I don’t know anything about GM’s or any US made stuff, but is there a durable-enough manual transmission that the owner could swap in without being a fabrication nightmare? I’m assuming a clutch pedal and brackets could be added with only a hole saw taken to the firewall, like on a 240sx.
@@cbh148 I know some of the trucks with that body style had manual transmissions (Four speeds typically) and I knew someone who had a 1990 Suburban with a four speed, so I bet it's a fairly easy swap. The nice thing about GM stuff is a LOT of stuff swaps over without any fabrication at all.
My dad had a 72. Helped him rebuild the engine as much as a young kid could. My sister crashed it into a tree while learning to drive. K5 shrugged it off. Unfortunately it suffered a slow death when the transmission started going. My dad sold it due to financial problems like he did a couple other classics he had hanging around. Brings back memories. Some good, some bad. Such is life.

I bought a 1985 K5 Blazer in 2001 with 85,000 original miles for $1,900. It had a 305 V8 engine and it was great especially in the snow. I had it for about a year before I got rid of it. Drove an '84 6.2L diesel K5 in the 90's. Working on hat thing taught me tons about trucks. Sold it after the transmission crapped out for the third time. Damn that was a beast to try to push down the road.
My dad has a forest green 1972 K5 blazer that my grandfather bought new in 1972. I love the thing. It gets real looks and there is so much space. Feels solid and loose and lax at the same time.
I just love these 60-70-80-90s trucks/truck-based vehicles. And I'm glad there is plenty driving around. I can't help but smile when I see one driving down the road, whether they are Ram, Chevy, or Ford.
We had a K5 when I was a kid, one of the older ones. It was on large enough tires that my dad had to pick my mom up and place her into the truck. Got about 5 mpg in blue with a white top. Absolutely loved that thing.
My best friend had a black blazer in Chicago on the NW side and the wheel literally came off the front passenger after having the tires serviced on the way back from O'Hare one night. I hopped out and got that out of Addison as it nosed down. You were a good driver Jim, thank you for everything, it wasn't your fault that tire came off.
I'm a squrebody nerd and LOVE this truck! FYI this generation of GM truck is commonly referred to as the "squarebody" by truck nerds. This is one CLEAN K5. I could do w/out the sunroofs or the exhaust tips, and the 4WD def needs to work, but other than that his thing is SWEEEEEET. My dad had a 78 K5 when I was a little kid, and that thing was a tank. It was also a rotted out PO at that time (thanks New England!) but I remember him offroading it or crashing through huge snow piles. I always wanted one. Came close when I was in high school, I bought a beater 73K10 and fixed it up. Wish I had kept it :( They were a dime a dozen when I was in high school (90's kid), it wasn't till later the value started shooting up. I think they're worth the money though, as these trucks will literally last longer than their owners, providing one can keep the body rot at bay. As far as the transmissions, he doesn't specify if these are pro rebuilds, or junkyard transmissions. If they're from the JY, they can be picked up for a few hundred bucks. If they're pro rebuilds, he needs a new tranny guy. These don't have steering racks; the steering box turns a pitman arm which acts on a drag link which turns the drivers wheel, and the passenger wheel is connected to the driver's wheel via a long tie rod. If the ball joints in that long tie rod get worn, the wheels start to move in slightly different directions and the damn thing can be nearly uncontrollable. It happened to my K10. Crossover steering is a very popular mod on these. The rear axle is 1.5" narrower per side than the front. My truck came with wider wheels on the rear to even it out. Some mud truck guys used to say the different tracks were helpful in the mud, as the rear tires followed in slightly narrower ruts and got more "bite". I dunno, to me it looks goofy. Swap in a 3/4 or 1ton rear axle from the same generation van, the rear axle is wider than the pickups and will match the front track. To see a NASTY K5, check out BJ Balwin's. Though, there's not much K5 left other than the body and a section of the original chassis.
I'm 19 and have had 3 vehicles so far not a single one of them were newer than 95 iv had a 95 Chevy Cheyenne a 95 Dodge caravan and now I have a 91 S10
Had an 88 K5 until it was stolen, still have it today otherwise. That thing was a beast. I remember after one big snowstorm pulling a bunch of cars (and a Jeep) out of a 5' snowbank. Loved that truck.
If I were meeting a guy for the first time and all I knew about him was that he owned a Marauder and a 1990 Blazer, I wouldn’t in a million years expect him to be a green haired, millennial rocker!
No way... how could I miss that chunk of the video talking about his band? And other its and bits. And the plug. Damn, I sure wish I had your sense of attention.
I had LOTS of fun with my 1990 Chevy "silverado" single cab truck with the 350 engine! Not the blazer but basically the same. and oh ya, I put 3 12inch Kicker sub-woofers behind the seat so I had to have it all the way forward to drive...very (not) safe Sounded great along with the 6.5 inch kicker component door speakers I had also. Good times...good high school times... :)
I have owned 4 K5 Blazers and they were all badass rides to own and drive. I saw one locally with a supercharged LS3 in it and sounded amazing and the owner claimed 18mpg city... that would be an amazing setup on some 35's. Love the blazer's!
This generation of Chevy trucks is, without question, my favorite. Coincidentally it's also the precise cross-section of the availability of luxury features like power windows/locks/seats, air con with the last bastion of traditional features like butterfly windows, manual transmission availability even in the utility bodies (allegedly foreign markets and fleet sales could defy this) fully metal construction, etc. A 1970s platform updated to the 1990s. The pickups had already taken the newer, modernized form by the late 80s, but the Blazer, Suburban, and Heavy-Duty pickups stayed with this body style until '91, delicious anachronisms of 70s zeitgeist in the era of the Taurus and the design imperative that everything had to start looking like it was excreted from some terrible orifice. Seeing a car like this on the road is like getting back small-portrait notes in your change. "Ah" you think, "real money." Before the change that set everything on its ear. Before "they" ruined it.
You are right about foreign markets, the Silverado actually retained a manual transmission in the Mexican market until 2013 (however it was only on the V6 base model)
@@cpufreak101 Yep, the dealer only told me that a special order would have been vaguely possible. @blackandgold51 But why? It would be a over 20 year old body at that point, even then the GMT-400 isn't bad, they are just like Square Bodies but not going to cost you a arm and a leg for almost 50 year old garbage
8:30 That's pretty much what surprised me the most about my S10 Blazer. It's a big car by European standards, but it has a tighter turn radius than most cars on the roads, even ones with shorter wheelbases.
I get the same feeling driving my 1985 GMC K20. My dad bought it brand new in 85 and the thing has just been a good honest workhorse ever since. Turns heads every once in a while with it having an iconic sounding 6.2 Detroit Deisel.
@@ninjamaster3453 the 99 SHO only came with automatic. I've been thinking about aytempting a manual swap, but it would probably be more money and effort than it's worth.
Mine was originally bought and used to tow a fifth wheel. For the first 14, come to find out, the dealership hadn't actually connected up the heavy duty cooler that was installed so they were all warranty repairs within the first 50k miles. Then the 15th was my doing after I bought it at 65k, did the transmission service with the wrong filter and blew it up on a long highway pull.
I have an assignment in graphic design school where we have to make cover art for a book. I had no idea what to make it for so my teacher recommended On the Road since he knew I'm a car guy. Reading and loving it now and just got the Kerouac reference at the start of the video!
An '89 model hit my '85 Escort, from a standing stop, while I was passing in front of it at a two-way stop, on the left rear quarter-panel, spun the car about 200 degrees, the right rear wheel rim hit the concrete curb, popped it over that after chipping the concrete and bending the rim, leaving the car almost completely off the street. I was amazed then, and now, that the car didn't flip. Did absolutely nothing to the K5's bumper. I still remember that guy's name, and I've hated Blazers ever since.
So many memories in the GMC version of this that belonged to my best friend's mom. Burying it in water up to the goddamn hood and still getting out alive, slamming on the brakes and sending a friend in the back flying into the windshield...

