    We unexpectedly got an amazon parrot, and we NEVER had had any bird before, but he was in a very dire situation being abused, and you don't just leave an innocent animal in need. My arms have some deep scars since he was very afraid of us the first year. Now, eight years later he is our love bug, and he is outside his cage for 8 -12 hours a day since I work from home. Rocky is 22 years old, and he will be with us until he dies. Period.

    My bird actually doesn’t like to go outside her cage at first I thought she was sick or nervous and I went to the vet and he said that she wasn’t sick or nervous

    birds i recommend as beginner budgies, linnies, rose bourkes, parrotlet, cockatiel, pionus. birds that are a little bit bigger but i think could still be good beginners Hahns macaw or a Minnie macaw, green check, senegals and if your willing to put in the effort caiques

    I just adopted a blue crown con cure. He a screamer he really loud . I ignore this behavior but could use advice. He was also on a seed diet which I will start changing. I bought pellets, veggie, less fruit. Any advice will be appreciated.

      That’s great!! I was about to suggest the diet part. You’d be surprised how much that can alter your parrots mood and behavior. When do you notice he yells and what are you doing when it happens?

      theBirdBae He yells when I leave the room. When people comes over. He yells all day longg. I believe the previous owner responded when he yells. He has a high pitch. Maybe some of the problems is because he in a new environment. I just had he for a couple of days but I notice he was yelling at the other home that probably why they re- homes him.

      Great parrot, good talkers/mimic sound, affectionate and playful. Part of the poicephalus species like Senegal Parrots. I was going to get a Jardine parrot 🦜 instead of a Senegal. But I couldn’t pass up on Elfie haha.

      green cheeks are great, some can be a little nippy, buy one hand-weaned, and from caring breeders. the only other negative (if its a negative) they can want TONS of attention. so be willing to carry them around with you.

    So I'm thinking of getting a parrot in a few years.(I'm 14 so I'll probably get it around 15 16 or 17) and I want to save up. I want to get either a meyers,Senegal,or brown headed. How much did you pay for your bird and how much do you reccomend to budget for initial costs. Also I have school and sports but after and before I have time to feed it in the morning and play and hang put with it in the evening

      Elfie was rehomed and I got him for $600 I’ve seen Senegal’s around that range up to $1000. Your cage will be $200-$400 for that sized bird, toys another $30-$60, avian vet check up ~$200, and maybe a travel cage (if needed) ~$100

      @@parrotsco.3224 Ok thank you. I wish I could volunteer at a rescue to get some sort of bird experience but the closest one is 63 miles away. Do you think trying to get a job at a pet store or a bird store would be a good idea

      I would say so, I would make sure to look into learning about the species in detail to be sure it’s the bird for you including the worst screams/noise it can get + things unique tot he species :)

    could a ringneck be considered as a first parrot choice? I found a 1.5 years old wild ringneck in my local pet store.. however I 've many doubts if I would be ever capable of taming him

      unless its young, (under a year) id skip a wild bird for a first bird. otherwise you might get discouraged when training. this happened with a "princess of whales" i had before i landed on my first bird. (pun intended)
      Ringnecks, or Alexandrines (my first bird) are absolutely excellent first birds, especially when hand raised.

      It’s not so much about just being outside the cage but engaging with your bird/spending quality time. So it doesn’t necessarily matter when as long as you have time to spend with it :)

    There is no beginner parrot. If you want a Macaw, just get one. Most importantly is the research and future planning of/for the parrot. If you get a parrot that you do not want in the first place, you will regret it. Do tons of research for the parrot you want and talk to a person who owns one.

      @@melikepringles3029 no, there are only such things as birds that are easier to keep and there are birds that are more difficult to keep. Just because you've never had a bird before doesn't mean you can't get a cockatoo, just needs research and it needs to fit your life style.

      I would say yes that’s most peoples situation, plenty of toys/mental stimulation while you’re away, and if you live with anyone else who can also give attention while you’re away or if they get home before you, that would be a plus :)

    Hey man i am 15 and am looking to buy a parrot this will be my first pet after years and also my first bird / parrot at all but i am looking to purchase a ringneck i just want to know if there’s anything that i need to look out for your advice whether it’s a good bird/ first bird at all because i want to get a good talking parrot that isn’t too expensive and hard to look after make suggestions if you can aswel thanks

      IRNs are amazing! That being said there is no one bird that isn't hard to look after. They require daily attention and some training/mental stimulation to prevent behavioral problems. If you will be too busy to give quality time to your parrot or want a low maintenance pet I would look toward maybe getting a cat? If you really want to own a parrot, I would definitely do research to make sure it will be a good fit and you can commit long term. They live anywhere from 20-50 years in captivity :)

      A good small lower maintenance bird is a budgie. They also can learn to talk (males more so than females) and actually hold the record for largest vocabulary from a bird

      They are FANTASTIC parrots, but beware...they can be very independent. Some simply dont like to be handled and rather just be around you in general. So keep that in mind...but regardless they make wonderful pets.
