thank you to simon, his writers and editors. i am a relative of the surviving Donnelly’s, who is often left feeling like my ancestors not only never saw an justice for what happened to them; but also left feeling like my ancestors were extremely misunderstood. thank you so much for acknowledging that the Donnellys where in fact the town scapegoat, and seeing that in the lead up to their deaths they were being blamed for anything and everything that happened around them. i live in southern ontario, and if i mention my family relation, i’m ether met with people who are unaware of who the Donnelly’s are, or tell me that’s not something i should be proud of. as the perception of the family here is nothing good. to see the facts represented here, and to see simon and his writer sympathetic to the survivors, eases my mind that it’s okay to be open about my family history. and that i can in fact be proud of my lineage, like i have been since my childhood. thank you for bringing this tale to the masses, and not solely painting them as horrible people.
Are you the great granddaughter of Patrick or Jenny? Ever since I learned about the massacre in school in the late 80's I found it fascinating how a whole town of supposed religious people looked the other way at such a mass murder. Hell even Steve Earle did, as an American musician who had some of his best tours through Ontario found it fascinating and wrote the song "Justice In Ontario" name checking your ancestors and how there was no justice served.
@@msmoniz I’m actually the great great great granddaughter of Jenny, on my mothers’ mother’s side. while i know that not all members of the family were innocent people per say, a lot of the things they were guilty of were simply the law of the land at time, even under current canadian laws squatters rights are a thing. they were also accused of many things that couldn’t be proved in a court of law then, let alone by today’s standards. their wrong doings aside, they did not deserve their fate, nor did they deserve their lack of justice for the crimes committed against them. thank you for bringing “justice in ontario” to my attention, i was previously unaware of its existence but look forward to adding it to my classic rock rotation. i’m also glad to see that someone learned about this piece of history in a classroom; as opposed to only learning it from your parents and then books (and simon). this was not in the curriculum taught to any of my brothers or myself. my mother and her husband were not taught about residential schools while they were in school, my mom grew up with one a few blocks from her high school, and never once was taught anything about it. it wasn’t until i was in high school and asked her about the mohawk institute, that she learned of their existence, and how close one was.
@@amandapettigrew5471 Oh I know how stories get spun and some times simple things get made into monstrous acts. I'm sure north of 90% of the people in that time in that area did questionable things but for random or specific reasons, your ancestors became the convenient scapegoats. I was rooting for the Donnelys from the start. They genuinely seemed like a good family that didn't take slack from anyone. They only ever protected themselves and their land. Not to mention that they took a stand against religious hate despite knowing this would cause animosity between them and other Catholics. I was so devastated when they had their lives taken away from them and the way the trial went about manipulating poor Johnny. Mary was the black sheep who I could say was the only one who was a bad person since her greediness literally prevented her family from getting justice. I was hoping to hear that William took out his own well-deserved justice on the perpetrators and if he did, i'd certainly not say a word about it. It's nice to know that such a unique and powerful family has descendants to carry on their name and legacy. As a teacher in Australia, this is a story that i would definitely tell my students about in history class, I'm also curious to see if my cousins in Canada know this story
I didn't really have a problem with it until the last third or so of it, and then the repeated violins got very grating. I still watched the whole vid, but that bit with the violins repeating the same very short motif got annoying fast. That part was in the first 2/3rds or so of it, so it wasn't a problem then.

Regarding the Donnellys being allowed to keep half the land they farmed: if they did the same thing today, they would still have the same result (or possibly get to keep the entire plot) and legally so, at least where I live. Essentially, if you're the one taking care of a plot of land, farming it, mowing it, maintaining it, even paying the tax on it, etc. for a long enough period of time while the legal owner does nothing with the land, you become the legal owner. This applies to houses as well, iirc. The general idea is that, to prevent property from being abandoned and going to waste, it's better to redistribute it to someone who will take care of it and do something productive with it. It's a very tricky loophole to make work, but it's how my parents' new neighbor actually got the house across the street. The previous owner died and the family left it so neglected that there were wild animals living in it, and the new guy, whose brother lived next door, went in and did all the cleaning, maintenance and repairs.
I'd lose my mind if that happened to my land. I had bought a large bit of rural land years before I planned to use it, and I kept it wild and unused deliberately for conservation reasons (government kickbacks for not farming or hunting on it and providing a habitat for native species). If some hooligan came and developed it, it would have destroyed it, and I'd become a tiny bit homicidal over it. Even when I did stop using it as a legal conservation area, it was only used as a training space for SAR tracking and detection K9s (and still is), so I keep it as natural as possible. It is treated for mosquitos, though. I also just appreciate local species and like to provide a haven amidst all the farming and hunting land that surrounds it, and it includes a large region of wetlands that are extremely valuable to migrating waterfowl. I'd make a small fortune off of it if I sold it now for use as farmland or livestock pastures, but I'll never part with it while I'm alive enough to say so.
