- You can't talk about electronic music without mentioning Detroit. The city's DJs and producers birthed the genre we now call techno. Detroit, however, has always had a creative streak, due in large part to the boom and subsequent bust of the auto industry. Quite simply, Detroit is a city of extremes, and its music reflects that. Detroit's importance in the global electronic music scenes is often referred to in the past tense. With the recent emergence of Kyle Hall and other young Detroit producers, however, it's clear that a spark remains. When we visited, we found a number of artists with their eyes (and ears) firmly set towards the future. After our time there, it's clear that Detroit will endure and innovate for years to come.

RIP Mike Huckaby ... Such a wonderful section with him and the Youthsville project here ❤
Moved up here in January and completely heartbroken by his passing. Such a genuine pillar of kindness for the community
seen him once on rosenthaler. platz in berlin gawd damn
I hadn't even heard of him till he passed away. What a lovely character and it's such a shame he's no longer with us.
Fundamentals are very important in anything that you do. Thats what I call mentoring. He will be missed by so many Rest in Peace.
No matter how many times I watched this video, what Mike said in this video is so true and it’s so inspiring to see him helping kids growing up.
Still can’t believe he is gone. Rest In Peace Mike. I hope you found peace “Fantasy” place in heaven just like your track “Fantasy”. 🙏
I still cant believe he's gone either. Had the pleasure of having some great chats with him over the years. Such a humble guy, I pushed him to repress one of his tracks he hadn't got full confidence in. Apparently ment a lot to him an gave me a shout out on the wax. Such a gent

Check some Chicago docs so
Trchno
Much fuckin respect Mike Huckaby, if only I had a music teacher like you when I was in school
jeezz. i had a music teacher at the age of 13, representing my scratch skillz on tape, he was like what the fuck is this . this is no music. It still pisses me off when i think of it. It was maybe no Qbert quality, but at least support and motivate a kids pasion. This is what most people mis
I appreciate seeing a film that address the issues in Detroit but shows the positive. I was so happy to see RJ Watkins and Youthville. I would have liked to see and hear from Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Juan Atkins since they are credited as being the founders. Or even Carl Craig considering the influence he's had. I do enjoy this whole series. I love seeing how music influences people all over the world.
I think Detroit has more potential than any other city in America right now. All of the crumbling buildings are the best places for fostering creativity from resourceful people. Not to mention the legendary impact the city made on music and culture that we still feel today-Detroit must rise again!
This was such a good piece. Salute to Mike Huckaby for giving back to the youth and helping to shape New Creative Minds..
TRUELY!!
These kids deserve it, and I really admire a true and real sense of a community going on, so many other places are too competitive, trying to outshine the next guy or climb the social ladder.
Rest in peace, Mike.
Detroit also gives inspiration to all of us in the world who live in the same circumstances like people in detroit. Don't forget that!
Totally agree

Been travelling too The D for 15 years from Scotland and its Electric the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end from the moment I get off the plane and for weeks after I return home. ❤❤❤❤The most wonderful people I have ever had the pleasure to meet and become friends with. I LOVE YOU DETROIT ❤️❤️❤️❤️

yo he livin good!
DETROIT HUSTLES HARDER.
This is great documentary. Keep in mind this is from 7 years ago, and now in 2018 Detroit is turning around with an influx of people and business, as well as underground musicians. Every time I visit I see new buildings being built, and people riding on the new Trams!
Can I ask how the house scene is their would love to take a trip to feel the true Detroit house vibe.
Electronic music industry has become a giant industry but how many of these super star djs help kids learn something in their life like Mike does ?
Mike Huckaby is such a dude! What a down to earth epic guy! Wish he would tutor me!
+AL B I've spoken to him. He's pretty chilled in deed :)
Mike is the guy...!
That kid is going to be a beast!
the public needs more videos like this to educate them about underground culture.
Love Detroit, love the people of Detroit. What a misunderstood area...
Fascinating creation that came from this city. There’s the mechanical aspect, the soul aspect, a futuristic aspect, and an intensely moody aspect. It’s the perfect fusion - it is the most complete musical expression of the human experience from my point of view. Techno. And the many offshoots (that adhere to musical and creative integrity). It is brilliant and nothing has moved me to my core the way this music does.
Much respect to Detroit techno and electro producers. I love Detroit!
Regards from Miami.
