  • -Composer: Alexander von Zemlinsky (14 October 1871 - 15 March 1942)
-Performers: Wolfgang Meyer (Clarinet), Mischa Meyer (Cello), Markus Hadulla (Piano)
Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano in d minor, op. 3, written in 1895-96
    00:07 - I. Allegro ma non troppo
    13:14 - II. Andante
    21:31 - III. Allegro
The Trio for piano, clarinet & cello in D minor, Op. 3, from 1896, of the Austrian composer Alexander von Zemlinsky is a work of conservative Romanticism modeled on Brahms' own trio scored for the same instruments of 1892. Indeed, the closing Allegro in D minor of Zemlinsky's Trio takes its main theme directly from the main theme of the parallel movement in Brahms' Trio. Nor is Brahms the only influence apparent in Zemlinsky's work: the opening Allegro ma no troppo in D minor sounds distinctly Slavic with echoes of Tchaikovsky and Dvorák in its themes and the central Andante's big sentimental tune in D major recalls the gestures of the passionate second theme of the closing movement of Mahler's First Symphony. Despite these imitations, Zemlinsky's Trio is an appealing and well-made work by a minor master of the fin de siècle.

The young Zemlinsky, who was close to Mahler and Schoenberg (who married his sister) wrote down a very inspired score, walking in the paces of Brahms' op. 114 without imitating him, and also avoiding the tense expressionism of his friends. It is neither a postromantic work, in spite of its lyrism, sometimes rather calm, sometimes exhibiting outbursts of either melancholy or passion, fully integrated in the overarching mood. This mood is very peculiar, personal and is not easy to describe. You will immediately perceive it when listening to this trio. .❤❤❤🧡💛🧡❤❤❤

The wonderfully talented Wolfgang Meyer playing the clarinet part (brother of Sabine - altogether an indecently talented family). Sumptuous playing by all. Thanks for posting.

감사합니다. 길고 지루하다는 의견도 있는 것 같지만 저는 기발하고 좋네요. 클라리넷으로 시작하다가 첼로가 치고 올라오는 부분이 참 좋네요.

Thanks for uploading, this is one of my favorite pieces! Are you going to do more Zemlinsky videos? IMO there is a lack of score videos of his music.

In my case, thanks to IMSLP for putting it out. The piano part may be more difficult than that of the Brahms Trio for the same combination, but I think it would be worth it There's lots of great writing & the combination of instruments is beautifully done.

    m. 76 of the second movement the clarinet should have a written A-natural instead of a Bb. It's wrong in the score but performed correctly on this recording.

How did you fill the entire screen with the score and eliminate any black background?

Brahms may be his musical reference but it's very different in sound spirit more oriental experimental fusion. it's kind of ridiculous to refer to Zemlinsky as a minor master of the fin de siecle. his mastery is on a par with Schoenberg and Schreker perhaps even better. he taught Schoenberg how to compose as he was his brother in law. but then Arnold dumped Alex's sister.