@@Nylak-Otter I think in your case it being Conversation land would fall under being used. even with it being more of a training space now, you'd be able to argue that you're actively using the land. This is more the case of if you bought the land, and just, never did anything with it. never filed it as being used, just left it as is, and someone moved in there and built it up, etc.

Here in Ontario where this case happened we have what is called squatters rights. I’m not sure when they came into effect but the Donnelly’s were actually screwed over by the deal of only half the land. In current day if you can prove you have been occupying the land for 10 years uninterrupted then you can become the legal owner of that land and the original owner CAN NOT kick you off said land.
Also love that you added the small part St. Thomas played in this story. Gotta love that my home town is known for for its part in this and killing Jumbo the Elephant #stthomasproud 😂
You know, for a family of gangsters that supposedly committed all of these crimes.... They sure had good friends and neighbors who cared a lot about them. Meanwhile, the villains of this story sure seem to have nothing but petty reasons and superstitions to go off of. Gonna chalk this one up to "local family doesn't take bullshit and people are upset about that".
It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Donnelly's had been criminals, but they hadn't murdered anyone. Just did vandalism for intimidation. The lynch mob was just a bunch murderers.
Especially since he’s English and would have been a kid during the tail end of the Troubles, though he has admitted he lived a fairly privileged sheltered life, so it could be he has a lot of childhood ignorance.
As someone from a family of 6 boys and 1 girl who moved to an established town, I have sympathy for the subjects of this video, My family were constantly being blamed for the going on in the town and a log of the time it was not us, we were not perfect but the worst thing we did was play chappy/knockdoor run. What do you call knock door run where you come from?
yaay I live in London, Ontario which is really close to where this happened. Grew up hearing all kinds of stories and local legends about the Donnellys, I'm so pumped that my fave true crime channel covered this :}
The day you uploaded this I happened to go to a bookstore and pick up a book about this. I’m gonna read the book before watching this video, though this is a crazy coincidence.
I grew up in that general area. I actually had a friend in Lucan. I hadn’t heard about this family and the mass murder of them until tonight. Thanks for another great video and knocking loose a few memories!
I appreciate the explanation at the start about the difficulties facing Irish Catholics under the hand of protestants but to reduce it down to just religion completely ignores the fact that it was a result of hundreds of years of strict and brutal colonisation of Ireland by the UK resulting in the mass genocide of Irish people that only really began to ease up less than 100 years ago, not to mention that a portion of the country is still wrongfully occupied by the UK today!
Was looking for more comments/conversation about the nature of the video and its contents and everyone is just talking about the music lol Kinda frustrating. Like I'm glad they paid attention to what people wanted but do we really need to say it so many times? Anyway, this is such a wild story. The family shouldn't have to feel like they should leave their home but sheesh if everyone hated me in town, I'd leave if I could. It's a good thing we have the tech we do today because it feels like people got away with some crazy stuff back in the day. Side note: there was that one murder of a guy in a town where he was hated (a more modern case) and I think everyone got off. Tbf though, he was a huge arse and pulled a shotty on someone I think? Looked it up, Ken Rex McElroy.
Yeah, I've been scrolling for a good couple of minutes now and all people keep nabbing about is the background music. I'd have loved to see more insight, shared opinions, or experience a little catharsis knowing everybody found this story equally frustrating and tragic and whatnot, but alas.
3:17 As someone who lives in the north of England (specifically Teesside), I can categorically say that we do not set fire to dead cats in wheelie bins here. I know I haven’t.
Yeah, even though this isn’t presented like a race thing, considering the Donnelly’s were tolerant for equality towards Protestants and Catholics and that was part of the reason they were hated, it’s on par with masacre having racial parallels against people who preferred the segregation.
I grew up hearing the stories of why what happened to the Donnellys happened... a lot of the horror stories of what they did to "deserve" this outcome unfortunately was fairly normal for the region during those times, and even into the 1960s ... even in the 2000s I recall a family with just as messed up lore as the Donnellys. I still feel empathetic to the family especially the women as a lot of local stories of what happened to them is insanely disturbing and they were said to be more pleasant than the father or brothers...

This is a story I’m still fascinated by. It’s also something I never thought I’d see on here. I grew up in London, ON, and everyone knows this story.
I watcehed the orignal. Didnt really notice the music. I didnt finish it so i clicked on this one to finish and didnt notice the music was gone until i read the comments lol
Thanks Danny!
