VERY IMPRESSED that your brother picked up that in this epsiode Peco is actually Kong's hero. Most people assume that he is Smile's (which we see this episode he is Smile's hero too) but that by showing such astonishing growth, pure joy, and overwhelming talent he acts as Kong's hero in this instance. AS IMPRESSED in your analysis of the plane at the end, and how Kong is able to let go for probably the first time ever. I love Kong's growth in E8. In the beginning he still has the last layer of arrogance; "I'll get in to the top 4 and go to Nationals". He no longer expects to win the tournament easily, but takes a top 4 spot as a sure thing. Against Peco, he sheds that layer and realizes his arrogance. Kong recognizes his perspective, while very different from E1, still had a lot of growing to do. With that, he knows h'se is not leaving Japan anytime soon- and that it is truly a blessing in disguise. Kong embraces his journey in Japan, and no longer views it as means to and end (return to China). He has grown to enjoy his life here, and respect the players and people. Kong is definitely one of my favorite characters, and a very inspiring story. One must always look within first to grow, and learn to appreciate the journey.

The fact that you still remember that Kong quote is awesome. The way I interpret the part where Smile runs away is that Smile doesn't play Ping Pong because he cares about winning-- Ping Pong is just his support system because he has nothing else in his life (and no one else besides the people who connect with him through Ping Pong). He's going along with what coach Koizumi wants him to achieve because coach Koizumi has become like his father figure, and now he's abandoning him too. So he runs away, but then realizes he has nothing to run away to, as well. (I actually don't know if he sees Peco or if that has anything to do with him heading back-- I assumed that was just stylistic editing)