This review really hit home. I've got an '88 with 200,000 miles. It's on its second engine and transmission because the original owners weren't kind to it. I used to daily it, but that wore out it's welcome pretty quick. This truck is a lot more fun offroad than on. Case in point; mine is bone stock, and I've taken it through the woods as the crow flies, crawling over fallen trees (so long as they weren't too big) like they were nothing as I followed lifted XJ Cherokees. Came close to busting the transfer case open a few times, but it was incredible fun and the only reason I keep it around. I spend more time working on the damn thing than driving it. When I do drive it, I get hounded by what I like to call "Squarebody Bros." I get questions and comments from them like this; "Are ya gonna restore it?" "You shouldn't be driving it in the winter, you're ruining a classic." "How much you want for it?" "Don't turn it into a mud rig, you're ruining a classic." It's the Squarebody Bros that tell me I'm ruining my K5 that get to me and is another reason why I don't daily it anymore. I might just turn it into a dedicated mud rig though, much to their dismay.
I had a 79 K5. Champagne gold farm truck with a lift kit much like this one. I could make moves on the sheer force of ugly with that beast. No running boards. I'm 6'0" and the door handle was at eye level. I used the door pull and steering wheel to vault myself inside. It was wonderful. There's nothing - NOTHING! - more liberating than owning a truck that you love but at the same time don't give a crap about. I didn't polish the fenders. The interior was musty and the floorboards had a few holes. I needed a daily for living in the Vail Valley and this monster was PERFECT.
Most blazer owners acknowledge 3 body styles. the 69-72 which has the 67-72 truck body and fully convertible top, the ever coveted 73-76 full convertible square body, and the 77-91.
Just really spot on. You guys must have dad's that saw reality go away with technology. Keep these videos coming......you may be young, but you clearly have paid attention.
My first truck was a 78 K5!! Second was a 2 door Tahoe. Also had a TBSS. I love Blazers!! You can literally back up into a normal car with a K5, destroy/total the other car, and only have a small dent on your bumper... I mean, that's what i heard. Best car for a young man.
No vehicle should ever have to go through that many transmissions. The only way a vehicle goes through that many transmissions is bad shift changing or terrible quality gears and parts.
its a known bad transmission yet he kept putting in junkyard replacements which all had the same problem and to his surprise they all broke, imagine that smh, he probably spent over $6,500 on cheap replacements if he would have just had it professionally rebuild with revised parts it would have only cost him $2,000 and he would have had a bulletproof transmission that he could count on.
I had a 91 that I sold about a year ago. I loved that thing. I mean yeah the transmission was failing, it leaked oil like the Exxon Valdez and there was more rust than clean steel but it was so much fun to play in the dirt.
13 transmissions? Holy crap. And I thought the 3 TH350s I've gone through (all $100 CL transmissions) was rough. This guy's a trooper. I do wonder what caused at least a portion of the failures.