I think that Mike Huckaby is brilliant and selfless. Spreading the knowledge to the next generation. Well done Mike
Rip 🙏
Perhaps the least pretentious city of all in the Real Scenes series.
the Warehouse parties is still going to this day. amazing experience. all should go if you like techno and house :)
i'm thinking about starting one here in Miami, FL. I want to start something that's different from traditional clubbing. I love UK garage
Warping Warping that would be dope. The underground scene is big Miami??
I would say there's a decent following man. I'd like to see one. Implement DIY culture and good music. House, detroit techno, uk garage. Thinking about renting a warehouse keep it underground every once and while, nothing frequent
Detroit's the livest underground
Definitely yearn for that experience.
Thank you for everything Detroit, the raw sense of passion your city emanates is what's inspired me to strive to be a better artist even from across the globe.
So much respect for the teacher on choosing to stay in Detroit to mentor the youth
Rest In Peace Mike H. 🙏🏿🙏🏾
RIP Mike. A legend in so many ways...
The home of Techno. The Original
Best RA Documentary ever produced!
Great Documentary. I was born on the East Side of Detroit. Sad that most of the houses were empty lots when I went in 03'. I love this video. I try to tell people that so many focus on the negative things out of Detroit, but, there's so much more to the city that if given the chance they'd see the cool things. Thanks for sharing guys. Best Wishes in your Music Journeys. Take care
What a legend. RIP MIKE HUCKABY X
God bless to the kids pursuing their passion much respect from a techno lover from Tokyo you rock you the next gen
OMG!!!! I have been playing GHOSTEN at almost every gig and to hear it here makes me so emotional.
"ill never leave Detroit" means something. Makes me want to live there as well!
Never been to the US but my cousin lives in NYC. I really wanna go to Detroit because so much music I love has come from there. But like the guy in the video said, maybe you wouldn’t call Detroit a vibrant place. Worth seeing as a tourist if you can meet a local and have time to hang?
Detroit will never die!
Thanks RA! This is class!
True people who truly love music, their community and what they're doing: hard to find nowadays!
Really well filmed. Even the dereliction looks fascinating. They may be talking about the music but I noticed the architecture
Man that 10 year old kid is gonna go places if he's starting that young! Awesome video.
I know there's a list of tracks at the end of the film, but, for a dj, it would be much more desirable to have the title in some captions while it actually plays. You guys selected some great tunes for this awsome document. Thanks.
This was very well produced. I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you.
A story of unique love
I need more of these.
Anytime I watch these Im always shocked I never heard of some of the artists! First time ive come across kyle hall and his music is amazing!
It's amazing how much music and histories there are. I do electronic music, maybe dub techno, but evenings are on RUclips learning the people and places that are the wellspring of my inspiration.
Can you make a "real scenes - Cardiff" and just film me doing the two step for 25 minutes
Rhondda two step butt
Wouldn't it just be you getting drunk and going to the rugby, and possibly having a fight at the pub later?
Calon Lan Bois bach
Im from Dublin, Ireland & we love detroit!
Detroit music scene 90s and early 2000s. As far as rock garage punk... Was Unreal the talent level
The opening statement is such a nice metaphor.
does anyone know the specific law that Rick Wilhite is referring to cant seem to find it online, im writing a dissertation about techno scenes this would be very helpful
These warehouse parties (house before house) happened in London during the early to mid 80s.
The mainstream clubs were only interested in first generation hip hop or Afrika Bambaataa (body poppin) type electro as opposed to the more dance oriented Cybertron style of electro.
Under the leadership of the "wonderful" Margaret Thatcher, a lot of London's traditional industries went bust.
There were a lot of derelict buildings around Shoreditch, Wapping, Kings Cross and London Bridge (underneath the railway arches) and even Covent Garden.
During the weekdays we would source venues, bribe property management, even pretend to be buying property so that we could get inside and look around.
Saturdays was the night playing similar records like Klien & MBO and anything left field, progressive and electronic at about 120 bpm - 125 bpm.
Crowds were 400 plus and there was even a fatality. Someone ventured away from the music into so other unlit part of the building and fell through the floor.
The parties were mixed attracted all types. What always amazed me was how well dressed the people would be to dance in what was basically a death pit, shit hole. 🤔😆
Massive respect to Mike Huckaby!
yo these docs are dope
Motor was dope!
That beat by reuel that's playing at 15:02 for a couple of seconds is dope!
Too bad i don't have the patience for this kind of music anymore, its really beautiful.
Mike Huckaby is a freakin legend!
Great Camera Shots!
