I was about 9 and went shopping with my old man, and as we're walking towards tesco in pulls a red 550 with the number plate red 1. The owner hops out and says sit in it if you like, and he disappeared into tesco leaving it unlocked. Fast forward 22 years and I was working as a removal man. We have a job to take a fridge back to Costco, we pull up to the drive which is about half a mile long, pull up to the house which is huge, nissan gtr parked outside and a 599 rear end poking out the garage, with the number plate red 1.
He didn't remember surprisingly but did confirm it was his 550. There's my pointless Ferrari story.

Think it is the camera, reds can be difficult to get right on most cameras.

For 95k miles and 21 years it could be far worse.
@@waynosfotos yes the actual colour can be hard to some sensors, but these people are talking about the state of the paintwork. You can clearly see the swirls that are scratched in to the paint from poor detailing.

Totally - after the 8 minute long speach I was just happy he was so happy - but guessing by his age and whatnot I ASSUMED it was going to be something from an F355 to an F430 in ferrari year range and most definitely a Ferrari - I mean who’s dream car isn’t one? Mine was - until I test drive the F355 and couldn’t fit the footwell - anyway so happy for him

As a postman the last 10-11 weeks have been extremely challenging as the amount of parcels we’ve been delivering has tripled 😟....so getting home and watching my favourite RUclipsrs has been a fantastic way to wind down. It's crazy how we car lovers just "understand" each other. "Every time I see this car, I smile" was everything I needed to hear to feel happy for you, Jay. It's very difficult to explain to any non-car person, but the things these machines make us feel... it just makes almost any crazy thing we do, worth it!

On my first trip to Europe in 2000, I was driving from Monaco to Milan when a 550 blew past me in a tunnel. That's when I felt I was truly in Italy! Congratulations to you!

Stocking filler specials always watched maybe a few days after boxing day when i had access to the only vhs player in the house and my dad was back at work and not controlling the tv. Hes got one i had, the one where they drag race a slightly strange collection of 6 cars at the end and clarkson has a hard on for the 355. I can recall lines from it to this day about ferrari and lambo not wanting to play ball in the race.

I have loved the the 550 since it came out in the 90's, it's just one of those cars that doesn't seemed to have aged
and has just remained so elegant and graceful in my eyes, plus it's a manual.

I thought it was going to be that too. F355 was my dream car and I remember when they dropped to about 40k. A lot more now and the horror stories on running costs (see CarGuys) put me off unfortunately 😒 Congrats to James for making his dream happen 👍

My friend’s dad got a new 355 in ‘97. I was excited just to be allowed to wash it! Only got a ride once, but it was incredible; the way the nose lifted under acceleration, the click-clack of the gearbox in that metal gate, and the noise... the noise! It felt like a very special place to be.
The unleashed on cars vhs where he has a hard on for the 355, it features near the start and right at the end of the vid and was beautiful. The aston vantage was the star of that video despite its poor drag race showing.

I was talking about a 308 gti like this and have one and it makes me smile like this. And I could of got an a250, golf gti/r, cupra, possibly an s3 as choices. But the right one was missing to prevent me.

Watched the whole 8:59 or so of build up and was worth it. The transition to the highlights was good too. I could feel your joy my friend. EDIT: further in the video now - I bought my 2001 911 with 110k on it. I don't regret it a bit. If anything I'm more confident that it won't blow up. Certainly I had deferred maintenance to handle but you pay to play.

Must be one of those lifetime milestones, owning your first Ferrari... Don't worry about whether or not this is the right time to own such a luxury car in this time, you live your own life and you should make the best of it.
Please do a simple paint correction on the car (clay, compound, polish, wax). All of those swirls will be gone and the red will be more saturated and shiny!

I used to get a Clarkson tape every year for christmas, and he influenced my initial love and passion for cars. When that music kicked in, I was immediately transported back to my childhood home and staying up just to watch Clarkson's Hot 100 and read one of my classic car encyclopedias, which were published around 1993/4, talking about 'the new McLaren F1'. This is exactly how I'd feel. Beautiful car!

JayEmm, a lot of similarities with buying my first Ferrari .... a 550 Maranello. Also bought it before I had ever driven one (even bought it unseen actually) and it was the realisation of a dream ever since I saw my first one in the flesh in 1997. I have since owned a 330GTC, 2x 365BB and my own specced-at-the-factory 458 but the 550 was always there and could always measure up. Due to unforeseen business issues they have all been sold now, the 550 went last. Broke my heart. It was a unique spec (only one ever made in Porsche Nightblue) and utterly perfect, I did 75,000 kms in it. Currently saving up and next spring should see me back in a 550. They are truly epic. Very nice to see you so happy, I know mine made me very happy and I call that model my "home". I will always strive to own one, hopefully find the perfect spec and keep it until my dying days. Sad that it can't be the one I had, but hey, any 550 is enough to make life worthwhile. Enjoy.

