Your name is Kyle and you test awesome high gain amps and cabs with a basic sm57 and deliver the unprocessed audio while looking based and cool at the same time. Not a snack, Kyle is the whole damn meal.
You need to be playing doom riffs with that amp
I own 4 of these heads. I also have 4 of the Iommi cabs from this series. I bought the first one from Sam Ash music in 2007. One of them, I installed a quad set of 6L6s. These amps are very fuzzy sounding no matter how you dial it in. I like these amps a lot but, I love a Marshall much better. I was friends with Tony Iommi’s guitar tech, Mike Clement before he just recently passed away. He built me a treble booster pedal a few years ago, and makes the GH amps sound much better. Great Vid Kyle! Thanks for other vids as well.
This amp has more character than I thought it did. It's an interesting character too and I like it. I like some doom-y (and shoegaze-y) tones despite not playing that style of music and this amp sounds right for that.
Got mine a little over a year ago. This thing is LOADED with great tones. Legend has it, Eddie Van Halen used to play this amp a lot during the Monsters of Rock tour and the 5150 was almost made by Laney since Eddie was so impressed. Try using the lo channel, bright boost on, and use an OD. Hi output channel is great on its own, just remember Tony's signature treble boost is built into the circuit and EQ accordingly. I haven't even bothered with any of my other amplifiers since. If you take the time to really familiarize yourself with this beast, it's extremely versatile
I liked the sound. Unique and with balls.
You really need to get a TI100, probably the baddest Laney amp ever
I love the fuzziness of my LH50R! They are angry, not sterile.
It would be dope if you could get your hands on the more recent TI100, Killswitch Engage used it on their atonement album, and you can tell it has a ton of saturation. It's also pretty rare, like this one, since it was a limited run.
You need to hear the Laney GH 100 through the Laney 412 cab with HH speakers. It's '90's cab that matched that head.
I own a VH100R myself, while it's brighter/tighter than this one it definitely shares similar characteristics, especially the overall EQ curve. For me an MXR 10-band in the loop is pretty much required if I'm playing anything fast and/or staccato-ish.
I did play through the Iommi model a few times over the years and always found it too woolly. I'm sure a graphic EQ might help somewhat but meh, I'd leave this one to the doom players.
Sounds like it would be awesome for old school death metal.
I really liked the gnarlyness of some of those tones! Perhaps it translates differently recorded. What do you think listening back to it?
Before you sell it you should compare it to a regular GH series head.
I used to have the Laney VH100R and I can hear the same fuzziness in the low end and the harsh high end. However it took a TS808 quite well and cleaned up better than the Iommi here. Plus when cranked it opened up and got tighter which I don't see happening here. I kind of miss that amp and would not mind getting one again as the clean was stellar and the rock tones great.
I love my vh100r!!
Hi Kyle ! Greetings from the Czech Republic (central europe :-) .Thanks for what you do! Because you're fucking good at it ! 👍
Definitely hearing the Blackwater Park Opeth
Really like this one - maybe not for modern tones but the tone around 12:15 is like spot on Tool-tone right there! You should try to get your hands on a VH100R - one of the best amps I know!
It's pretty much the same amp, but just with reverb.
@@in.der.welt.sein. And besides having a completely different circuit with 4 channels, three fx-loops and different values in 90% of the components. The GH line from the 90's is like the 2 heavy channels of the VH100 but the other ones from the line show no similarities.
@@danielringl8501 ah, my mistake. I was thinking of the gh100r.
@@in.der.welt.sein. I own both a VH100 and a GH100TI, they are definitely different animals. VH100 is tigther but a bit more restrained sounding, the GH100 is more lively but fuzzy and with a huge untight low end. Right now I would pick the GH100TI if I could only pick one.
The TI100 is the Iommy-amp to go. Also, you should try the Peavey 6534+
Loved it with SD-1, at about 13:20.
It's not really your style of amp, but I've heard an emo/prog/metal guitarist play some nice chordal stuff through one years ago with the matching 4x12 and that worked nicely. It sounded unique at the very least. Not sure what speakers came in them.
I have the same Schecter Elite tele best guitar I have ever owned
love your videos bro ! the amp rips..
but if you could stop to play the eternal same riff please.. (10,30min) thx very much
Sounds like a transistor amp!
No way..
Youngn just send the amp to me. Ya don't know what ya r dealn with! U r playn with fire!!!
Do you think you'll be able to get a better fitting tone for thrash and hardcore stuff with a gh50/100l? Wondering what do you think about those amps
The newer version after this is better and more versatile
Man what is the tune being played at the 12 minute mark? I can't quite place it.
My kind of amp.
Didn't you have a Discord channel? If I'm right, can someone tell me how i get in?
Hey Kyle, have you ever played any of those Laney AOR series of amps?
