    Great idea, would like to mention when having a second battery in the box, place a piece of plastic where the terminals could touch the case. This will stop the spare battery from shorting out and going flat. A great project.

    Some 9v batteries might explode if you open them, use thick gloves and a protective mask. The blast is strong enough to blind you

      you could glue some plastic in to cover the metal. Cut a sheet from a plastic bottle for example.

      why woul not short it? i mean, yeah theres a protective layer i'm sure, but the way he placed that spare battery is a tight fit, and you know when you rub 2 metal surfaces one to another, it will scratch the surface resulting in the can may loose its protective layer -if any- and will short it.. not immediatly, maybe never, but if you constantly changing the batteries, it may happen

    a 9 v battery has only ~400 mah. This wont even charge modern phones half way up.
    It better to just use the car charger and go get either 2 6v lamp batteries (i know those thinks are huge) or just take 6 AA batteries.
    There are even some 12v batteries for remote controlled cars that are rechargeable and will charge your phone up more than just two times

    what a great idea!
    BUT.
    If you do not put anything non conductive on your battery poles,
    they are going to stay in contact with the metal of the box and
    even in a few days you may have a surprise when you wish to use it!
    good luck!

    Couldn't you connect the second battery in parallel? Also, if the car charger desires 12V, would it be more efficient to offer it the series combination of 18V or starve it with 9V? Cool video, I especially liked what you did with the through-hole soldering. Thank you.

    • @americahater2
      @americahater2 8 лет назад

      No, that wouldn't work. It wouldn't no, but its the Mexican's fault you know that. I to know that.

    • @schabingcraft
      @schabingcraft 8 лет назад

      it depends on the exact ic on the board. if the IC can handle 18V, i would say that its more efficient, especially because you can discharge the batteries much further and the voltage is still sufficient to power your charger

    • @Nefertems
      @Nefertems 8 лет назад +2

      You can connect two batteries in parallel in a car, but it requires a diode between to bias them in one direction (or relay or "battery isolator"). If you don't, while the circuit is unpowered the batteries will kill one another trying to charge each other in a sort of resonant circuit; dissipating the energy through the internal resistances and connections. I imagine you could do the same thing by salvaging a schottsky diode from just about anything and putting it between the two 9Vs thus giving you nearly twice the energy at the same 9V.

      Charge your phone 100% and reach your destination, take some time and make a new charger at your current location. Follow it or else buy a 10000 mah powerbank.
      Never try to even take it through the security check in. It would be a serious problem on your end. Because these wiring and cabling on small scale self made devices are strictly prohibited.

    9v batteries have lower capacity (about 800-900mAh afaik) than most cell phone batteries, so they will charge your cell phone up to 30-40% and keep it alive few more hours. I would use pack of 6x1.5 v batteries for such DIY charger, alkaline ones have capacity up to 2400 - 2600mAh , which allows you to completely charge most of average and popular cell phones. I can't remember exactly , what voltage is needed for LM317 to work normally, probably pack of 4x1.5v will also work.

  • @JustCrysisJack
    @JustCrysisJack 8 лет назад +43

    Warning!
    Your Phone has a Maxinum Voltage of 3.7V - 3.8V
    And your Original Charger is a Output Voltage of 5V
    Your Powerbank is a Charging Voltage of 9V
    Its Nice. The Your Phone charge up faster, but it may happen that your Phone Battery may [ LEAK, EXPLODE ] because its overcharge at a High Voltage. I Recomanded you to just buy Real POWERBANK for $1 - $3 in any Shops. You can also buy anything you want. You can also make this PowerBank in your House but your Battery must be in a Low Voltage of 5V
    I am telling you for your SAFETY. Thank You!

      +Dejan Brice Step down amp? There are actual stories of phones exploding from circuits such as these, plus the phones don't actually charge from this, despite the voltage input. The thing is, the amperage going into the phone isn't enough to charge it, and would result in a excessive buildup in voltage and in return ruin your phone. Because car chargers usually always have an input of 12v and a decent amperage, the circuit is built to handle THAT and only that amount of wattage input.

