Good review of aquarium glass cleaning. Tip: allow the clean cotton/clean cloth soaked in 5% clear white vinegar to remain touching the glass for 15-60mins (longer the better very old thick deposits) - this will allow the vinegar to react with the deposits completely softening them/dissolving them. Afterwards use any scraper (credit card, plastic, blade) and it will remove the softened deposit easily. You may even notice that the deposit will simply come off by wiping it off with the cotton/cloth without any scraping. To keep the vinegar soaked cotton/cloth/paper on the side of the glass from slipping down, you can use a clothing hanging clip, magnets, or carpentry/builder clamps. However, the vinegar soaked paper will not need this support as it will hold onto the glass by itself. Fully agree that as water evaporates away the hardness (Calcium or Sodium salts) will remain in water. There is some more fun stuff to what is happening here ... With freshwater and saltwater tanks, the hardness deposits (calcium carbonate deposits) can also buildup because of temperature and pH influence on the dissolved Calcium (which is in hard water) causing the Calcium to combine with Carbonic acid (CO2 carbon dioxide from fish/plant respiration forms carbonic acid in the tank water). The carbonic acid can transform to carbonate or bicarbonate in the tank water depending on the pH/temp. Calcium and carbonate will then form the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) deposit on the glass over time.

yes white viengar works really good for harder stains you can leave the vinegar for few hours before wiping it off.. you can use sphagnum moss/peat moss in filter to soften hard water too..if not using RO water

I would highly recommend "Stainless Steel Scraper Cleaner" for this job. It takes shaving blades and can be reused, so no cuts on our hands. I bought it from amazon India.