Ultimate doom metal tone right there. Literal wall of sound. Probably not kyles style at all but would be awesome to see one here
Meaty!!
Actually sizzle and not any meat that i can hear
Wait...did you say "Boss M77"? Isn't that the MXR M77 Modified? Sorry, I couldnt help it lol
i think the v 30 is to blame here
That thing sounds like shit lmao.
Way back when I'm o used hiwatt didn't he? And a pedal.
Could be wrong I have memory loss and alzhimers thanks to Sabbath music. And tinnitus.
And v30`s suck too.
Sounds like crap
The correct speakers dont really break up. Iommi's distortion came from the amp. 4 75/80 watt spkrs let's his amp speak. NOT GREENBACKS!!
I don't know Kyle. That last tone you were getting was pretty crushing.
One important detail: This amp has a HI and LO input. The HI input goes through an extra tube gain stage. The manual warns against using the HI input with hi-gain humbuckers, so this could explain some of the extreme mushyness in the video. Also, Tony Iommi runs his heads into GH12H30 Anniversary speakers, and I find that Laney's are sometimes happier in that style of speakers (probably due to their Marshall DNA). I am picking up a GH100S later this week and I might eventually post a video on my channel.
EDIT: The high input is RIDICULOUSLY gainy, and the LO input is undergained… challenging amp to dial in!
EDIT 2: After owning this amp for a while - I kinda love it with a boost in front (OD808X)
I just got a 100S too. I'm having trouble understanding how people are saying the hi input is too gainy. Where do you guys set the gain at? Kinda worried something's wrong with mine.
@@redironbird3857 you should record a clip.
These amps are sick. I have a gh100l and gh50l, both sound awesome through my Sunn and acoustic 412 cabs. They sounds really good in a band mix.
I have the full option VH100R and it’s wild. Still love it 18 years later. Mine is from 95/96 the first gen with better PCBs. Never tried with 5881s but the EL34s are so rich in harmonics
Sounds awesome to me, I like fuzzy distorted tones.
damn sounds great to me! guitar shop near my place has this amp... im gonna go there and test it. love the tone with an overdrive on!!!
its based on the old AOR series that sounded much better to my ears as this signature fizzy chainsaw thing here, get on AOR 50 for cheap, boost it and enjoy but the "best" signature amp is the engl blackmore IMO, just try if you haven't, cheers🎸
If you haven't yet, the ehx mig50 would be interesting coming from you
I second this! I’ve heard it’s a good platform amp, but the cleans and OD are both pretty dang good. Super loud too.
Thanks-Love the lack of research, personally. I'd call the experience "unvarnished and authentic." Plenty of other channels for nerding. This one's for chugging. 👍
Im loving some of these tones .. would be a very useful amp to have .. conclusion .. Kyle is a Laney hater
Laney GH series amps sound best through Greenbacks. No doubt about it.
In my experience they don’t like vintage 30 type speakers
If anybody has this amp and can crank it/have an attenuator, put all the knobs at 7, and flip all the switches to on and go straight into the amp with no pedals. This is how Iommi set his and I believe its the sweet spot, probably my favourite high gain sound Ive ever had. Stays tight, is extremely aggressive, the highs get creamier and it cuts through a mix like nothing else
I liked it, the clank was cool to me, would be the kind of tone I’d like to hear a song written around.
This would do a sick Acid King tone
That thing sounds great
Laneys like Fanes
Hey Kyle. Watching this vid earlier made me mess with my Laney GH100TI rig. Try this, and tell me what you think. Lower the gain on the amp to about 3-4. Put a Boss DS-1 with the tone knob all the way down, level set at about halfway, and distortion set to about 3, and put a Boss SD-1 into the DS-1, and set the overdrive as a clean boost for solos. This way, the Laney sounds as close to a Marshall you can get. It sounds awesome now in my opinion. Basically it’s just stacking distortions. Try it, and tell me what you think man. ✌️🎸
I have a VH100. It was my first amp so it has a special place, but to be honest it’s not been doing what I hoped it would for me (high gain metal in E standard). HOWEVER, it really comes alive with lower tunings (D or C). Also, for applications that don’t require full gain, it sounds good. Some people say it’s like a Marshall, but I never recommend it to people looking specifically for that sound because it would just disappoint.
The last Laney I heard and really liked was the model that Ace Frehley used in the late 80’s. This reminds me of. Cross between an Orange and a Marshall.
