    Oh I still remember when I bought this set for the first time during the beginning of my art journey in 2016. I was so excited lol I remember thinking it was so much money (I was using more affordable products then and couldn't justify the cost of supplies that i was going to potentially hate). A video like this would've been so useful to me then. I love that you mention how consistency matters when it comes to gouache and also pointing out the difference between zinc and titanium, both tips are super helpful !

    Just saw this looking for a brand to buy. Thank you for always staying real and telling the truth. With everyone getting sponsors or getting kickbacks it's hard for artists to decide. What's the truth and whats an infomercial is often lost.

      Thank you so much for this comment. Sometimes I feel pressured by people in the comments to only say nice things because it's either what they are used to with other RUclipsrs, or it personally offends them if I don't like their favorite products( or I'm honest and say it's not perfect.) I don't want to do hype videos just singing the praises of every art material that I try. RUclips has become so commercial and corrupt but I feel that we, the artists, have a responsibility to keep the highest level of quality and standards for our art materials, and not just blow smoke up companies butts because they might throw you a little coin. I'm not going to sit here and say that every product that crosses my desk has fallen from the sky and you NEED to run out and buy it. I'm just not going to do it. I'd rather leave RUclips than make videos like that.

      @@nicolemartinart5819The world in general acts like they have their head in sand. Don't let it bring you down people often want their truth not the truth. Stay the course eventually when all their products don't work right and they realize they were fed marketing and sadly lies. They will then come to someone like you who didn't sell out. You're helping people remember that.Thank you again for all your work and integrity.

    I’ve never had anyone actually show me the difference between zinc and titanium/permanent whites before and I have to say the difference is extraordinary. I didn’t know I needed a mixing white (zinc) until today. Thanks!
    Also, what replacement would you suggest for prussian blue? I don’t use it at all with watercolor but do rely on it when using gouache.

      I'm so glad you found the demo helpful. I had a feeling no one else was showing the differences on camera . Prussian blue is so pretty . It's a favorite pigment of mine and also a historical pigment as van gogh loved and used it alot . Phthalo blue by m Graham is likely the closest you will get to prussian. Both have the same green bias but because prussian is a natural pigment and phthalo is synthetic, the phthalo blue is higher chroma . It's more vibrant . However its is considered the modern replacement for prussion . Lightfastness is excellent on phthalo pigments.

    Gosh, last question, I promise. My MGraham white has a slight sheen to it, not 100% matte, that’s for sure. If I recall correctly my WN white was the same. Have you noticed this at all?

    • @nicolemartinart5819
      @nicolemartinart5819  2 года назад +1

      Yes I have noticed this and no worries how many questions you asked lol . I'm happy to answer them . So titanium white often has just a slight sheen as a result of the natural properties of that pigment but there are a few other reasons that might be contributing to this . First is too much gum Arabic in the formulation of the gouache . See gum Arabic is the binder in watercolor and gouache ( its actually the sap from a tree ) but it's not only used as a binder . It also increases the gloss and transparency of a paint . Watercolor has far more gum Arabic than gouache and this is one reason why the gouache often does not have the adhesion to bind as well with the paper resulting in cracks and flaking off . The binder is just not as strong . That and the chalk fillers . Long story short ... sometimes a gouache paint has too much gum Arabic or honey .... or the tube is suffering from binder separation. That's when you'll see liquid drops oozing or dripping out of the tube when you go to squeeze some out . Again it's likely separated gum Arabic from the pigment . In watercolor I recommend stirring it back into solution but in gouache I often tell people to just discard the extra liquid because it increases gloss . Hope that helps .

    I have the ginormous tube of M Graham white. Actually is my second tube but I wish I would have gotten WN. I bought the 10 set of WN gouache and sadly the white was so dry I couldn't squeeze it out of the tube.

      One small note on the m Graham white .... I dont want to be an alarmist but it's worth noting that the m Graham titanium white gouache contains lead and cadmium compounds in the formula. Besides the obvious health risks , that could also explain why it dried out so quick . If you've ever had any paints in lead tubes youd know they dry out the paint faster .

      The Winsor Newton dried out fast. The M Graham stays juicy in the tube until it's all gone. But thanks for the health warning, I didn't know it contained cadmium/cobalts. I don't have an issue with using the real stuff but I definitely want to know when I'm using them sou can be extra cautious.

      @@ChristinaTodd1970 cadmium/ lead compounds and you are very welcome . Oh it was the winsor newton that dried out ... yea .. . Omg I love how easy the m Graham is to re wet . I can even palette it and have it out on my desk ready to use . Best gouache ever . And they make my favorite watercolors. I'd love to try their acrylic one day too ..
      Now if only we can convince them to make soft pastels 😍 you know id buy every color ! Lol .

    Hi, Thank you for the video, which 3 primary colors that are non-toxic and still light-fast from Windsor newton gouache would you choose if you were going to purchase them individually? would cad-free yellow or cad-free red work as well as primary yellow and red for mixing?

    • @nicolemartinart5819
      @nicolemartinart5819  Год назад +3

      I would not purchase the primary red simply because it's not lightfast unfortunately 😔 . I have since purchased their quin magenta ( not to be confused with the color they have simply titled " magenta ") and I like that very much as a primary. It will mix clean purples and decent warm reds . Cad free reds are warmer ( like genuine cads and are not true primary) The Winsor red is very nice for a bold warm red with good coverage but won't mix a clean purple because of the yellow bias . The primary blue is a wonderful phthalo blue with good coverage and excellent opacity , it will mix both greens and purples . I'd personally avoid the cad free colors because they keep the pigment information a secret and therefore lightfastness is really anyone's guess . Also I've seen some lightfast test results that have shown the yellows fade regardless of their high lightfast rating . And it's very likely they are repackaging an already existing color in their line as this new cadmium free hue and marking up the price substantially ( another reason they won't disclose the pigment info. ) So if I was gonna buy just 3 open stock for a true primary palette that was less toxic I'd go for the primary yellow , primary blue and quinacridone magenta . Plus white ofcourse for tinting . ( Bare in mind cadmium free doesn't mean non toxic. There's really no such thing as non toxic fine art supplies but these choices are free of heavy metals and highly toxic offenders ) I hope that helps. If you have anymore questions I can help you with , feel free 🙂

      @@ladanmohammadi2247 I'd do a split primary color system with acrylics . Winsor Newton has a great starter set of their professional acrylics I did a video on the channel .
