I don't know why you'd say nobody in america eats this. It's a New England staple. I grew up on it, probably have had a thousand of them. I would never put butter on it, though. One of my brothers would eat grape jelly and fluff instead of peanut butter. Sometimes I'd put potato chips inside. Trust me, this is a very popular sandwich in part of the US.
Yeah it's not really a thing outside of the New England area. I've lived in the Midwest and west coast and currently living in the Carolinas and I have never heard of this until now. I made some and tried it and it's okay. Gross with the butter but that's a British thing. Making it without the butter and it was a good dessert
