I reckon your classical training has put you in such good stead in the picking dexterity in terms of the ambidextrous technique of all the right hand fingers
When i watch this for the x'th time i start to realise that this in a way is similar to what Tommy Emmanuel did when arranging Beatles song for guitar despite the differences in context and tradition.
Awesome video and Derek is an amazing player for bringing a style of music not really for guitar to it, very unique. But does anyone know why there is a guy translating his words to sign language on the side? If someone can't hear him speak why would they want to see a guitarist?
Lazer7 deaf people can feel music by touch, they can touch a speaker and feel the music. And also even if they can’t hear I am sure some are interested in the concept of music.
RIP Toumani.. Your music lives through composers like Derek. Thank you Derek for this.
Looking at Derek's hands as he speaks shows you he's a haptic communicator - something he does very well as he plays his guitar 😊
He is a genius to have the knowledge of following those African fingers. Not given to many. Nice job
I now have a new favorite guitarist - Derek Gripper. Music with such an impelling potency, such an indescribable elegance and exuberance.
This is incredible. Professional interpretation of beautiful African music.
How beautiful Derek ! I´m a big Kora fan !

+nilton61 and complexity and rhythm and musical interest and technique etc etc
Does anyone know what the song he plays from 2:00 (roughly) is called? Does it exist as a song in its own right?
djaraby it is a standard song in the mande tradition
jarabi
there are several ways to spell it as it is Malian.
Look up Toumani Diabaté and or Ballaké Sissoko
Does anyone know what's the tunning for the first song?
zoulouetzara f# 3 string
No, I don't know
Great stuff, what is the tuning you're using, Derek?
D A D F# B E
Is that for all the pieces?
TheCompleteGuitarist i am sure for "Djarabi" "Kaira" and "Mama FC", i ve worked on thiese pieces, maybe it's the same for the other pieces...

Why the capo?
because it 'sings' better with the higher resonance
😍😍😍👌👌👌❤
ultra like
What is the name of the African man the composed this?
Toumani diabate
niiice
Increible...!!!:-)
I thing he is generating the song of 2 cora players.
Found him from Instagram music
However talent he is. Sound of guitar is not sound of Cora. Please we don't have beetowen or Mozart but our griot are just the best for us
Very nice. However lets not use the word Griot. The original term is Jali. Means Blood. Why borrow the colonial word rather than the original one.
guitar is out of tune, unfortunately. Still a great presentation.
