog/boat_building_plans/microbootlegger_sport_plans
I have no experience with plastic physics but my guess would be that you would have to renew the skin every 5 or so years if you want it to be fully transparent, depending on how much it sits in the sun. If you accept it being milky probably much longer. How would you solve the seam? You can't really sew it.

Hi Nick. A truely inspiring launch. Can't wait for the sea-trial. A truely nice piece of work. Congratulations.
Beautiful boat! Do you have plans for this skin on frame kayak?
Very pretty boat, and beautiful conditions to be out paddling it.
good one Nick. cant wait for the sea trail. cheers

That is one classy ride, nicely done!
Waterline paint job looks spot on . . . post a video after Christmas and we'll be able to tell how many pieces of pie you had.

Thanks again! Would love to hear more about those innovations and now that the boat is finished, or maybe once she's had some time in the water.
It's been a minute, have you sea-trialed this one yet?
did any water get in ?
Nope.
thanks for taking the time to answer my question!!
That's alot of work, making multiple trips for the Camera, just to give us the whole experience. Thank you
I probably spent more time moving cameras around than I actually spent paddling. It just makes the video more visually interesting.
That's exactly what I was thinking. And a whole bunch of cameras too. Thanks for making the effort.
Excellent as usual, also a very nice editing job. This video is beautiful to look at.
Great video Nick, and another beautiful boat.
Great vid.

Nice video. Nice master, I want buy your book on amazon
Very nice Nick. The worst thing about paddling in cold like that is the walk too and from the water!
I enjoyed every second of this video. Congratulations on such a beautiful and inspiring boat build and thank you for sharing the experience with us.
What a wonderful project! Thank you for letting us see the whole process.
Wonderful. You are living the dream sir, with that shop and home right there on the water. Well done.
Are you planning on designing a racing kajak?
Keep up the great work.

Very light! Superb!

lovely design and execution
Вы не считали, сколько лодок уже уплыло от этого причала?
Thanks Nick, fantastic series!! Maybe a dumb question, but I didn't see you put any buoyancy in the boat. Will it sink when full of water? Peter
Hi Peter, I didn't have any added flotation at the time of this launch. Since then I have added some float bags into each end. I would recommend float bags for any skin-on-frame kayak. A sea-sock wouldn't be a bad idea as well.
Other than tradition, what are the pros for Skin-on-frame vs strip and/or stitch-n-glue?
SOF is a very quick build relative to most other methods, creating a comparatively lightweight boat. Maybe not the best boat in all circumstances, but a really decent kayak, quickly and easily.
Relaxing video.
I'm jealous
Wow!! AWESOME

I enjoy your videos very much. I would like to build the Petrel Play. Have you ever tried to design a sailing kit for it?

Nick Schade perfect. Thank you.
I want the plans, i need replace my Guillemot S&G by Nick Schade (2006)
Hi Hernani, I don't have plans for this skin-on-frame version yet, but if you want to build a strip-planked kayak, I do have plans for this design in strips: www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guillemot/catalog/boat_building_plans/microbootlegger_sport_plans
NO, strip not have condicion to work.
Unfortunately, I don't have this kayak design ready to built in anything other than strip built.
Have you thought of building a version of this coated with clear vinyl?
I have. I've seen pictures of a few SOF kayaks with clear vinyl and it looks great. I wonder how well it holds up over time.
I have no experience with plastic physics but my guess would be that you would have to renew the skin every 5 or so years if you want it to be fully transparent, depending on how much it sits in the sun. If you accept it being milky probably much longer. How would you solve the seam? You can't really sew it.
I believe people just use vinyl glue for the seam. Probably pretty easy.
I suspect it gets scratched up pretty quickly and becomes less transparent.