Compliments on the smooth (lol) delivery of your necessary ad-work! Masterful, sir.
Canadian Hatfields vs. McCoys? lol
Thanks for editing the audio. Simon's melodious tones need no enhancement. 😏
As a man from the North, I can confim that there is currently a flaming cat in my bin.
Wtf
Noone does this
Thanks for taking that music out, now I can listen to this episode!
Thank you so so much for the reupload without the music! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you!
Thank you ! 🎉
Thanks for taking out the looping torture music, this episode is a banger 😊
I always liked the original music he had during reading a few years ago.
Now I don't even notice the background music! Perfect. 👌
I miss the original theme music & i liked the music that introduced each new chapter
Yay the music was fixed! I made it through it once already but I’m here to drop a like and comment for the algorithm! ❤
Spill the tea! Why re-upload?
got rid of the background music
Probably copyright?
There was REALLY annoying background music. It was like four notes on a repeating loop
@@CopperPheonix Oh, haha! Must've been to tired to notice. Thanks!
@@DANIxDANGER not it was just REALLY annoying violin/hurdy-gurdy that played the same four notes over and over and over.
Thank you for removing the background music, the previous version was unwatchable.
This is such a fascinating case. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿. Love and love.
Good show 👍 one could not cope with the noise last week.
Thanks for the Canadian content mate, thumbs up.
Thank you so much! I can actually watch it now! ❤
Watching again for the algorithm, get that boost fact boy
Peppa Pig might haunt the dreams of parents of today, but for me, it was Barney.
In the night Garden for me 😂
Thank you so much! I can listen! I'm so sorry for having to stand off. I just couldn't handle the music
This is literally like the sub plot of peaky blinders, absolutely wild
Is it? Never got what the hype was about so never watched it 😂
Love that Simon is surprised at the religious hatred of the past as if there isn't currently a giant war in Gaza for the same reason....
And Sudan.
Especially since he’s English and would have been a kid during the tail end of the Troubles, though he has admitted he lived a fairly privileged sheltered life, so it could be he has a lot of childhood ignorance.
@ashb7846 yeah, didn't think about that. Plus...literally the Church of England's entire history with the Catholic Church in England itself. 😅
Oooh! Excited for this one! I grew up with this story! Let's gooooooo
Ahh so they changed the background music.
As someone from Tipperary, Ireland, I can safely say Simon is absolutely murdering the pronunciation of "Tipperary"
I heard it’s a long way to get there. 😉
How are you meant to pronounce it then?
"He's dead Jim" Classic Star Trek lol!
Ding -dong, ditch
You all listen to your viewers; that's amazing, and we thank you! ✨️😊💙
yaay I live in London, Ontario which is really close to where this happened. Grew up hearing all kinds of stories and local legends about the Donnellys, I'm so pumped that my fave true crime channel covered this :}
The day you uploaded this I happened to go to a bookstore and pick up a book about this. I’m gonna read the book before watching this video, though this is a crazy coincidence.
I grew up in that general area. I actually had a friend in Lucan. I hadn’t heard about this family and the mass murder of them until tonight. Thanks for another great video and knocking loose a few memories!
OMG that music got so annoying! I mean I kind of understood when it started to illustrate the old west of it all, but then it just never stopped LOL
the towel graphic made me spit out my coffee. thank you for that, editor.
I liked the music but I’m thankful you listened to the others 🙏
simon: no one sleeps 12 and a half hours
me: "sweats nervously"
I like this channel even more because they listened to the fans and took out the loop music.
❤
I really enjoyed the new graphics like the yes and need Cooke as well as the initial opening images.
I miss the old jingle the editor used. The piano, was it?
No, it was a 4 note hurdy gurdy.
Was looking for more comments/conversation about the nature of the video and its contents and everyone is just talking about the music lol
Kinda frustrating.
#Simon is this a reupload? Tis weird, like I already listened to this one?
I honestly loved the music. It added to the humor for me, but I do understand if people got annoyed! Thanks Simon and the team!
3:17 As someone who lives in the north of England (specifically Teesside), I can categorically say that we do not set fire to dead cats in wheelie bins here. I know I haven’t.
Never heard of this happening especially on such a large scale that it's a common knowledge apparently
1:34:19 this is like the Tulsa Race Massacre.
They were like “let’s just erase this problem we created”
Yeah, even though this isn’t presented like a race thing, considering the Donnelly’s were tolerant for equality towards Protestants and Catholics and that was part of the reason they were hated, it’s on par with masacre having racial parallels against people who preferred the segregation.
Came to give reload views and engagement! I really like this one! I listened this on iTunes.
Thank you!!!
Thanks for removing the music. The loop was driving me nuts.
