- Animal Well delights with its non-traditional approach to Metroidvanias, combining unique items with a reactive and surreal world that's full of surprises.
It's usually pretty easy to predict how a 2D Metroidvania is going to play out. At some point, you'll probably unlock a double or even triple jump to reach previously inaccessible areas, obtain an air dash that helps you traverse large gaps and pass through specific blockades, and acquire a weapon upgrade that functions as both a killing tool and a way to progress past certain obstacles. Animal Well contains most of these things, but never in ways that are expected. Created by solo developer Billy Basso and published by Bigmode, Animal Well is a surrealist puzzle platformer that's delightfully surprising. Even if its pixelated art style and genre trappings make it seem familiar on the surface, it is a game that often eschews conventional wisdom and stands out because of it.
It's impressive that this is the lone blemish on an otherwise excellent addition to the pantheon of great Metroidvanias. This is a game that's chock full of pleasant surprises, from the way its items forgo tradition in interesting ways to the visual design and sense of atmosphere generated by its bizarre, neon-soaked world. Animal Well might look antiquated and familiar at first glance, but this well is cavernous and unpredictable.

There is a way to fast travel from anywhere, though you can only travel to pre-determined places. It involves your Animal Flute, but I won't spoil it for you beyond that.
Played it for about an hour last night and really enjoyed it. My suggestion is it's something you shouldn't look up too much, reviews and such. The game is getting 9s on average so go out and enjoy the experience for yourself!

This game is also made using its own engine, giving it an extremely tight file size and low latency.

i guess it's impossible to show this game without spoiling some puzzle solutions, but glad you mentioned the backtracking, my only issue with it as well.
i don’t think i got bothered less with backtracking in any other metroidvania. world is very well connected, easy to learn, and nothing is ever too far away once you unlock fasttravel (which happens very early in the game). it’s only in the post-ending-b hunt that i kinda felt it was tedious. at this stage, there is no clear direction of what you are even looking for.
I just realized it now hearing this review (having already beaten the first finale of the game), but it is NOT a magic wand, it is just a bubble wand! 😂

There is a fast travel system having to do with the Animal Flute, they missed it, but mentioned it’s absence as a downside. Sad

Definitely a game for those who like shovel knight and undertale. Not really my bag baby! But glad y’all r having fun.

Halo 5 looks so good

Platformers, top down, and turn based games. Ick, sadly there isn't much innovation left in these areas. Completely linear, and as stated you already know how it plays out.

This visual style is so hard to read. Need to really focus to see anything coherent on screen. And I tried on big monitor, and small phone screens - no difference, just poor choice of visual style.

@@Mohgenstein well just by watching walk through I can tell.. is like the Zelda game it was rated 10/10 but to me it was just ok.. it just didn't feel like a Zelda with no dungeons etc..I just feel a metroid Vania without combat is not a real metroidvania... have you played it?
