No one in the world like KO! You really must watch Kevin’s Fifth and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy ReImagined (both with Matt Sallee doing some drums). Time for you and Kevin to do a beat-boxing duet 😊.
Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on cello and once on saxophone. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place. For #Pentatonix songs where Kevin sings, try "Imagine" (the official video), "Kiss From A Rose" (preferably the live Vevo recording, available on RUclips - Kevin celloboxes and sings), and "Run To You" (a PTX original written by Avi and Kevin - no lead singer, no solos, no percussion, just glorious five part harmony throughout - best in the official video).
You'll love "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth." This is a live feed from a concert they gave in Owensboro, Kentucky, Kevin's home town: ruclips.net/video/DbCasvcNx78/видео.html and this is the very special performance of "Kevin's Fifth" (without "The Kevin Show") from Kevin's birthday in 2022: ruclips.net/video/7m0g7xThIWs/видео.htmlsi=99F7iG5qkdgPCm43
In 2011, The Trio (a singing group that Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch had formed in high school) wanted to compete on NBC's a cappella competition show named _"The Sing-Off,"_ but the show required that competing groups have at least five members. Their contact on the show was Ben Bram, who now works as PTX's arranger and producer, and Ben suggested that they add a rhythm section - a bass and a beatboxer. He recommended Avi for the bass, and Avi accepted their invitation, but Ben didn't know any beatboxers. So in desperation they typed "beatboxer" into a RUclips search box and the first hit they got was a black guy playing a classical piece on the cello and beatboxing at the same time. And all of them said, "Wow! He's the one! How can we get in touch with him?" They were in luck. At the time RUclips had something called RUclips messages, which would allow private messages between members (now discontinued), so they sent Kevin a private message: "Hey! We really love your stuff, and we wonder if you'd be interested in flying across the country to join four strangers to audition for an a cappella competition show on television?" And Kevin messaged them back: "Normally I'd be there in a heart beat; I love a cappella and have been in a cappella groups before. But right now I'm studying for my final exams for my pre-med major from Yale." Oh. That sounded pretty definite; better keep looking. So they kept looking, and they found someone, but he was no Kevin Olusola. Oh well; you work with what you have. And two weeks later Kevin messaged them again: "Good news! I just graduated. If the gig's still open I can fly out." He arrived the day before their audition. Mitch had to skip his graduation ceremony to attend the audition. But even with just a day of rehearsal they still passed the audition; they were in. So, in 2011 Kevin graduated from Yale with a pre-med major. That's one degree. Kevin had already been accepted to Yale Medical school - his original plan was to become a heart surgeon - but he gave that up to join Pentatonix. But it goes beyond that. Pentatonix appeared throughout Season 3 of _The Sing-Off_ (2011), and they won. First prize was $200,000 and a recording contract with Epic, a minor subsidiary of Sony, the show's sponsor. So they all moved to California, got apartments in the same building, all ready to begin their new career as recording artists, and a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying they didn't know how to market a cappella music. What would you normally expect to happen in that situation? I would have expected Mitch to start applying to colleges, Scott and Kirstin to return to their respective colleges, Avi to pursue a career in opera, and Kevin to head back to Yale and become a heart surgeon. The $200,000, split 5 ways, would have given them each $40,000, which is a nice start on a nest egg; it could have worked. But it wasn't what they wanted. They WANTED that singing career they'd been working for. So they pooled their winnings. They dropped the lease on two of the apartments; Kevin and Avi shared one apartment and Mitch and Scott shared another; that saved them a bit of money. They lived frugally, bought nothing they didn't absolutely need. And every day they arranged music, and rehearsed songs, and whenever they decided a song was ready they'd use an iPhone or iPad to record themselves singing it and post it to RUclips. Their fans from _The Sing-Off_ found their channel, and subscribed, and liked, and shared, and sometimes became patrons. And other people started finding them. And they started going viral. And Sony noticed and contacted them. Would they like a contract with a different minor subsidiary named Madison Gate? Turns out they would. Now think about that a little bit. Kevin didn't have to stay. He could have left at any time and become a heart surgeon; by most people's standards that would have been the sensible thing to do. But if Kevin had done that it would have been the end of Pentatonix, and Pentatonix isn't just a singing group, it's a family-of-choice. Kevin would never desert his family. Kevin Olusola is one of the people I respect most in the whole world, and it isn't because he's so talented, though he certainly is. It's because he's kind, and loving, and a man of honor. And he knows how to laugh.
