The Tejanos (Hispanic Texans) who lived near and among these new settlers fell in love with the polka rhythm and instruments then adapted them to make music in Spanish. I remember listening to it growing up in Texas and Mexicans were ambivalent towards or despised it. They did not consider it Mexican but a weird American music. I lived in Sweden recently. For the most part, it's an extremely pleasant, well-organised, clean and efficient country.