    • @hadihassu400

      I apperetiate it man but why is the circuit for ? It is for converting 12 to 5 or 4 volts the car gives an out put of 12 volts the circuit in the carger converts it to 5 or smothing thats y roman used the circuit and iphone and any other smart phone when dectects an overvoltage and undervoltage it disconnects the charger immediatly by itself

    Seems like a fun project to do as a proof-of-concept, but nothing you should use on a regular basis. Thing is, the cheaper you make it and the less experienced you are, the more that can go really wrong. I'm not saying that you shouldn't try it though. When you want to try this, I'd recommend having a bit of basic electrical knowledge, unlike some other people in the comments.

  • @vladislavdamqnov2072

      Then this is completely useless. I`ll be going through the 9V like freshly baked bread. And they`re not rechargeable, so that makes it suck even more. I`d just use a boost converter and a 2000mAh 3.7V rechargeable battery and the end game will be much more feasible

  • @hmax1591
    @hmax1591 6 лет назад +1

    is a good idea. I do worry about the charger being designed for 12 volt auto and you are using 9v battery. I wonder if the charger works to its best. I would like to built something like this but have a rechargeable 9v and be able to recharge. The only thing I will question is whether is practical. After reading the milli amp capacity of 9v batteries I find it's like 500 milli amps, that is not very useful for charging a cell phone. Use AA batteries with high milli amp rating to build a better charger.

    You should line any metal case containing batteries with a non-conductive surface for safety.

    9volt is an over voltage and a risk to device or that metal box the fact that even works is kind of surprising yet it's believable maybe because the cheap car charger take me to run off 12 volt and convert it to 5 volts what is really cheap car chargers will only give you something less than half an amp so if you have anything modern it won't even charge it

    i would like to add a " " "CAUTION" " " to this video. 9 volt batteries are powerful enough to start a fire if left in a dead short condition. putting a 9v battery in the storage position inside of a metal tin as shown in the video is asking for trouble unless the batteries contacts are sufficiently insulated from the metal of the tin case. if the batteries contact points were to come in contact with the tin surface and create a short across the battery, it will cause the tin and battery to become extremely hot, this could lead to burns and or fire, or even rupturing of the battery itself. make sure you take the necessary precautions when putting a battery in a metal container. or storing them with metal items.

    How about a battery pack to power a small digital projector (12V/25Amp), since phone battery charger packs don't provide enough power to operate a small portable projector. Likely an old large torch battery or small marine battery should work fine.

    In my opinion this circuit it's dangerous for the devices that you charge in the long period.
    You are using a Buck Converter designed for a 12V-24V input and you use a 9V battery...this leads that you have a 5 Volts in output,as it should be, but the output current have a big ripple and this mean that the devices will be damaged in the long period time...specially the batteries!!

  • @MochaTater

    Is the reason you put that piece of plastic on the bottom so there was a barrier between the circuits and the metal? So that way no stray electrical signals traveled through the device?

  • @flowerlover2404
    @flowerlover2404 7 лет назад

    This is more simple than this:
    You need: Car charger, 9-volt battery snap, 9-volt battery, charger, (any color) duct tape, tools
    First use one tool and then remove the front part of the car charger. Now remove all parts of the car charger.
    Use a 9-volt battery snap. The + (red wire) should be from the center of the car charger. The - (black wire) should be the one from the silver ends on the car charger.
    Now use the (any color) duct tape and then tape it around between the red wire and the part of the car; also same as the black wire (between it and the car charger part). Carefully use gloves to protect you from electricity.
    Connect the 9-volt battery (Kodak MAX, ShopRite, Kirkland, etc.) to the 9-volt battery snap. Use a knife and cut out the empty, 29 cm. height jewelry box. Use the (any color) duct tape and tape it from the 9-volt battery and the front of the car charger.