It's my understanding he was just finishing finals for his PRE-medical major at Yale University, not medical school. But he is clearly so intelligent and so talented in many different ways. I'm so glad he chose music for his career though!
Recommend his live performances of Kevin’s Fifth and Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy Reimagined. However, you should see Pentatonix’s Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy first. It’s a Grammy winner.
Sorry, KO’s “only” got a Bachelor of Arts from Yale but he was pre-med, whatever the name of his actual degree. Pre-med is brutal. Played both cello and saxophone in high school and performed in Europe and the US Public Broadcasting Serivce’s youth music series at Carnegie Hall on sax. Makes you have some hope for the human race.
Yes!!!!😃I’m literally soo happy you got to this one specifically because this is one of my absolute favorite covers KO has ever done…again,my opinion only.i love his crazy cello boxing skills plus his added musical flair of pure genius magnitude on the chores & verses.such a complete UPGRADE and so much more intricate musically than the original, which is good to begin with.Kevin has a way of hearing the different parts and then making them all flow seamlessly together …smoothly, flawlessly, and perfectly in harmony, in cinque, and in rhythm.thank you for your reaction,as always I highly enjoy your fun enthusiasm!!🎶❤️✌🏻
Though this is one of his more popular reactions you can also see what other instruments he plays in his cover of Harry styles, sign of the times, definitely worth the reaction
KO = Kevin Olusola = Knock Out. It's a pun Kevin has been using since before #Pentatonix was so much as a gleam in Scott's eye. Olusola is pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emhasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable.
Brand new to your channel thoroughly enjoying your reaction. Yes Kevin is just incredible like when god made him he decided to give him all the talents. Not only does he have a perfect pitch Not only not only was he getting his medical degree, He's also fluent in at least mandarin that I know of maybe several other languages he can play the cello He can play the saxophone He's comparable on the piano Guess he can sing he can be box. All of that and he is super nice in person I've met him once He is exactly how you see him He got up shook my hand gave me a big hug engaged with me directly. Pentatonix
Not necessarily for reaction, more for your own fun, you should check out his TT. He has some short clips of him playing cello with a friend who tap dances. Also beat boxing to a few classical pieces.
Kevin was subconscious about his singing voice until Scott encouraged him and guided him into refining his voice. Kevin has perfect pitch so he just needed encouragement
Kevin plays piano and saxophone. He has been on world famous stages with his saxophone. He is of Nigerian descent. His dad was born there. You pronounce his last name O-LOOSH-uh-la.
Yeah, the electric cello uses many of the same tech features as an electric guitar. (Another great electric cello performance by another artist, Tina Guo, is the main theme from Wonder Woman 2017.)
Now you need to watch Kevin doing Kevin’s 5th live from the Hollywood Bowl as well as Kevin’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Reimagined!
Yes please!
I second this!!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Spectacular performance! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 and right up your alley! Perfection! Omg! What! Thank you Klown! 🔥
Required kevining!

His smile at the end was awesome!
Don't forget, he's played saxophone at Carnegie Hall, too ....

Great reaction. Thank you. Kevin is amazing. He also plays saxophone at concert level.
It's my understanding he was just finishing finals for his PRE-medical major at Yale University, not medical school. But he is clearly so intelligent and so talented in many different ways. I'm so glad he chose music for his career though!
Yup, pe-med, and the exams he needed to take were presumably the MCATs, the Medical College Admission Tests.

Does the PTX fandom not enjoy his rendition of Sign of the Times? I NEVER see anyone recommend it to reactors for some reason. Its a shame honestly.
Also Renegade.
I don't think you really liked it! 😮🙄😎
joking of course