Massive congratulations James! What an absolute gem of a car! I adore the 550 myself and look forward to seeing how you get on with it. As an owner of a Ferrari 348 and two F355s, I can only confirm that you were absolutely right in taking the plunge, Covid or no Covid. And it’s great to see you didn’t buy another low mileage garage queen. It’s all about the driving. Even sorting out those little issues is part of the Ferrari ownership experience and gives massive pleasure each time the car is improved a little, step by step. I’ve used StickyRX as well and the quality is great, but import taxes inflate the cost. Check out Carplastix on Instagram. I haven’t used them yet but they seem to be able to do just as good a job for, I would assume, less money. Take care of that beauty and enjoy it. And let me know if you ever take it to Belgium. First, congratulations! To my eyes, this is possibly the last true pure GT car from Ferrari. No unnecessary "why-tech" content, just the original formula from the 250/275 of the 1960s, brought up to date for its era. And I love that it is a "driver", not a garage/trailer/museum queen. To paraphrase Neil Young, long may you both run!
I remember my dad was in a car club and took this out for a weekend with me. We drove around Britain in it. I was only around 7 or 8. And at 19 now this still is one of my favourite cars. I can’t believe how well they have aged. I’d love one. Congrats I can’t wait to see more.

James, I started writing this comment half way into the video. First I want to say that I'm so stoked to see you buy this car, I don't understand how anyone could not be. I'm not that sure that 550 is not as pretty as the 355. For me - it was my childhood hero and a timeless shape as well, along the 355. Eyes on this thing can't be more beautiful, with the smiling front grille. And it's a driver! Over 90k miles? Do the maintenance and get it to 200k! Also... can you have anything better than a rosso red Ferrari with a gated shifter? I don't think so... you can die happy :)

The antithesis of a collection queen with delivery miles only on the clock. I've heard of many supercar mechanics who advise that a well-used and maintained car with plenty of miles is much better than an undriven decoration piece. Well done JayEmm - enjoy every minute!
Congrats on your dream car purchase. About 15 years ago I spent a week in a 575 and F430 driving tour in Tuscany. The impression the GT car made on me was long lasting. A truly superb high speed instrument that allows day long comfort and panache. Enjoy!

This is also a dream car for me. Have been since the 90's. I too have seen the Jeremy Clarkson VHS and recognized the background music right away. I too have watched Harry's 550 video, and mulled over buying one of these over more contemporary cars. Congratulations, what a spec on your 550! Your genuine enthusiasm came through so well in the video. I am now a subscriber.
Usually I watch your videos because - next to Harry - you're the only guy reviewing the true greats. And then I'm getting on with my every day stuff. This time though, I'm jealous, I'm excited, and most of all: happy for you. Out of all the modern Ferraris, this is the one to get in my opinion. The styling is close to perfect (like so many Montezemolo cars). No outrageous design features here and there, just a subtle, "quiet" Gentleman's Express. I always love the story how Montezemolo tried to steal the R129 customers from mercedes with the 550. The engine is bullet proof in Ferrari terms, the build quality is amazing.
Much like you pointed out, I fell in love with the car when it came out during my primary school days. Obviously new Ferraris back then, just like today, were not your average car and a mere dream on the wall. I started looking into "forgotten classics" probably 5 years ago and stumbled over the 456. Gorgeous design, especially the later M GT cars and - dare I say it - affordable for a V12 Ferrari. And then I watched Harry's video...and all those childhood memories came back...and I knew what I need. Long story short, I did my research, I went through pages after pages on Ferrari Chat, talked to owners and mechanics, got my finances in order, did a reality check with my closest friends (they said they would still love me...), prepared the girlfriend...and then got on with it. Pozzi or TDF blue on the outside, cream or cuio on the inside, preferably carpeted luggage shelf (not the leather) and the cherry on top of the cake would be the fitted luggage set.
I've tested 3 so far, every single drive was orgasmic and I really really had to keep myself together to not just turn around and say "sure buddy, I'll pay whatever is on the window sticker". I'm hopeful I can join you for the next summer in 550 ownership and I can't wait. I guess your purchase might just push me over the edge to finally pull the trigger and stop worrying "but what if the engine explodes...?!" Gorgeous lines, mesmerizing sound and Jesus Christ, that torque. What a machine.
One question Jay: Are you planning to get a set of winters for her? Heard of some guys who put her on Sottozeros and apparently it's a great all year round car. Even the heater is working...

It's really nice in this world we're in at the moment to see someone just genuinely having something they love and taking time to enjoy it on top of that. That's worth its admission alone.
