No way! That is so awesome! There are a few different variations to this cake. But this one happens to be my favorite. So happy to bring back those Junior High memories! Especially back when we used to call it junior high, LOL! Have a great one June! 🍸❤️
@@yesterkitchen yep, it was this very recipe. I remember because it was my first encounter with pistachio pudding. It was also my last. I liked it fine, it just kinda fell off my radar somehow. Guess I'll have reacquaint myself and my family with it!
Every Christmas party in the 1980s had this cake. There's also a chocolate Better Than cake. The one I made had cherry cake, vanilla pudding, cherry pie filling, Cool Whip, pecans ( and some chopped pecans in the cherry cake batter) with some leftover cherry pie filling on top. I thought it was a bit cloying but everyone else loved it.
Hi Jade! LOL! Every party in the 80s indeed! Your version sounds fantastic! There is a chocolate caramel version and I was trying to decide which one to make. But after experimenting, the sweet meter was just way too high on that one so I went with this. Which is actually one of the very first versions. But when I make it again, I'm trying your version! I love cherries! Thanks for sharing! Always great to hear from you! 🍸❤️
Oh my! That's an interesting cake. Lots of exciting flavours and textures going on! Would you make a Sacher torte in the future? Great story with it too!
Hi Sally! This definitely is a great cake! I will not be doing Sacher Torte. I focus on retro American dishes. And while I love the cake and have yet to visit Austria, sadly it isn't on my list. Always lovely to hear from you! 🍸❤️
Love the way this came out! I never thought to combine pistachio and pineapple, but I think it would work!! Cant wait to whip this up at home! I'm loving the YesterQuickies!
Thanks Kevin! You just made my day! And, This is a great combination! I know you're going to love it! It's very different and very good! Thanks for stopping by love! 🍸❤️
Hi Alayna! This is definitely a must-try! The flavor is go so well together! And it just looks fantastic! If you give it a go, please let me know. And tag me on Instagram with a picture so I can see it! So happy you stopped by! 🍸❤️
Wow, Jill, that cake looks amazing! When you poked the holes with the wooden spoon, I thought about "poke cake." Thanks for the tip about not poking all the way through to the bottom. This definitely reminded me of Watergate salad, too. Wow, that cake looked amazing. I especially liked the colors of the layers on top. The cherries really made it all pop. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Parnell! I absolutely love the way it turned out, the colors just popped! And yes, this is a riff on the poke 8. Which was very popular in the 70s. 🍸❤️
Ok Jill!! This cake is like Whoa! All those layers of goodness! Once again an excellent show and an excellent recipe! Always looking forwards to Fridays!! Cheers! xoxo!
It's such a great name, isn't it? Know whether it's true or not, I'll leave that up to everyone, LOL! There are so many wonderful versions but this just happens to be my favorite. 🍸❤️
Yay! There used to be an old woman in her 80s that would always make this cake and bring it to our church potlucks! (Maybe 10 or 15 years ago) People would always ask her what is this? And she would always respond with a straight face, it’s better than sex cake! And she would sit and look at you waiting for your reaction and then just bust out laughing! It was so delicious then and your recipe looks delicious now! Thank you so much for another awesome history lesson! 💕💕👍😀
I so wish I could have been there to see her! Thank you so much for sharing that because I love to hear stories that trigger memories from the food I'm making. It's an absolute honor and privilege! Have a great one Alicia! Looking forward to hearing from you soon! 🍸❤️

I recall a version with chocolate pudding filling, crushed pecan for the bottom and cool whip for the top!..Is this the first iteration or the most popular?
It's hard to tell which came first but there were so many variations! The chocolate is amazing too. It's really the technique and then the flavors are totally customizable to your faves! 🍸❤️
I remember in the 80's always hearing about this cake, but I never had it or knew what was in it. It looks amazing so I guess the question must be asked. Is it better? Hell I would happy with a close second lol

I always loved the lemon pudding cake back then. I’ve found an old recipe called sponge I think and it separates into cake on top and pudding on bottom. Just eggs separated, little bit of flour, fresh lemon juice and rind. Yummy.
YesterKitchen I have made it several times when I get the urge to want lemon something. I don’t care for cooking with Meyer lemons since I don’t feel they have enough of that tangy zing. I can send you the recipe if you wish.
YesterKitchen. - I googled and “onceuponachef” has the exact recipe for warm lemon pudding cake. I have made in ramekins and one large baking dish. The site shows every step. Soooo yummy.
The Better Than Sex Cake we made in the 1980’s was a white or German Chocolate Cake. Poke the holes and use Mrs. Richardson Hot Fudge ice cream topping to go into the holes. Next use Mrs. Richardson caramel ice cream topping. Next frost with Cool Whip. Place a crushed Heath bar and toasted pecans as the top layers. Refrigerate for 4 hours. I guess this recipe varies from the region the person lives in. Your recipe looks great as well.