Dont quote me, but I believe these amps are fairly similar to the Ampeg VL circuit wise. They're not identical but they're similar, you can hear it in that kinda fuzzy nature it has with the gain cranked and those unique sounding pinch harmonics. Supposedly that character comes from blocking distortion, which that fuzzy weird sound is why I love those amps even though it's technically not supposed to happen. The highs on the Ampeg are also similarly hard to get right in my opinion too, it either sounds muffled or harsh. I love both amps and I've been considering getting the Laney because I play a more sludgy doomy punk style so it works perfectly for me and the tone is super nostalgic for me as well
I tried this amp out at a Sam Ash. I wasn't crazy about it for the reasons you mentioned and have always been a Sabbath fan. At home, I play through an old Supergroup and a Klipp using various pedals. Don't really need anything else.
Sludge and doom all
Day long but not a good choice for thrash . Personally I prefer the vh100R. I also own a GH50L both are from the 90s era not the reissues. The VH100 in my opinion can cover a lot genre of music styles.
Another vote for the VH100R, its the amp that had always done everything ive asked it to!
Congrats on being evaluated the "3rd most boring youtube channel" by the absolute paragon of belligerent amateurs over on FB ;) Ill keep coming back regardless!
1)I can’t find the link for your apparel.
2) Is there a Hat?
3) I can’t ever find things I’m looking for, ask my wife. Might just be me being a dumbass.
Great video btw
The Laney uses Celestion G12H 75's. They have better highs and noticeably more bass.A given for the sound is a Rangemaster but the silicon model pedal. P90s add a lot too.
Wasn't a fan of this one unfortunately. Not a slight on your playing Kyle, just really not my thing. I think a GH100L video needs to happen to redress the balance 😅 now that is a KILLER amp for thrash!
It reminded me of the Randall EOD 88. I'm confident the EOD was based on this amp. It was supposed to be black sabbath tone.
Amp sounds like it’s not biased properly. Almost sounded like crossover distortion on the lower gain settings. I’m thinking the bias is set too cold.
Reverb has older pic of the 412 "HH cab .
See at : Laney GH50L and 4X12 matching Cabinet
How about trying out the Tech21 PSA 2.0, see what kinds of tones you can get outta that thing?
Those inverted chords sound so hairy! Laney has that Gnarly British tone at it’s best imo.
Sounds good. Tony Iommi sounded different on every album
This happens with a lot of vintage amps. I prefer to use a TC Spark as a clean boost. I feel like it has more options to shape tone and tighten up amps like this as opposed to tube screamers.
All Laney amps are designed around HH speakers.
But, most importantly, does it Doooooooom! 🤘😁🤘
Got one and its wonderful, had it for maney yrats now!
@12:46 good description of that phenomenon
I don't hear sabbath tones.
SD-1 always does the trick 😊💛
It's so chewy I love it!!!
Where’s the beef? Right here son!
These might be rare in the US Market, but in Europe you can find some (GH100TI and GH100S are exactly the same amp, except from the corner protections, in plastic on the S, and metal on the TI) from time to time, and they're cheap, like 400/500€ as no one gives any f*cks about mono channel amps in metal.
Bought mine 6 years ago and will never change.
Though you have to be really careful with the pairing with Speakers and Mics to record it, especially for High frequencies, as you said many times.
I've always found it utterly sh*tty with V30's, even worst with Chinese V30's. So yeah, you need to check it with different Speakers.
What are you favourite speakers with this amp? Just got one myself. It's not bad through my '95 V30s, but I imagine it can be better. I know Tony used G12H 30th anniversary.
@@lordgraga I use a version 1 Harley Benton 2*12" (that originally came with Chinese V30's) - the versions 1 are more to my taste because they are stuffed with acoustic treatment inside. Now loaded with one Jensen Tornado Stealth 65 and one WGS Reaper HP.
The Jensen is Mid Focused, and the WGS is a kind of reiteration of the G12H30, but in a 50w version and a bit sharper a bit more balanced in the frequency range - less high mids/highs that generally are problematic in a mix.
@@ThomasLinteresting setup, will keep an eye out for them!
@@lordgraga check by yourself which tone you like, if you have a 4*12" you could combine 2 WGS Reaper HP and two WGS Invader 50 also ! Well, check on RUclips some videos, be careful if the mic used and the position obviously !
@@ThomasL gotcha! I have a 4x12 Laney HH cab that might get a treatment like that some day. Definitely gonna try either Reaper or G12H 30!
Maybe you can try the tone control on the guitar next time!!
Absolutely not!
@@belligerentamateur A really cure just the volume nob on the guitar, sometimes when you adjust them a little they can do a lot. Volume swells and tone nob swells all through rock music!! Love you brother and take it for a test drive sometimes!!
I owned one of these at one time for about 10years. It's was a powerful amp but I was never satisfied with the tone I got out of it. I think I could be completely wrong about this but I think they made Paul Gilbert model or maybe he just endorsed them. I want to say I recall an ad in Guitar Player mag. Like I said could be completely wrong about it to
I have some riff samples of my Victory Kraken that you may actually like. It's like a British Engl type sound. Just let me know.