This is to white and doesn't talk about the club scene. Detroit had so many clubs pre-90's that was on par with Chicago and New York. But Detroit wasn't a international city. The Back clubs were: The Famous Door, Club Bookies, Music Institute, Parabox, Heaven, Luomos, Taboo, the Wearhouse. These were clubs that played disco, and later house music. Where is this documentary?
Respect .....Detroit !!
*great documentary* wishing to see more like this.
Love this, respect from Cleveland
wow I'm suprised the first background music is atmospheric Drum & bass instead of Techno
How good were all the tracks!! Ufff♥️🔥
Detroit has always been a fucked up place, I was born and raised there so I know....however, there are a group of people in there and from there that made it a Memorable Mecca that people around the world love and adore.
Mike Huckaby teaching kids how to make music! Amazing!
Mike Huckaby word!
the rest of y'all obviously also but damn
Kids are the future all right! Great work
the kid is a legend in the makingg
What a Legacy ♥️♥️💪
Good luck Detroit! Maybe I will get to see it bloom again in my lifetime. Maybe not? Not that I don't wish it would.
The finest music ever!
Excellent documentary.
RIP Mike Huckaby!
someone knows where the kid (derek mahone) are now? they still playing?
he had 11 when the video was posted here. now, he have at a minimum 21 years old.
Imagine going everyday to school to find mike huckaby teaching you how to make music *-*
the governement shoudlv'e embrassed the warehouse raves as a meaning of salvation.... like in berlin , make them into legit clubs and become a resort for ravers all over the world.
sakke1379 they tried with a few clubs but legal venues eliminated that exciting risk factor and feeling like you were apart of something authentic and exclusive. Back in the day there ain’t no party like a Detroit party #FACTS
Then it's not underground..and you feel like Undercovers in there looking for drugs....rave clubs were cool ( for me), but nothing like a dirty warehouse party, the unity of everyone sharing that experience, Outside these parties, we went through a lot with eachother but at parties, no matter what, there was love cuz we shared this- the music, the party (and the X might have had something to do with it too lol).
To 313 from 312: I ♥ U
Viva Detroit
HOME
I have to say youre videos are really passionative and instructive !
DOPE CUTS PLAYING
Loving the kid in the video! He inspires me :)
See you in May!!
i love my city.
But the television tells me that Detroit is dangerous and Detroit is over.
The TV wouldn’t lie to me, would it?
I loved Detroit for warehouse parties. Not a place to go to to see and be seen or be boujee, you go for the live underground , the best sound systems, to hear a bass drop at four AM that rocks the whole city, to dance all night in tennis shoes and a hoodie instead of going out in heels and a dress..
Detroit should look at the eastern part of Berlin now!
They went straight to Motor and skipped all it's predecessors, like St. Andrews Hall, The State Theater, The Factory, etc... I guess they cut it for time??
Hey do one on Chicago too! I spent half my life there also.
those were the days! it seem like that dnt support each other anymore far the as the house music. its all about the money there. I remember the warehouse, heaven after hours, The dancery, famous door, just for example. i got to go to chi-town to hear the good house music. All there so many good house music djs in detroit
really enjoyed this. a good look at detroit without some of the usual egos. though unless i am mistaken that electric deluxe in the back ground of the warehouse is by speedy j not very detroit.
RIP, Mike Huckaby
RIP Mike -
Respect (Y)
RIP Mike Huckaby. So fucking sad, legend
16.00 mins fack that's good.
so mach space to explore somemuch spaces to trow raves partys events it must be cheap , i really wanna go
NEW DANCE SHOW IS THE BEST !!!!
RIP Mike Huckaby
Does anyone know what he means when he says the automobile industry would step in and crush any attempts to diversify the city's industries?
Example.....Detroit street car company being bought out by GM and replaced with GM buses...
Josh Locke My ears perked up at that too. Never thought of it that way. I'm assuming that was happening prior to the riots and the auto decline of the '60s so their idea of diversification back then must be different from what we think of now.
+Josh Locke Suppressed all plans for a mass transportation, such as a subway. This would have allowed the downtown to flourish but instead that gave us a "People Mover", which was a little toy train that ran in a 5-mile radius.
Donald Hardway exactly. never has a major city had such a battle doing public transit well. not just the auto industry but ppl in burbs didn't exactly welcome the idea... still don't to a certain degree. rta failed to pass
And @9.50 - any help much appreciated
Vive Detroit!