I don’t know anything about GM’s or any US made stuff, but is there a durable-enough manual transmission that the owner could swap in without being a fabrication nightmare? I’m assuming a clutch pedal and brackets could be added with only a hole saw taken to the firewall, like on a 240sx.
@@cbh148 Yes quite easily. A t56 is a direct swap for his tranny.
Ill agree with that, i have a 1990 c 1500 w/ 348k miles on it, 2nd trans in it.

Oh yes. Sadly the new Blazer is a disgrace to the name plate. I thought the S10 Blazer was already too "soccer mom" but I was wrong.
the s10 blazer chassis had the Typhoon v6 turbo awd is pretty dope, not in the same way the k5 is but dope nonetheless. You right about the new one though.
S10 was an embarrassment. But it did serve as an old man truck.
@@ninjamaster3453 Personally I like small pickups and wish they would make a return, but I don't think that Blazer or the new one deserve the nameplate. At least that one had a bit of off road capability.

I bought a 1985 K5 Blazer in 2001 with 85,000 original miles for $1,900. It had a 305 V8 engine and it was great especially in the snow. I had it for about a year before I got rid of it. I never had a issue with it. I would love to see them make a Blazer like this again not those tiny Trailblazers they came out with. I wanna see a big S.U.V. again.
A real treat is to drive the M1009 military K5 variant. It's a bare bones metal floor, roll up windows, noisy smelly 6.2 diesel iron box .

My name is Gerald
Makes me proud to work on my old truck. Never buying anything newer than 1995.
13 transmissions? Do I smell TV cable geometry/adjustment issues?
You're smelling the burnt fluid of a 700R4 behind a 350hp motor. Then again it is swapped so TV cable issues are likely.

@@cpufreak101 Yep, I have a '13 and the manual talks about a stick. I asked the dealer and they said that was the last year.

"You shouldn't be driving it in the winter, you're ruining a classic." "How much you want for it?" "Don't turn it into a mud rig, you're ruining a classic." It's the Squarebody Bros that tell me I'm ruining my K5 that get to me and is another reason why I don't daily it anymore. I might just turn it into a dedicated mud rig though, much to their dismay.

My best guess is that he just keeps putting in the factory original automatic which wasn't meant for the beefier V8
its a known bad transmission yet he kept putting in junkyard replacements which all had the same problem and to his surprise they all broke, imagine that smh, he probably spent over $6,500 on cheap replacements if he would have just had it professionally rebuild with revised parts it would have only cost him $2,000 and he would have had a bulletproof transmission that he could count on.
