    Nancy Love's WAFS (Womens Auxiliary Ferrrying Squadron) were already flying military aircraft when Jackie Cochran made her proposal. Women in the British ATA were also flying military aircraft. Idea was novel at the time, but had already been done.

    Germany never mobilized its women. BTW, flying WW2 military aircraft wasn't easy. The women who did this were exceptional. Just like the men who flew these aircraft.
    My favorite story about WAAFs is how the Military brass shamed male pilots into flying the B-29 by getting women to fly this huge aircraft.

      These women added 1000 pilots to the war effort - as it would have taken that many to do what they did. And your "chicks" comment sounds to me disrespectful of their contribution. I don't believe the video had anything to do with how tough these ladies were - just that they were doing a thankless task that was not afforded to women again for more than 30 years.

    That's a weird thing to say isn't it? "Exceptional" is an exclusive word. It means women are the exception to the set of men and women, the group which is very good at piloting. I don't think think this video supported that claim.

      RevucumberTechUSA
      I think i see it differently. I agree with your definition of the word exceptional, as one of the two most commonly used definitions of the word - but the other definition would be that women then were not the normal military pilot. This group was therefore an exception - these women were the delivery pilots - and with 1000 doing this job, that means there were 1000 male pilots freed up for flying in the war. The ladies were exceptional - but it was not necessarily a positive exception. Who knows - there may have been some who would have been exceptional war pilots, but the possibility was never there. Still, they did an important job and did it well.

    • @bingbung
      @bingbung 4 года назад

      @@julieenslow5915 If that were the meaning, exceptional should have preceded the word women as a qualifier

      We don't really know if they were exceptional women, though I personally take that on faith, based just on what they were willing to do. But we do know they were exceptional pilots, as women pilots in WWII were very much the exception - and also the job they had was an exception to the normal assignment of a pilot in war time.
