    Guest Bio:
    Mark Horowitz is a training psychiatrist and researcher who has a Ph.D. from King’s College London on the neurobiology of depression and the action of antidepressants. He also, for many years, took the drugs he prescribed. When he tried to come off them, he had a quick and sharp education into the world of withdrawal and the lack of knowledge in the medical field about this topic. Since then, he has tried to bring more awareness to the topic of safe de-prescribing of psychotropic drugs through his academic work, including articles published on how to safely taper antidepressants and antipsychotics, and work with the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK on developing their guidance for patients stopping antidepressants. He is currently the clinical research fellow on the RADAR trial in London, looking at the effect of gradually tapering people with schizophrenia off their antipsychotics.

    Took me 3 years to get off of the meds I was on for 10 years. I've been mainly symptom free for a year now. I have so much PTSD from what I went through and wouldn't wish it on anyone. All the doctors I saw told me something else was wrong with me and it wasn't withdrawal of these drugs. Shame on these people.

    I’m been on an antidepressant for 2 years to treat anxiety, insomnia, and panic disorder. It worked and I got back to sleep but it slowly made be very irritable, paranoid, and angry over the littlest things. Took me half a year of tapering to get to half the starting dose while still functioning normally. Recently, I took it down to about 25% and the withdrawal was HORRIBLE. Severe nausea, insomnia, panic attacks, restlessness, and extreme moments of terror and sense of doom. Right now, I went back to the half dose and that subsided. Still got a ways to go though. For those in withdrawal, don’t give up! You’re not alone. We feel your pain.

      Life is so much better even still not completely tapered from 24 years of taking effexor and benzos. Nearly every conceivable side effect suffered can be attributed to the damn drugs. 30 seconds at a time and with the kindness of complete strangers when needed. You need to believe that you can do this because it is not only possible but probable.

      I think sometimes people attribute every symptom they have to drug withdrawal. But that's not necessarily the case. You may have issues in the future after you stop medication but it doesn't always mean it's from the drug or from it's withdrawal. You just have to learn what your new normal is after you stop medicine because some of us have been on them for decades and we forget what it's like to not be on them.

    • @TheDavveponken
      @TheDavveponken 8 месяцев назад

      @@snowps1 Please refrain from these sorts of statements. They are gaslightiing and very damaging. There's such a vast array of people with different backgrounds bringing up the same symptoms. Of course there will be one or two people who are hypochondriacs but overall this isn't the case here. These changes aren't "a new normal" - they are part of an induced illness of sorts.

I say it because they have worked miracles on my wife's mental health and she is a success story. Me not so much. I don't think SSRIs and the like should not be banned, but they certainly should be prescribed less and dealing with their sexual side effects and withdrawal need to be better studied. Hopefully one day I can get off mine because it doesn't do anything for what it was prescribed for.

      Sometimes people report persistent symptoms - that they can live with - even after returning to life fully functioning after the worst of withdrawals resolve. There are some folks who say PSSD doesn't go - although we saw someone on Reddit the other day saying at 17 years it's resolving. There are also people who have TD and other movement disorders that report it doesn't resolve. However, unless we follow people for a very long time - beyond 15 years for a minority of long-sufferers - not sure we can say something is permanent (meaning, with someone forever).

      @@user-sp3qp2hv3m You're welcome. There are people who are 90% well and living great lives, happy, at peace, functional, back to work. They're not "healed" by way of being 100%, but they're good. Is this permanent? Maybe. Is it way better and living a life? They say yes. Will it all go w/ more time? Its possible!

      I've been off off antidepressants 3.3 years. I took them 20 years and I stopped them in 5 days and took sam e 100mg 2 x a day but I also stopped that at 2.7 years. Which is 6 months ago. I'm in a bad wave right now with stomach issues. I' started taking magnesium glycinate today. 50 mg 2 x a day and 50 at night. Anybody else on here that took them 20 years and ct off of them or a very short taper?

      It's so hard to advocate for ourselves when the medical system is not on our side....it has taken me 4 years to taper down to a small dose of effexor but I am healing and slowly recovering. Medication spellbinding is real. We are left to our own devices as we are considered to be the problem and not the neurotoxins they prescribe.

      @@dianemorrell9638 That's EXACTLY my point. I just celebr8d my 56th b-day recently (my DOB: 7/20/1967). I was on 30+ different psych meds (starting w/Ritalin @ age 4 in 1971 & ending w/Zyprexa & Depakote--via a 2.5 yr taper--on 12/31/2016) ovr a 44-yr period b4 becoming psych med-free since 1/1/2017. Since then; I was doin' relatively well until I my bird-daughter Chimes (whom I shared w/my x-GF Andrea) passed away 3 months ago. I'm also dealing w/other unresolved issues of being bullied by other people yet somehow, they (mental health personnel) insist that only medication can "treat" me (was diagnosed w/ADHD & Bipolar Disorder --then called Hyperkinesis & Manic-Depression, "respectively"--back in the 1970s). What's even more galling; mental health personnel luv comparing mental health conditions 2 diabetes but insulin's OPTIONAL as treatment 4 diabetes but meds r MANDATORY/REQUIRED 4 mental health conditions. Even if counseling/psychotherapy's available, most wanna pair w/meds. That "1st line" approach' RE: psych meds is so counterproductive as it pertains 2 mental health. Yup, Ms. Morrell; u r definitely SPOT-ON!!!!!

    I'm 2 weeks into quitting Cymbalta after being on 60 mg for 4.5 years. Yes I did taper over the course of 3 months. A lot of my side effects have went away, but I go through some serious lows a couple days a week, and the way he described them are spot on. These lows I've never had before, and I have no reason to be depressed anymore in the first place. I just go into a mode where I loathe everything. I raged in the first week, but I'm trying to get better at controlling that. I just feel like these drugs are junk. I hope I get better soon, it is quite discouraging.

      Have you had problems with sensitivity to light from computer/smartphone screens, sensitivity to certain sounds and headaches? It's been 6 months since I reduced my dose from 60mg to 30mg and my life is hell, I can't stand any flickering light or computer screen...

      No, I fortunately dodged the side effect of headaches for the most part. I've only had two that I can count so far being about three weeks in. From what I can tell everyone has their own response. Sorry I can't be of more help, maybe you can find a good supplement to help you. Good luck. @@RoiPourpre

    I'm 1 wk into cold turkey withdrawal of Effexor XR 225. Hadn't planned this , but insurance changes & lack of communication from GPs office left me out of pills. I've had some headaches, racing heart (have underlying heart issues) and confusion but nothing terrible. I wonder if its ok to just not take it anymore. I'm not feeling sad, crying, etc like times i tried to stop previously. Any input appreciated. TIA

      Of course. The shorter you were on medication less likely you are to go through withdrawals and less severe they are if you go through them
